Ok lets try & at least avoid a sweep. Wakefield, with his ******** 4-7 record, will look to salvage this series. Stat wise he has been the 2nd best starter of the year. He's been racking up quality starts, 2nd in ERA at 3.93 and innings pitched with 87. However as we know, Sox bats are left in the dugout when he pitches. A struggling Carlos Silva is on the mound... will the Sox take advantange?

Wakefield will try to salvage finale

Boston (36-27) at Minnesota (30-34), 8:10 p.m. ET

MINNEAPOLIS -- Red Sox manager Terry Francona is hoping Tim Wakefield, or any of his starters for that matter, can give him quality starts on a regular basis. With Keith Foulke on the 15-day disabled list and Mike Timlin just returning, the Red Sox are somewhat limited in the bullpen. Francona said they're lacking a pitcher who can throw three-plus innings if a starter finds himself in early trouble. "We don't have that guy right now," he said. "Rather than one guy, we would lump it together with some guys going two innings."

Francona said he'll start looking to his younger pitchers, like right-handers Manny Delcarmen and Jermaine Van Buren, in tight situations. Both pitched Wednesday night against Minnesota with the score within striking distance. Van Buren recorded two outs against the Twins, but loaded the bases in the sixth inning and walked in a run before being pulled. Delcarmen entered the game and surrendered a grand slam to Justin Morneau.

"Part of my responsibility is helping these guys develop, but we'll try to give the younger guys a little bit more rope in some situations," Francona said. "I think it's sooner rather than later. Part of the dilemma is how to bring them along, and that's something I fight with." And until Timlin becomes more comfortable, he probably won't be throwing a lot innings.

In his first game off the disabled list on Tuesday night, Timlin pitched a perfect 11th inning, but Francona didn't want to send him out for a second inning so soon. Timlin didn't pitch Wednesday night, either, even though the Red Sox handed the ball to three relievers after Matt Clement's early exit. "Getting [Timlin] stacked up this early might not be a good idea," Francona said.

Just announced on WEEI: Riske traded to White Sox for Javier Lopez.

Should be available for tonight's game.

Riske was starting to turn things around, I wish him the best of luck in Chicago. Granted, wouldve liked it better if it was Tavarez.

Javier Lopez has one stat that stands out, he's a left-hander reliever that can get those tough outs. Theo fixing a need right there

Riske dealt for reliever

By Steve Silva, Boston.com Staff

The Red Sox made a move to shake up their beleaguered bullpen today, trading righthander David Riske to the Chicago White Sox for minor league pitcher Javier Lopez.

The 30-year-old Lopez, a lefthanded closer for Triple-A Charlotte, had a 0.55 ERA with 12 saves this season before the deal. The Sox announced he would be in uniform (and wear No. 48) for tonight’s game in Minnesota.

The following info comes directly from the Red Sox:

Lopez has pitched in 171 major league games with Colorado and Arizona, is tied for fourth in the International League in saves and is tied for eighth in appearances. He has held lefthanded hitters to a .171 (6-35) batting average and has a groundball/flyball ratio of 64/25 (72%), the latter ranking second best in the International League and fourth best in all of professional baseball (MLB and minors) among pitchers with at least 30 innings pitched.

Lopez has not allowed a run in his last 9.1 innings over eight appearances with the Knights beginning May 25 and has earned saves in his last five and six of seven appearances.

Signed by the White Sox as a free agent in December 2005, Lopez is 6-4, 6.09 with three saves in his major league career with Colorado (2003-05) and Arizona (2005). In his big league career, he has allowed just 22% (26 of 118) of inherited runners to score while holding lefthanded batters to a .246 batting average.

The lefthander was 4-1 with a 3.70 ERA in a career best and club rookie record 75 appearances with the Rockies in his rookie season in 2003. He issued just two earned runs in his first 30 appearances that season. Lopez appeared in 64 games with Colorado in 2004 and last season was 1-1 in 32 contests with the Rockies and Diaamondbacks while also pitching in 27 games at Triple-A Tucson.

A fourth round selection of Arizona in the 1998 First-Year Player Draft, Lopez was picked by Boston in the Rule 5 Major League Draft in December 2002. The Red Sox traded Lopez to Colorado in March 2003.

Riske is 0-1 with a 3.72 ERA in eight relief appearances with the Red Sox this season. He was on the disabled list from April 12-May 22 with a lower back strain. The righthander had been acquired from Cleveland in a six-player trade on January 27, 2006.

Yeah, I wouldve much rather traded Tavarez or Seanez, because Riske is a much betetr pitcher than he showcased in his little time here. However Lopez doenst sound half bad, and tehres always a chance he can become a reliable asset to us, especially in tough situations, such as the 12th inning. What we need right now is a solid reliver otehr than Timlin or Papelbon.

I posted this in the riske thread, but:

Gammo was just on WEEI (big show) and said that the WS actually wanted Seanez, but settled for Riske!

I can see some reasons whyd we wanna keep him, but I dont think Seanez is better than Riske.

Sox lineup tonight

1. Kevin Youkilis, 1B

2. Alex Cora, 2B

3. David Ortiz, DH

4. Manny Ramirez, LF

5. Trot Nixon, RF

6. Mike Lowell, 3B

7. Coco Crisp, CF

8. Doug Mirabelli, C

9. Alex Gonzalez, SS

Loretta doesn't start and Cora is batting 2nd. IMO this might have been a good opportunity for Trot to hit in the #2 spot.

how bout Crisp in the 2 slot Tito? Cora? umm..ok. Cora hasn't batted 2nd since High School..if that.

Because of that.

(He was also 4-12 against him).

id rather Gonzo in the 2 spot over Cora, the way he's hitting the ball now. But ya obviuosly Youk and Coco should be in the first 2 spots of the order tonight

Cora is 4/12 against Silva

Coco is 4/13 against him

Gonzo is 3/7 against him

this is getting pathetic..for some reason I feel if we can get just one BIG hit..like a bases clearing double...2 or 3 run jack..I think the floodgates will open. No way we get swept by these f***ing clowns.
