I got this from another message board:

For Red Sox to finish 1st

Yankees going 400** rest of way

Yankees 76-50-----14-22-----90-72

Red Sox 71-56-----20-15-----91-71 -----571

Yankees going 500 rest of way

Yankees 76-50-----18-18-----94-68

Red Sox 71-56-----24-11-----95-67 -----686

Yankees going current winning % rest of way**

Yankees 76-50-----22-14-----98-64

Red Sox 71-56-----28-7-----99-63-----800

** = close as possible (couldnt get exactly 400, 400 of 36 is 14.4 wins)

When you consider how easy the Yankee schedule is after next week end I cant see the Yankees finishing worse then 96-66 which means the Red Sox have to play almost 800 baseball. So its either going to take yet another massive collapse or the Red Sox are going to have to play what IMO is way above there head.

it doesnt look good but if we can show up in NY in mid september anything can happen.

Thats another thing I was thinking about. For you guys to really put a dent in that lead head to head you have to have a New York beatdown (sweep).

Well, anything can happen after the series going on now. If the Sox sweep (like they should) and the Yanks get swept by those pesky Angels, we'll be 2.5 out by the time the next series starts.

Wouldn't that exchange right there drastically change how each team would need to play?

Sure, but as badly as the Yankees play against the Angels I dont see a sweep and as bad as the M's are I dont see a sweep. You guys have a much tougher schedule then us in Sept. But hey you guys do have 6 games against the O's! So I guess things even out.

I don't necessarily buy into the tough schedule theory. Sure, the better teams will play you harder, but if you have a "tougher" schedule and you're in the middle of a pennant race, you really find out what kind of team you are during those games. I believe that playoff-deserving teams will turn it up and beat whatever teams are in their path, good or bad. If you struggle, you obviously wouldn't survive in October. There's no question that we'll see what kind of team the Red Sox are come mid-September.

I believe last year in Sept the Blue Jays took 3 of 4 from you guys allowing the Yankees to jump back into the race after falling behind 5 games in mid Sept. I'm not saying the Red Sox CANT come back but like I said before the Red Sox are going to have to go on one hell of a run because I dont see the Yankees playing 500 against the likes of KC, Baltimore, Tampa and even the Blue Jays who the Yankees play well as opposed to the Red Sox.

I just checked it the Red Sox actually split against the Blue Jays at home. It wasnt that the Red Sox tanked it down the end of the season the Yankees played somewhere around 700 baseball down the strech. I guess anything can happen.

Exactly. The Sox got beat by the Jays (a team they should have done very well against), and the Yanks played well enough to keep up and eventually tie us for the division lead, and winning the division through the tie breaker. Because of that, the Sox made an early exit out of the playoffs after getting swept. SWEPT.

EDIT: Still though, even if they split that series, the Yanks were playing better than the Red Sox. Case closed. The Sox didn't play well enough to win the division, they dropped down to the wild card team, and they were swept out of the playoffs.

Yeah I pretty much said that in my last post. The Yankees played amazing baseball down the strech that included a 10 game winning streak. Really anything can happen.

I wonder how Torre will play this if it stays tied into the eigth? He'll probably let proctor face the bottom of the order in the seventh, but I don't know if he'll go to farnsworth in a tie game in the eighth. Also, I don't see a lefty to let Myers face besides Anderson who won't be pinch hit for.

Gift run. I'll take it, although on the replay it looked like his leg might have been over the plate but not on it when sheilds slapped the tag on him. Hopefully Proctor to Farnsworth to Rivera (maybe for more than three outs can get it done). Mo hasn't pitched since Sunday, so a 4-6 out save may not be out of the question.

Is OTH Johnny breaking Yankee policy with his mustache?

No, mustaches are allowed. Reggie, Munson all of those guys in the 70's had them. The hitman himself Don Mattingly had one also which is why all of those guys are growing staches. Giambi started it and now its becoming a team thing.
