He's talking about how its shown on the jumbotron.

It's not like the fans randomly break out into song in the 8th. The team plays the song. I don't see why this is such an affront to our singing integrity.

It's comes from the movie Beautiful Girls, which takes place in New England. During a scene in a bar, a group of people sing Sweet Caroline.

In all the previous years, there were no lyrics on the jumbotron, they played it, we sung it. They've taken all the joy and quirkiness out of it. It's like singing "Take Me Out To The Ballgame," it's basically forced.

I wonder who thought of this idea? and there reason behind it? it has nothing to do with baseball;)

i think I heard that it was a sound operator in the 70s who really liked Neil Diamond, played it a couple times and it stuck

hmmmm, maybe they put the words on the jumbotron for the first time Fenway faithful who dont have Neil Diamond CDs or records laying around their house

its become the anthem for the biffs and buffys who now fester in fenway park

somehow this franchise existed for 100 years without it

nothing like watching 2 men in designer jeans swaying to the sounds of neil diamond with their fingers interlocked like the lovers that they are unless its journeys ""dont stop believing"" that theyre dancing and singing to....

what happened to this country??

What's the big deal? Like someone said, maybe they're up there for people who don't know the words.

Really not important in the big scheme of things.

From what I've read as to the origins of Sweet Caroline, Amy Tobey, who's assignment was to decide what music would be played at Fenway from 1998 to 2004 heard it at other ballparks, liked it, and started using it late in the game if she felt the Red Sox were going to win, whether they were ahead or behind. The fans loved it, and the new ownership eventually decided to play it at every home game.

I've also read, though, that it was played as a tribute to someone who worked at Fenway having a baby and naming it Caroline.

Whatever the reason, I love it. It's been my ringtone on my phone for some time now!
