The following players have contracts that are set to expire at the end of this season:

Terry Francona (obviously not a player- club option)

Curt Schilling (option)

Trot Nixon

Keith Fouke (option)

Yim Wakefield (option)

Mark Loretta (option)

Jason Johnson (option)

Mike Timlin

Alex Gonzalez

David Wells

Rudy Seanez

Alex Cora

Doug Mirabelli

Willy Mo Pena

Hee Seop Choi

Kevin Youkilis

Lenny DiNardo

Jon Papelbon

Adam Stern

Abe Alvarez

Gabe Kapler

Craig Hansen

Jon Lester

Who do you see the Sox bringing back? I picture them re-signing:

Francona, Schilling, Wakefield, Loretta, Timlin, Gonzalez, Cora, Mirabelli, Pena, Youkilis, DiNardo, Papelbon, Stern, Kapler, Hansen, and Lester.

Now, I am not really up on all this stuff, but I believe you are putting some guys on here who have signed extensions or who are under club control. I'm gonna make corrections, but I could be wrong too feel free to call me out.

Terry Francona (obviously not a player- club option) (signed an extension for three years I thought?

Curt Schilling (option) (had his option automatically picked up with 04 win)

Trot Nixon

Keith Fouke (option)

Yim Wakefield (option)(signed an extension good through next year)

Mark Loretta (option)

Jason Johnson (option)

Mike Timlin

Alex Gonzalez

David Wells

Rudy Seanez

Alex Cora

Doug Mirabelli

Hee Seop Choi

Gabe Kapler

All of the following are under club control until they have six full major league years of experience.

Willy Mo Pena

Kevin Youkilis

Lenny DiNardo

Jon Papelbon

Adam Stern

Abe Alvarez

Craig Hansen ( I could have sworn he inked a four year deal for a mil per season after the draft)

Jon Lester

Of the guys who are reaching free agency I think Cora, Gonzo, Kapler and Belli return.

Terry Francona (obviously not a player- club option) signed a extension

Curt Schilling (option)- Last year for him.

Trot Nixon- This is one i don't know. Pena can fill in but the team without trot would not be the same.

Keith Fouke (option)- No, I see him in the NL, making a run at comeback player of the year.

Yim Wakefield (option) Yes

Mark Loretta (option) Good thing he has an option. Yes

Jason Johnson (option) No

Mike Timlin-Yes. i don't know his plans for retirement though.

Alex Gonzalez- Yes. Don't overpay, but i'd love to see him here next year.

David Wells- retired

Rudy Seanez- No

Alex Cora- Sign him cheap.

Doug Mirabelli- Yeah, we saw wake without him this year. Resign him now.

Willy Mo Pena- club

Hee Seop Choi- let him go

Kevin Youkilis-club

Lenny DiNardo-club

Jon Papelbon-club

Adam Stern-club

Abe Alvarez-club.

Gabe Kapler- resign cheap.

Craig Hansen-signed already

Jon Lester- club

I wonder if Mirabelli and Kapler will be brought back next year. Both have become fan favorites over the years, but is there really any need for either one of them as the team looks to the future?

Belli is really only here because of Wakefield. If Wakefield is moved into the bullpen next year, then yes Doug become expendable

Assuming Wake doesn’t get moved to the pen next year, is Mirabelli the only catcher that can handle his knuckleball? The circumstances that led to Bard given the task were all clouded by the fact that he really didn’t have enough time to learn to handle it. I’d like to see the Sox looking to a younger (and cheaper) option next year for a backup catcher.

Hm....let's see here, this is what I would personally do:

Re-sign:

Terry Francona (obviously not a player- club option)

Curt Schilling (option)

Tim Wakefield (option)

Mark Loretta (option)

Mike Timlin

Alex Gonzalez

Doug Mirabelli

Willy Mo Pena

Kevin Youkilis

Jon Papelbon

Gabe Kapler

Abe Alvarez

Craig Hansen

Jon Lester

Release:

Trot Nixon

Keith Fouke (option)

Jason Johnson (option)

David Wells (Retirement)

Rudy Seanez

Lenny DiNardo

Adam Stern

Hee Seop Choi

Alex Cora

However, if DiNardo and Choi were really cheap (and hell, even Cora), I would re-sign them.

Alex Cora isnt going anywhere. Hes far too valuable, and if they let Loretta walk and Pedroia struggles in ST he is the starting 2B next year. Whenever Cora is on the field good things seem to happen and he is superior UTIL. type guy to have. He does all the small things right. No way he walks.

Choi doesnt have a snowballs chance in hell at coming back. Hes done virtually nothing in AAA. He does not merit a re-signing.
