Veterans Schilling, Moyer battle in Boston

Seattle (5-5) at Boston (6-3) 7:05 pm EDT

BOSTON (Ticker) - With 399 career wins between them, Curt Schilling of the Boston Red Sox and Jamie Moyer of the Seattle Mariners will square off Friday in the opener of a four-game series at Fenway Park.

Defying the hands of time, Schilling and Moyer have combined to go 178-99 after turning 35.

Following a season riddled with injuries and struggles, the 39-year-old Schilling (2-0, 1.93 ERA) has re-emerged as a stabilizing force at the top of Boston's rotation. With wins in his first two starts of a season for the first time since 2002, Schilling will try to break Boston's first losing streak of the campaign.

Schilling and Josh Beckett have combined to go 4-0 with a 1.61 ERA, but Boston's others three starters are 2-3 with a 9.12 ERA. David Wells and Matt Clement each allowed seven earned runs in four innings, leading to consecutive losses to Toronto on the heels of a five-game winning streak.

The 43-year-old Moyer (0-1, 4.38) will make his third start of the season for the Mariners, who are headed in the opposite direction with back-to-back wins over Cleveland after a four-game skid. Moyer received only one hit of support against Barry Zito and Oakland in his last start Sunday, taking a 3-0 loss.

In a major league career that began in 1986, Moyer has racked up 205 career wins, including seven in eight decisions as a member of the Red Sox in 1996. Moyer's new batterymate Kenji Johjima has driven in 10 runs in as many games despite hitting near the bottom of Seattle's order.

I could also keep a record of people starting gamethreads just for kicks. I know someone started to keep track last year but stopped. I could keep track of that and just keep a sidenote in my first post of a gamethread.

Everytime I went to a game I always ended up seeing Arroyo and it started to annoy me. I saw Schillings first save though. Now I don't have to worry about seeing Arroyo.

Storm system moving very slowly to the east. Could hit Boston later tonight, probably won't affect play though.

I had the sme problem, but with Clement. I still have to worry about that though.

I've had a pretty even mix too. I've seen Pedro, Wells, Clement, Lowe, Arroyo, Suppan, Wake. Frank Viola pitched the 1st game I ever saw. Those are all I can remember for now.

There chance of rain at game time is 40% going to 50% at 8 and 9. Hopefully, it holds off for a couple of innings and there is only a light drizzle afterward.

I vaguely remember you, although I remember thinking you were hilarious when you originally came here.

I came here in august and I was met by much resentment if I remember correctly.

DH's are bad news for most teams. You guys dont want that, it burns the pen, and the way Wake, Clement, and Wells have been so far, you cannot afford that.....

Wakefield's 1st start was against the Rangers, the AL team he has done worst again. How quick you forget that he bounced back to win his 2nd start.

I wasnt saying that I want a double-header, but its the only solution. The calendar shows they have 2 series this season, both of which have no off-days before or after.

Jon_Papelboner: I like yankee double headers. The yankees win both and the red sox lose their game every time in recent memory.

Actually there were 2 Sox DH's last season. A split with the Mariners, and split with the Blue Jays. So they didnt lose their game every time in recent memory.

I think he means yankee DH's that have been swept by the yankees, and the red sox lose the 1 game they play? BTW- awesome name.
