Francona told the ESPN guys that Crisp will not even be able to work out until at least after the 9 game roadtrip and his return thereafter is questionable as to what date. They removed the splint and had to put another one on. Sounds like the fracture was a whole lot worse than anticipated, no official word, but this is not good news for he sox....

francona said on the red sox pregame show that mid-may is when he'll likely return to the lineup

mid-may sounds likely. Then again, they are going to have to wait again, as it seems as if the break is a whole lot worse than anticipated. Seeing as he isnt being opened up, it likely isnt displaced, but he might have lightning rodded down the shaft of one of the two bones of the knuckle and that could be painful and will have the opportunity to recur, especially if he gets jammed. A broken bone heals weaker and depending on the break, the bone can remain brittle for years. Bagwell had a similar scenario when he broke his knuckle and he kept having setbacks in his recovery.....

Look, I know I'd be pretty disappointed if I read this anywhere else too, but you just love trying to make things miserable for us, don't you? You ALWAYS have to look at the cynical side of things, and observe the worst case scenario.

Ok, done. Anyway, as long as we continue like this without Crisp, I have no complaints. It's scary to think that if this success continues, how will the Sox look when we get back a healthy Crisp?

I just think they should have kept Stern.

I specialize in double talk, I have to give both sides of the prognosis, it is my job. But I think I gave a rather unbiased prognosis. I dont wish for him to be hurt, I dont wish for any player to be hurt....

Well now that he has all this time off, mabey he can work on his feet first slides!!!!:D Anyway I don't care how long it takes---------errr, well i do care but i would just rather them take all the time they need to make sure he is 100%. Better to have him on the shelf in april -june than august - october!

He was attempting to slide feet first. However, his cleats caught and caused him to got head first. Must be that "bad" infield that Renteria was talking about. :D

if he has a broken knuckle, wouldn't that prevent him from doing basic things like gripping the bat or glove?

to a degree. The biggest problem right now is that if he got jammed, he could undo the healing that has taken place. It is a place that wont heal quickly, due to repeated use and necessity in the game....
