I think it's something like this....

 

(H - HR) / (TBF - HR - SO - BB - HBP - IBB - SH)

 

Total batters faced minus HR, SO, BB, IBB, HBP, and SH should give you the amount of balls put in play. Or, you could grab it from The Harball Times website.
