BRONX, New York (Ticker) -- In just his second major league start, David Pauley will attempt to help the Boston Red Sox bounce back from a trouncing against their bitter American League East rival.

Pauley will take the mound in the second of four games against the New York Yankees, who turned what was supposed to be a duel between Josh Beckett and Mike Mussina into a 13-5 rout in Monday's series opener.

Andy Phillips and Jason Giambi each hit a three-run homer off Beckett during a seven-run second inning for the Yankees, who accounted for all their scoring in the first three innings to extend their winning streak against the Red Sox to three games.

The teams have split the first eight games of the season series.

With the victory, New York overtook Boston by one-half game atop the AL East. The Yankees and Red Sox have finished 1-2 in the division each of the last three seasons.

New to a rivalry over a century old is Pauley (0-0, 12.46 ERA), who allowed six runs and 11 hits in 4 1/3 innings of his major league debut Wednesday at Toronto. Pauley, who will turn 23 on June 17, was not involved in the decision - an eventual 8-6 triumph.

The Yankees will counter with Chien-Ming Wang (5-2, 4.82), who was credited with his first career save Saturday - two days after allowing five runs and eight hits in four frames at Detroit. In his most recent start against Boston on May 22, Wang surrendered seven runs and nine hits in six innings of a 9-5 loss at Fenway Park.

In four lifetime appearances - three starts - against the Red Sox, the 26-year-old Wang is 0-2 with a 6.04 ERA. He has gone 2-6 in his career against teams within the division but 10-0 vs. the rest of the AL.

Yankees rookie Melky Cabrera hit a two-run double to highlight a five-run third inning for the Yankees on Monday, extending his hitting streak to eight games. He has batted .318 (7-for-22) with seven RBI in his first seven games against the Red Sox.

I sure hope he makes it through 6 batters tonight:blink: He is a groundball pitcher so we have a chance. At least backbackbackback beckett has the day off!

tomorrow buddy

You misunderstood him. He's saying he's heard a rumor that the Sox are going to skip that rookie in favor of Schilling out of desperation.

well, I still dont think that will happen. That would just put Clement up against Johnson in the series ender, and that is basically the same result

Though its a rookie pitching, I do not expect the bats to be strong like yesterday, but I hope we can spot some runs up for Wang, and I think we might need like 7-10 to win this one, we'll have to see.

I just made a bet with myself:

If Schill starts tonight and they move up the rotation - something I'm loving the idea of right now, then I will take tomorrow off from work.

If they don't I'll just go in late.

Doesn't matter how many injuries the sox have, it will never compare to the calamity that is the NY season thus far--at least according to ESPN

This could be good, because Foulke was on pace to get more innings than ever before in his career---get him strait becuase we are going to need him down the stretch!

I love Cora, but why would you not play gonzo on a night when you need the best D possible with a sinker pitcher on the mound!
Posted

Cora's good on D. Just not as good as Gonzo. Not a big difference if your talking about mildly difficult plays.

No Jeter.

Foulke's got a bad back - which, if you are going to go on the DL, is not the worst thing. Plus I guess he could use a blow if he's on a record innings pace. Who will they bring up? EEI mentioned earlier that they would probably bring someone up to backup Pauley as early as tonight, so I expect something crappy.

Looks like the sox will have Hansen in uniform tonight per WEEI! Foulke to the DL!

I just heard that it will be Van Buren sent down to make room on the roster.
