If we did trade Manny, it would certainly be for someone more than just Schmidt. He's a good pitcher, but not even close to equal value as Manny.

If you were going to choose a pitcher in the major leagues of equal value who would it be???

theres really no one pitcher available who is equal value to manny. Maybe a package from Anaheim with Escobar, Cabrera and Shields would be acceptable.

Probably not equal value, and definitely unrealistic, but I want Scott Kazmir,

My answer is Barry Zito/Roy Oswalt

Both Zito and Oswalt are around 5 years younger than Manny Ramirez. Forget the money, would you make that deal if you were Oakland or Houston??

placing to much value on Manny Ramirez? He's one of the best hitters in all of baseball. He's a consistent .300 hitter with 45 HR a year guy. Whether or not they'd trade Oswalt for him, it seems like fair value to me.

how many times do i have to say this, the guys on weei are terrible. my mother could report on the sox as well as they could. you could have a obp clip of .310 and they would think you are a good player because you bat .300.

anywho. the sox don't need too many changes. we have a very solid team, one that is capable of winning it all with the staff/crew that is rostered. signing clemens would be terrible. i wouldn't be happy with it. i would feel like the yankees, i would feel like we are purchasing a championship. 15+ mill for a 1/2 season rental. that is silly to say the least.

right now our most important need is a starter. papelbon would have fit that perfectly, but with timlin out right now it's going to be hard to work him back to the role. they are trying with hansen but i'm not too comfortable with a sept callup having a rookie (if he comes up) be our 5th.

either way i'm happy with the direction of the team, we are winning games, making decent comebacks and pitching seems to be holding together. sit back and enjoy the rest of the summer games boys. it's much more fun to win a 7 game series than to sweep teams in the playoffs anyways. that's why we keep guys like clement and dinardo (:D)

I actually think Houston could consider it, their outfield is mediocre and Wandy Rodriguez is looking very promising

losing oswalt would absolutely cripple houston.

pitching has not necessarily been a problem for them, run support has. I do not think by any stretch that it will happen, but I do think they are about equal value. IMO Oswalt is not as critical to Houston as people think.

Ok so...you would take a .300 average hitter who can knock in 120+ RBI and 40+ HRs over a pitcher who can pitch 200 innings and win you 20 games with a 3.00 ERA?

.....I'm taking the pitcher hands down.

i agree with you. They've only had 2 consistent hitters this year, Berkman and Ensberg. Lane has sucked for them all year and Taveras has struggled so far. Manny could fit in very nicely there.

Their rotation would be fine if they get Roger to return...

Clemens

Pettite

Wandy Rodriguez

Backe

Buchholz

and their lineup would be much better...

Taveras

Biggio

Manny

Berkman

Ensberg

Wilson

Ausmus

Everett

That could put them in the World Series, I think Wandy is one of the most overlooked young players in the league. He has average 6 IP every start, has 6 wins and his ERA is below 4, slightly inflated from one bad start

this is funny. Lets deal a guy who is on the twilight of his prime, although still a very good player in his own right, for a pitcher who has 10 more years of dominance with his stuff. Hitters are easy to find, pitching is the premium these days...

I can't believe I'm going to say this but I agree with you. Top pitchers are more important than top hitters....especially in the Red Sox case because the entire team can hit.

Wandy is having a nasty year for them, and Buchholz is having a very good one to, but he's had a couple of bad starts that have inflated his era. Backe had pitched well before going on the DL.

oswalt is a guy who you can throw out there in game 7 of the world series and not have to worry. Would you feel safe with Wandy Rodriguez or Taylor Buchholz? You are crazy if you say yes....

it sure doesn't seem like Roy Oswalt has won any World Series game 7s. I sure would take a lot of guys before Oswalt, not rookies, but Oswalt is not Mr. Big Game

Yes we Red Sox fans tend to overvalue our 32-year old sure fire Hall of Fame players.

BTW Manny will make the Hall on the strength of his tangible numbers. He will not have to depend on the sentimentality of writers that use trumped up excuses like Intangibles or rings.

rings dont matter, yep, keep that thinking going. You can have more HOFers, I'll take the rings....
