Seanez really isnt doing TOO bad. 3.91 ERA with 42 k's in 41 innings pitched

its Tavarez that i really think should leave

Now you have to wonder what happened with all of this. Did Theo try to make too complicated a deal, spread himself too thin, or just never intend on making a deal?

Still Seanez can not be used in close & late situations

Agreed

He doesn't pitch too often lately so we know he is well rested between games pitched. Maybe we should just save Seanez until September and use him up to see what he can give us.

Now I really feel like we’ve hit rock bottom where we’re defending Seanez’s usefulness. I do agree with you however.

If what the media reports was correct. The Red Sox didn't want to cough up Lester or Hansen for a rental.

Our Wells is better then Kip Wells, and the bullpen is good enough to not warrant a panic move.

He does regret that he wasn’t able to help the team this year by making any kind of significant moves during the trading period.

Givens- Papelbon, Timlin

Heading to DL??- Manny Delcarmen, hand hurts each time throws his curveball

Hansen will find his groove, however he is in this funk of giving up baserunners

Seanez/Tavarez- only good as mop-up guys, cant be trusted in any close game

Bryan Corey- crapshoot, he might good or he might be bad

The more innings that Delcarmen and Hansen throw the better they'll get.

Basically, the bullpen I'm looking at is:

CL: Papelbon

RP: Timlin

RP: Delcarmen

RP: Hansen

RP: Seanez

RP: Lopez

RP: Corey

RP: Tavarez

That's not a bad bullpen. Not many other teams have the amount of the talent the Red Sox do in the bullpen. Not the Yankees, not the Blue Jays. Right now, the Red Sox have to advantedge on pitching and on defense.

According to the attrition numbers in Baseball Prospectus 2006, the chances a rotation of Schilling, Beckett, Wakefield, Wells, and Lester stay healthy is about 63%, if I did that right (probably not!)

Using PECOTA cards, I have it at 66.4%. The non-attrition rates are 86% for Schilling, 83% for Wells, 100% for Lester, 100% for Wake, 93% for Beckett. Those are 5 independent variables, so:

.86 * .83 * 1 * 1 * .93 = .6638

Of course, it doesn't help when Wake's 0% attrition rate is certainly wrong.

I'm just glad that Theo didn't panic and accept the Braves' offer of Andruw Jones for Coco Crisp, Craig Hansen, and Jon Lester. That would have been awful.

I been away all day, is their a chance we get anything?

Nothing is in the pipeline. Theo gave his pres conference and made no mention of anything pending.

I just cant see how Seanez and Tavarez in our bullpen help makes us a threat. Oh yea I forgot about Lopez. Lefties are hitting what like .333 against him?

You're talking about the 5th and 6th options out of our bullpen. Seanez is pretty good at that. I'm looking at his strikeouts (9.15 K/9), ERA (3.92), and his BABIP. (.343) Maybe with a little luck, his ERA could come down further. He's not a bad relief pitcher, or not nearly as bad as the Red Sox demonize him out to be.

Take Jon Lester away and I'm all over it.

Me too. The Braves' counter-offer including Lester is why the Sox didn't pull the trigger. The Sox initially offered Coco, Hansen, and a third unknown prospect.

Im with you on this. I have to admit, if Theo doesnt do anything huge during the deadline, I wont be completely disappointed. I think this years team was built with stopgaps, and to the surprise of everyone they are playing very well(and in first place  ). I think the worst thing he can do is deal away our future. A bad GM would panic about the moves other teams are making and make a dumb one out of desperation. We dont need to bring another Jeff Suppan type player to Boston. I think he shouldnt touch the lineup we have. Tek being hurt really sucks but at least we have a capable backup and the Nixon injury is another bite but we have a more than capable replacement (WMP) and another quality bench player in Kapler.

This is how I stand, if he can bring in a legitimate #2 guy in to the rotation, then make a deal. But do not sacrifice our top prospects for anything other than the best available option, if there are no "quality" options out there, then dont make a move (I mentioned this with the Suppan deal). If he is not capable of bringing in a pitcher, then go with what you have and focus on the bullpen. Look for another bullpen ace. If you cannot find a bullpen ace or anyone who can significantly help your bullpen, then focus on getting a quality Left Handed specialist ( Ray King and Steve Kline have always been LH bullpen guys who Ive liked).

Its well documented that we dont have good #4 and #5 guys in the rotation, but a better bullpen may equalize this. If and when we get to the playoffs, in a five game series I like our chances with Schill and Beckett and the notion of stealing a third game with Wakefield when hes healthy, or a more seasoned Wells. We must remember that this is essentially spring training for Wells, and I think he will figure it out again, he always has. Adding another arm to the rotation would be huge, but its not the end of the world if he doesnt if we have a strong bullpen to keep the games close and allow our offense to catch up when behind.

I think Theo is playing it smart so far by not jumping the gun.

Sorry if this was mentioned elsewhere, but I didn't see it...

On talks involving a deal that would've sent Clemens to the Red Sox...

Multiple sources say it was a trade that could have been made, even as late as Monday afternoon. All Astros owner Drayton McLane would have had to do was say: "You know, it's the right thing to do."
