I've been hearing the deal would have to involve either Delcarmen or Hansen, and if thats the case then the trade is tragic and doesn't make any sense. Who cares if the Yankees want Abreu? I understand they're in the same division and are Boston's historic rivals, but stop making moves based on what the Yankees desire. I understand Abreu is an on-base machine and is also sporting a .914 OPS so far this year. He certainly would be a good # 5 hitter. It's just that they are starting to develop a nice little bridge to Papelbon with Manny in the 7th and Hansen in the 8th. I don't want to sacrifice the future bullpen.

If they want Delcarmen or Hansen then the Red Sox probably wouldn't have to worry about the Yankees aquiring him.

IMO Abreu wouldn't be worth what we are giving up for him. It doesn't seem like the "New" Red Sox to sell the farm for a player. Wily Mo will be here for some odd years and in the end be a better choice then Abreu. I don't think we want 3 mashers on the wrong side of 30.

Abreu would be under contract until at least 2007. This would give the Sox another year to continue with an OF platoon (Abreu/WMP) and give WMP an extra year to develop. By then end of next year they should have a clear picture of WMP’s abilities and potential, and can make a decision then what their future OF will be like.

I basically look at this way: It gives the Sox an extra year with a seasoned outfielder, without the history of health problems that Trot has.

Young pitching for old hitting is retarded. Taking young arms out of our bullpen is about as good an idea as putting a screen door on a submarine. I guarentee we are missing key details here. This move would do NOTHING to help us this year, and as far as I'm concerned losing Hansen and Delcarmen and getting a 30+ hitter alone in return is hurting us in 07 and beyond which - considering the recent organizational focus on the future - makes NO SENSE. I guarentee there is a third team or a player involved that we know nothing about.

Depends what young pitching we are talking about. Certainly not Hansen or Delcarmen for Abreu. Those two young guys will help the Red Sox win more games for us than Abreu over Nixon.

I can see this deal going down if its Nixon headed to Philly but not if its Delcarmen or Hansen, thats just not Theo's type of move

This article from SI.com discusses the Abreu/Nixon trade and doesn’t mention anything about young pitchers being involved. If it’s a straight up Nixon for Abreu trade, or something close without any young pitchers being involved...except maybe Abe Alvarez, then you‘ve gotta consider it. (Wouldn’t it be nice to send Clement off on this one and get rid of his contract too.)

I really don't understand why Philly wants to trade him, he's a 32 year old player who can play the field, put up 20-30 homers a year, 100+ RBI's, steal around 30 bases and bat about 300. year in year out. Does anyone know his contract situation? I can't imagine it being that bad.

EDIT: 20th highest contract in baseball at 13.6 mil.

hes getting 13mil this year, and i believe 15mil next year and a club option for 08' at 16mil. Its a good amount of money, Id prefer to give the spot to Pena, save 15mil (if we were to do the Abreu deal) and spend the money on good SP. But if its just Nixon for Abreu or just Nixon and Alvarez for Abreu I think that would be ok.

Maybe its a salary dump it makes some sense but I'm inclined to not want to mess with the dynamic of a so-far-sucessful offense. I would give second tier AA or AAA pitching. Alvarez, Chris Smith, etc. Not any of the guys currently up, or any of the guys in A ball like Bowden.

This is what I am trying to say, also aren't they trying to get even more youthful in the coming years? Why would they bring in somebody who's 32 years old?

who would do a straight Nixon for Abreu trade, I mean, Nixon is a good player and all, but there has to be another player involved here, I mean hopefully it is Alvarez or Clement, but not many teams are that stupid or desperate

It could be part of some future plan to move Manny out of here, just speculation: Pena, Crisp & Abreu.

Kind of a bummer for Pena though, if our outfield is Abreu, Crisp and Manny.

Theo has said that he won't jeopardize the future to make a move.

But...he has also shown that if he feels a championship is within reach he will pull the trigger on a deal involving some good prospects (i.e Matt Murton in the Nomar trade)

It'll be interesting to see what happens on July 31st. Personally, I would be in favor of the trade if it was either just Trot or Trot and a decent prospect, like Abe Alvarez. I would not want to see Delcarmen or Hansen traded in this deal.

I take it there's no chance that Philly is willing to part with Cole Hamels, is there? If we could bring him and Abreu over in the deal, that would greatly benefit the club this year and in the future...Hamels is young and has the definite capability of being our 5th starter from the day we acquire him. Health has been an issue, albeit a minor one, with him thusfar, though.

I doubt they would trade him, especially in a deal like this where Philly is trading the best player in the trade and they would be making the deal with intent on helping the future. He is a promising young pitching prospect though and it would be nice if we could pick him up in the trade, however it's doubtful.

He was excellent in college, he has been compared to orel hershiser and jamie moyer, he has been said to have the best command and changeup in the Red Sox farm system. I'd call him an average-decent prospect.

Alvarez command is gone as he gives up a ton of gopher balls. He is not even a top 40 red sox prospect in my book anymore. If I'm the Red Sox I get rid of him ASAP.

I would get rid of him too, and hopefully we can trade Nixon and Alvarez, and not Delcarmen or Hansen, and acquire Abreu if this trade goes down.

Abe Alvarez could have a decent career in the National League

Agreed, but he shouldn't be a dealbreaker, we should definetly deal him if the proposed trade was Abreu for Nixon and Alvarez.

Am I the only one thinking Trot in another Uni would be sacrilege? I know getting an all-star in return would warrant the trade but I just can't picture him in any other gear.

One important fact that I don’t believe has been mentioned is that Trot is nearing his 8th full season with the Sox. From what I calculate it will be sometime toward the end of this season.

When Tek’s new contact was given in 2004 a clause was added, thanks to Scott Boras, that stipulates any player who’s been on the team for 8 full uninterrupted seasons, is guaranteed no-trade protection. Unless the Sox make a move to trade Trot before the 8th year kicks in, and presumably before the trade deadline, then he will have that no-trade protection.

Well if his 8th season is coming up it better be before 7/31 or its all moot, as he will either resign with the sox or be a FA.

Let me get this straight, Tek's contract will grant Trot a NTC? Please provide a link for this. It doesn't sound right at all, and this is the first time I've heard anything about it.

I found this on redsox.com which refers to the no trade protection resulting from Tek‘s 2004 contract.

Because Varitek places a tremendous priority on the stability of his family, a no-trade clause was vital to him. While the Red Sox didn't break club policy on that front, they instituted a new club rule -- one suggested by Boras -- that will indirectly give Varitek a no-trade clause by the end of 2005.

From here forward, players who already have a certain amount of no-trade protection in their contracts can not be traded by the Red Sox without permission if they have at least eight years of uninterrupted service with the team.

Varitek was called up to Boston in September, 1997, for good, meaning he will have eight years of continuous service in September, 2005. Trot Nixon will reach that status during the 2006 season.
