I probably won't get any support on this, but I'd offer Hansen and Murphy for Clemens. Pitched well again tonight while the Astros got shut out. They're 6 back in the wild card and 10 back in the division and can't score any runs. They probably still wouldn't do it, and Theo probably wouldn't either, but I'd offer it.

Hansen's control continues to be a problem and I'm not sold that he'll be a shut down closer.

Murphy got hot for a couple months but hasn't shown sustained success in the minors.

This seems like the type of move that a desperate baseball team would make, not a team that is leading the AL East with the 2nd best record in baseball. Clemens would be a fine acquisition but not for Hansen. Murphy yes, Hansen, no way.

Hansen is 3 years younger than Joe Nathan was when he started in the bigs for SF, and he is 4 years younger than Brad Lidge was when he first started with Houston.

When Mariano Rivera was Hansen's age he was still 4 seasons away from making it to the Yankees.

I know, those are lofty comparisons but they are simply to prove a point. Hansen has done a phenomenal job for someone who is 22 and still learning how to pitch. I wouldn't trade him for a 43 year old with 14 weeks left in him.

Interesting thought though.

I don't think its desperate. Its desperate if the only goal is to make the playoffs. I think getting Clemens makes us the favorite to win the world series, and I think thats worth Hansen.

Doesn't matter because Houston wouldn't trade him probably, but this is a thread to throw random stuff out there.

Clemens has been struggling to throw 6 innings each time out in the NL. What do you think will happen with better lineups in the AL. Craig Hansen might be inconsistent right now but he is still a rookie. Give the guy a break.

Here is Clemens game log

Only once he has made it to the 7th inning

His ERA is 2.45 and 2 of his 7 starts were against american league teams that are in the playoff hunt, detroit and Minnesota. He had 3 other starts at home in one of the most hitter friendly parks in baseball. He's averaging 6 innings over his last 4 starts, so I don't think its fair to say hes been struggling to throw 6. I can understand people not wanting to give up Hansen. I can agree to disagree on that. Arguing that Clemens would be anything other than a huge pickup is rediculous though.

Im starting to think that Theo might be conent with a rotation looking like this until Wake comes back. The wild card is the durability of Wells. That being said about durability issues, anyone else think the Sox might just shut Clement down for the rest of the season? Every update on him Ive heard, the Sox reps dont sound all that optimistic and move onto another subject

Schilling

Beckett

Lester

Wells

Snyder

Yesterday on ESPN they were doing this thing on the ALL-TIME MLB team. Some Highlights:

Wille Mays CF

Joe Morgan 2b

Bench C

Mike Schmidt 3B

ARod SS

guess who they had as their pitcher? You guessed it...Roger Clemens! Blister boy himself.

Once I saw that I just laughed...this guy has come up short in big situations as often as any pitcher I can ever remember...he is the anti-John Smoltz when it comes to big game pitching.

Hansen for Clemens? fuuuuuuuk no.

You know what I don't like A-Rod or anything but I respect the guy. Anyone who can do their job while knowing he's not playing a postion where he should be and not complain about it, is alright in my book.

According to the Herald, the Sox have little interest in Cory Lidle, but are intrigued by Jon Lieber. :(

Fortunately, no deal is close to happening because the Phillies are looking for either Lester or Hansen in return.

Lester or Hansen for Jon Lieber

....there must be a lot of drinking going on at that front office

Todd Walker is being shopped around, mostly as a reserve 1st baseman. Youkilis cant play every day and Loretta as the plan B option and has yet to play there this season. Walker would give us a good bat off the bench, a welcome back fan favorite & a good clubhouse guy. Thoughts? :dunno:

gee

think jt snow is available??

theo did the same thing last year with jay payton and he ended up with better #s than nixon in half a season

of course he too was a fuking jerk so i really shouldnt be attacking epstein over this

depth is essential in this game

snow, even at his age,is a decent hitter with a good glove

dfa'ing him wasnt brite in my opinion

J.T. Snow, according to Gordon Edes, has quitely retired

And I agree that you shouldnt be attacking Theo for trading away Jay Payton. He was becoming a clubhouse cancer (a la Shea Hillenbarnd) and had a face to face shouting match with Tito. I stand by Theo just ridding themsleves of this "me me" player

i cant argue with ya there sir

despite my being sickened by paytons 2nd half perfomance in oakland and chad bradford sucking on the return end of the deal you cant keep these guys who are basically spoiled *******s on the club for obvious reasons

same for shea

They should be happy that some team will take his bloated contract.

I don't think the Red Sox should be shopping that much around just for the sake of making a deal. It was Billy Beane who said that you'll f*** yourselves over if you make a trade just to make one at the deadline, and I think he's right by thinking that. If I were the Red Sox right now, realistically, all I need to get into the playoffs is a decent pitcher with some experience, a reliever to bolster the bullpen, and a corner infielder. I think we should try to get something hammered out with the Rockies or Padres, something like Seanez, Tavarez and someone in the minors like Chad Spann for one of Colorado's starters (not BK Kim), Ray King, and Ryan Shealy. We can afford to cover some of Tavarez's contract for next year, so Theo should stop trying to get a low-market team to pay $3,000,000+ to a player who's not worth half of that. Plus, this trade would fill just about all of our needs, and allow us to really get a step up on the Yankees. I know Spann is one of our best prospects, but Shealy is at a higher level and a trade for him would also open up a door with the Padres where we could send Mike Lowell over there for Scott Linebrink and still not need a prospect at third. Linebrink's hurt now but is a very, very talented setup man. So, let's see what would happen if we made both of these moves:

Changes that would be made:

1B: Ryan Shealy (replaces Kevin Youkilis)

3B: Kevin Youkilis (replaces Mike Lowell)

Rotation: Curt Schilling, Josh Beckett, Colorado SP (Jason Jennings?), Jon Lester, David Wells

RP: Scott Linebrink (replaces Julian Tavarez)

RP: Ray King (replaces Rudy Seanez)

What do you think?

i would give up a tad of D for Miguel Cabrera
For Miguel Cabrera you'd give up a truckload of prospects. I'd be willing to offer Pedroia, Ellsbury, Hansen + more. Cabrera is bona fide stud. There isn't a prospect in the current system that will be as good as Cabrera.

I love Cabrera, and I'd love to add the next Manny to our team, but I think this defense is going to be what could win us the World Series this year. Down the road I would definatly love to have Cabrera, but right now I'm against moving any starting fielder.
