Sori returning to Bronx?

Jun 13 - According to a report in the New York Post, the Nationals are willing to trade Alfonso Soriano to the Yankees but only if right-handed pitching prospect Philip Hughes, 19, is included in the deal.

Hughes, presently pitching in Double-A, is considered to be the Yankees' top pitching prospect.

"Obviously I know what our shortcomings are," Yankees GM Brian Cashman told the paper. "But I also know we are better than this. I will try to address whatever shortcomings we have."

Soriano is in the final year of his current contract, and if acquired by the Yankees would fill one of the spots in their outfield created by the injuries to Gary Sheffield and Hideki Matsui.

I don't see the Yankees parting ways with Phillip Hughes in order to get Soriano, so that's out of the question. Two other teams interested in Soriano, however, are the Dodgers and the Angels.

That's a mistake.

Yep, sign him onto a team going nowhere (for at least the next 2 years) for cash you can spend on better things.

I disagree with you and Crespo. We dont know the deals that were offered. What if they were only offered a couple of A prospects that arent great? They cant just give him away. If they get him signed to a long term deal all of a sudden they have a player that the fan base can get hooked too and a player to build around.

The Nationals aren't built to win now. They aren't built to win in '07. Adding Soriano for four years while he absorbs 10 to 15% of their budget won't help. Landing prospects would probably help the team. They probably could have gotten Sanchez and Thames from the Tigers, or Garza and Kubel from the Twins. Those players are more valuable to the Nationals. Plus, there's no guarantee that Soriano will resign with the Nationals. However, the Nationals might feel compelled to give him a big contract. Probably $13 to $15 million annually. Not a wise investment when the team isn't built to win.

When they get a new stadium built, they should be able to make a move.

Well if they could have gotten Sanchez or Garza for Soriano then Bowden is a fool. I'm assuming that those teams werent willing to give up those kind of prospects. Guys like Stark and Olney said they werent willing to part with those players.

I'm assuming they would have parted for at least one of them. The Nationals probably wanted three blue-chip prospects, seeing what they got for Bray and Majeskwi.

Could they have gotten Baker, Kubel, and Bonser for Soriano? If they could, they should have pulled the trigger. If they got at least one pitching prospect back, they should have done it.

Soriano won't be around when the Nationals are contending. He may not be around in '07.

Well I guess robbing the Reds came back to haunt them if they were looking to rob another team. If you could get one of those pitching prospects then it was certainly worth it.
