http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/mlb/images/team_logos/50x50/bos.gif#19 Josh Beckett (3-1, 4.86)

http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/mlb/images/team_logos/50x50/nyy.gif #41 Randy Johnson (5-2, 5.02)

Beckett will be looking to gain his footing for the season after a few rough starts, including one against Cleveland April 27th in which he gave up a career high 9 earned runs. Beckett has had one noteable win against the New York Yankees when he pitched a complete game shutout against them at the Stadium in the 2003 World Series, when he was with the Marlins. That game clinched the Series, and two other former Marlins from that team, Alex Gonzalez and Mike Lowell, are in the Sox lineup. However, there are many new bats in the lineup that were not there during that series, notably Johnny Damon and Alex Rodriguez.

MLB.com's pitching matchup says this:

After pitching lights out baseball in his first three starts (3-0, 1.29 ERA) with the Red Sox, Beckett has fallen on hard times in his last three, going 0-1 with a 9.56 ERA.

A force against the archrivals, Johnson posted a 5-0 record with a 3.63 ERA in six starts against the Red Sox last season. In 39 2/3 innings, Boston batted just .221 against him, while fanning 44 times. He's 13-6 in 25 career games against Boston, with a 4.21 ERA. The Red Sox's 21 homers against Johnson are second only to the Angels, who have 22.

Player to watch:

Second baseman Mark Loretta is heating up, with eight hits in his last 16 at-bats.

Ill leave it to Riverside to post the matchups.

Come on boys and give me a win like last year!

Happy birthday Youk.

On a side note, we should keep track of Red Sox records during games in which a dead bird was posted in the game thread.

Good luck tonight Sox fans.

An interesting sidebar to tonight's game is that the pitching matchup is between two guys who have broke the Yankees hearts in world series play.

Anyways just a quick question....I remember last year that Nixon did not play against Johnson because of the lefty lefty matchup. If Francona does this tonight, who will be the other outfielder besides Manny and Pena?

According to the Weather Channel, there’s a 40 percent chance of showers in the New York City area tonight, which probably isn’t enough to cause the postponement of the Sox-Yankees showdown. The temperature is expected to be in the mid-50s.

As of 4:18 p.m., it wasn’t raining at Yankee Stadium.
