Red Sox Interested In Klesko?

A reader passed along a trade rumor heard this morning on WEEI in Boston from Sean MacAdams. Here's the report:

The Red Sox would send reliever Rudy Seanez to the Padres for first baseman Ryan Klesko.

Some background seems appropriate. Seanez is a 37 year-old right-handed reliever signed to a one-year, $1.9MM deal by the Red Sox this winter. The club has a $2.1MM option for '07 that can be bought out for $200,000. Seanez also will earn incentives this year for his number of appearances.

Last year with the Padres was easily the best season of his career; he was worth more than three wins and had the third best strikeout rate in the game among pitchers with 60 innings. He's toiled for eight different teams and a return to San Diego would mark his third stint with the Pads. Seanez has seen all of his peripherals decline in his 33 innings this year, and he's projected by Baseball Prospectus to be out of the game by '08. He spent time on the DL last year with shoulder discomfort.

I'm sure you're familiar with 35 year-old slugger Ryan Klesko. He was once a feared six-win player in the early part of the decade with San Diego. The left-hander was acquired by the Padres in a blockbuster deal in 1999 along with Bret Boone in exchange for Quilvio Veras, Wally Joyner, and Reggie Sanders. Klesko has a no-trade clause as a 10 and 5 player as part of his complicated, reworked contract; he makes $8MM in the final year of the deal. Kevin Towers has already said he will not exercise the '07 option.

Klesko hopes to return to the Padres around August 1st after having shoulder surgery on his A/C joint in April. He hasn't topped 500 ABs since 2002, but remains adept at drawing walks and may owe last year's career-low slugging percentage to his painful shoulder and a pinched nerve in his neck. Klesko would certainly clear waivers, so the Padres have until August 31st to deal him. He's willing to waive his no-trade rights if he's not getting playing time with the Padres and he's being sent to a contender. That's probably the main wrinkle in this possible deal - Klesko would only be a bench player in Boston. In addition, Kevin Towers's main concern right now is finding a third baseman.

There was a previous topic about the pads wanting a third basemen. if theo could work out a move with us getting Klesko and maybe someone like young, Peavy or williams while we send Lowell, Seanez, Wells and cash that would work out great. It probably won't happen but i'm just throwing it out there.

I'd trade seanez for barbra streisand at this point, that would definetly be a good trade, but forget about Lowell in the deal. They wouldn't give up Peavy in this trade anyway.

Maybe, however I don't want to see Lowell traded. We have the best defensive infield in the league and he has also been solid offensively.

Jake Peavy won't be moved and in all honesty...thats not something we necessarily have to look at. Don't get me wrong I would love to have Peavy but the Red Sox don't need to get into a blockbuster of that caliber at this time.

Someone like Woody Williams is interesting considering his experience. I can't imagine he would be expensive and he could give us around a 4.50 ERA in the #5 spot. That would help us get through the season and if you could package him with Ryan Klesko....that fills some holes. Chris Young is getting to a point where he would be expensive to trade for.

Does anyone have knowledge about Chan Ho Park?? There was a time he was a very good pitcher but lost his stuff in Texas....is he returning to form??

4.29 era in the NL= No thanks.

That doesn't necessarily mean anything. I think we are taking this NL vs. AL thing too far. There are a great number of pitchers in the AL that are not ace caliber but are able to hold there own. Thats what the Red Sox need...someone who can keep the team in games and eat some innings. They may give up an extra run per game....but with the Red Sox they gain an extra 1-2 runs a game.

Chan Ho Park should not be anywhere near the Fenway mound, unless he is on the opposite team. He's basically in the best situation right now, he is in one of the best pitcher's parks in San Diego and the NL hitters have been worse than the AL this season, and he still has an ERA over 4. This is also a good year for him compared to recent seasons as his ERA has been over 5 since 2002. N-O.

I was going to say Chan ho park but I thought he was struggling. I checked and he is 6-4 with a 4.29 era.

You actually considered Chan Ho Park? I'd rather sign someone off the street than trade for him.

Yeah I'm not real sure why we would have interest in Klesko. He had a few good years, but he hasn't even taken an AB this season. I don't see how he would improve this team in any way.

Well we get rid of seanez in the deal. Thats not bad.

Klesko has gone through a lot of injury plauged seasons in SD, but hopefully he can get out of that here. He is also a 5-10 player aand gets his no trade clause. He wants to go to a contender and not be on the bench.

If he comes to Boston, he will be on the bench. He does nothing better than anyone in the lineup, and is not a good defensive player.
