I didn't see this mentioned anywhere so I wanted to post this quote from Olney's blog:

"Anybody who has struck rock while using a shovel could relate to the next trade tidbit. Heard from two talent evaluators yesterday that Boston is very active in trying to come up with a large and creative deal, involving more than two teams. Smart thinking, one of them said, if it all works. Crazy stuff you wouldn't normally think of, said another. An executive with an AL team reports that he's heard that a scout was rushed off his area coverage to go scout Boston minor leaguers."

The two key phrases I see here are "Smart thinking," and "crazy stuff you wouldn't normally think of." Olney then goes on to speculate this could involve julio lugo and pitching. I don't see how aquiring lugo fits either of those quotes. I think Theo is trying to do something crazy that would be a big move. I think it would be dumb to think Theo isn't trying to do something big. Of course, I also think he'll walk away if he can't get what he wants for the right price.

ill be pissed if we end up with Lugo. Gonzo's defense make Lugo look like a little leaguer. Lugo does have a very good bat though, and Theo might also be interested in him to drive up the price for the Jays.

Realistically speaking, I'd say the "crazy thinking" probably comes from the fact that Trot Nixon's name is out there. He could also be talking again about Manny Ramirez (he has tried to trade him before) but that wouldn't be wise unless it was a huge deal considering the Sox are in the middle of a pennant race. That would also be deemed as crazy by many.

Personally I'll be surprised if the Sox do anything major. Julio Lugo makes no sense to me for 2006, but as a free agent I'd definately call his agent to get a feel for his asking price and his willingness to play second base. I don't see the need to trade prospects for him now though.

olney just sayed on baseball tonight that this crazy 3 team trade may include the Padres and Mark Loretta

Olney mentioned the deal again, saying the Sox are looking to get Scott Linebrink as part of it.

None of the proposed deals are of the "major" deals that we've heard of before. I imagine that means we're missing the major components, probably because those components--if not traded--will continue to be big players on their respective current teams. Nobody wants to rock the boat with a "we're looking to trade Manny" comment, or a "Peavy is gone". Those don't build morale.

that being said, linebrink would be great. Is Adrian Gonzalez available for any cost, or is he untouchable?

Yea I was wondering if the Padres were one of the team interested in getting Loretta

Maybe the Red Sox feel Pedroia's ready for the Big Show?

All we know for sure is that they've spent a lot of time this week talking with the Padres, Guardians, A's and Rangers -- and those teams have been networking with several other clubs. We also know it sure is tough trying to put together trades that complicated when the clock is ticking on the 31st. So Sunday, says one AL GM, "should be the big day."

Anyone else's heart beating fast? :(

I'm just nervous, hoping we:

a. Don't trade a top prospect (Lester, Hansen, Delcarmen, Pedroia, Ellsbury, Bowden, Buchholz, etc.)

b. Don't trade a position player and leave a hole that is filled by a Wily Mo Pena or Alex Cora.

But yeah I'm pumped.

Boston Globe

There has been some tension in the Sox clubhouse, the type the trading deadline usually brings. Team sources last night indicated the Sox aren't close to a deal, and disputed a report that center fielder Coco Crisp is being shopped. Crisp has been mostly quiet and sometimes snippy lately. But the Sox, according to one National League general manager, have been ``burning up the phone lines. I don't think there's a team trying any harder than Boston to make a deal over the last 24 hours."

So we wait. The Padres had scouts at Fenway yesterday, presumably focusing on the Sox. In need of a third baseman, the Padres have been eyeing Mike Lowell and Kevin Youkilis, but were told that neither was available in a trade for righthanded setup man Scott Linebrink.

Major league sources say the Sox may be lining up a couple of deals, with one contingent upon the other. There are signs the Sox might still be in on the Julio Lugo talks with Tampa Bay. Fox Sports reported the Cardinals are interested in Red Sox second baseman Mark Loretta, which could be the prelude to a deal for Lugo, who would play second in Boston.

The Orioles also had scouts at Fenway yesterday, presumably to watch the Angels in a possible deal for Baltimore shortstop Miguel Tejada. The Sox are still interested in Colorado first base prospect Ryan Shealy.

The Phillies have been mentioned as a possible trade partner with many teams. Starters Jon Lieber and Cory Lidle, lefthanded relievers Arthur Rhodes and Rheal Cormier, and outfielder Bobby Abreu all have been mentioned in scenarios involving the Sox. Lieber, Lidle, and Abreu have also been linked to possible deals with the Yankees.

a) If trading a Hansen, Delcarmen or Pedroia (not both, and not Lester, Paps or Ellsbury) lands us someone to make us the favorites to win the world series this year and next, I'm pumped.

B) Before Gonzo was signed, I thought Cora could fill the void at SS quite nicely. Obviously, now I'd much rather have Gonzo there, but Cora used to be an everyday 2B out in LA. I wouldn't mind seeing him as an everyday player here. I love the guy. And why not seeing WMP everyday? We traded Bronson for him, now let's see what we got. Besides, he's never going to get better without experience, and WMP is a guy that I can endure watching if he strikes out half the time while producing game winning hits on the other end. He's only going to get better.

I prefer to see Nixon the rest of the way in right, and if we trade a Loretta, I would like to see another 2B (looks like Lugo) fill in. You're right on the first one, if we can trade, say, Delcarmen and Murphy for a good (not Mark Redman, dammit) pitcher, I would be excited.

Two articles in the Globe (Edes and Cafardo) suggest more and more it looks like the multi team deal involves Boston, Tampa Bay, and San Diego. In the end the Sox give up Lowell and prospects, and end up with Scott Linebrink and Julio Lugo.

It flies in the face of Terry Francona telling third baseman Mike Lowell last week on the West Coast that he would not be traded, but according to a major league executive who said he spoke directly with one of the three teams involved, the Red Sox are working on a three-way deal with Tampa Bay and San Diego in which they would end up with Devil Rays infielder Julio Lugo and Padres setup man Scott Linebrink, with Lowell going to the Padres. The Devil Rays presumably would end up with prospects from one or both clubs.

Padres special assignment scout Ted Simmons was still in town checking out the Sox, but Boston has indicated it won't move Kevin Youkilis. Sources were indicating the deal, if consummated, would have the Sox getting Devil Rays shortstop Julio Lugo and Padres righty setup man Scott Linebrink, with Mike Lowell heading to San Diego and Tampa Bay receiving prospects from Boston.

Thats good and all... but who are they going to get to replace the offensive and defensive force Lowell has been for Boston? Hell they are already talking about how this could be the year Chavez doesnt win a gold glove
Posted

In my opinion, this would be a huge mistake. Why give up our GG (should win it this year too) 3rd baseman who is part of the best defensive infield in the majors--and who is having a offensive year that nobody though he could. I know his trade value is high, but so is his value to our team right now. One thing people may overlook is they would prob move youk to 3rd. Youk is having a terrific year at 1st and unless they get a GG caliber guy to play over there, it changes how our infield plays as they may not be as confident as they are with Youk scooping!

Also what does this mean for gonzo? Is lugo going to play 3rd? If gonzo goes, then we just broke up the left side of the best infield in baseball-doesn't make too much sense:thumbdown
