ST. LOUIS -- Albert Pujols was removed from the Cardinals' game on Saturday against the Cubs due to strained right oblique muscle.

With one out in the top of the second inning, Pujols chased a short foul popup by Chicago third baseman Aramis Ramirez. He stopped short of catching the ball, and television replays showed that he grabbed at his right lower back on the play. Pujols will be re-examined Sunday and his status will be determined at that point.

Cardinals assistant athletic trainer Greg Hauck and manager Tony La Russa came out to check on Pujols, but he remained in the game for the remainder of the second. His spot did not come up in the bottom of the third inning. When the Cardinals took the field defensively for the top of the third, John Rodriguez was inserted in left field and left fielder Hector Luna had moved to first base.

Pujols, the reigning National League Most Valuable Player, has missed just two games this year -- one due to back discomfort. He felt stiffness in his lower back and was held out of a game May 2 against Cincinnati. On May 18, two days after taking a fall in a game against New York, he was kept out of the lineup for a day game after a night game.

Lets hope its as minimally serious as it sounds.

hes likely to go on the DL

Albert Pujols will likely be forced to go on the disabled list after leaving Saturday's game with a strained oblique. "If you told me right now that he'd be out two weeks, I would buy you dinner the rest of the year," manager Tony La Russa said.

Pujols was hurt chasing after a foul ball against the Cubs. "He's going to miss a significant period of time, anywhere from a little significant to real significant," La Russa said. "You can't tell for another 18-24 (hours), but it's something you have to deal with." The Cardinals will have to keep piecing things together while Pujols is out. Calling up Brian Daubach to act as a first baseman against right-handers might work. Scott Spiezio is likely to see a lot of time at the position. Jun. 3 - 9:41 pm et

Oh, well, the Cardinals still have a good rotation, and will stay competitive, but they will definitely not dominate the Central when Pujols is missing, and if Houston or Cincinnati can make a run, it should be a good race to the end.

Perhaps a 1975 rematch world series, a little, Cincy vs. Boston?

Cincy is going to finish 4th in the division, maybe 5th if the Cubs can ever get it together. Living in an NL city, with a team in the same division, I've seen a lot of the Reds games, and nothing about them says playoff team.
