What is the deal with Manny so far this year? I understand some people start out slow, but 9 games into the season and he doesn't have a homer I don't think he has even came close to getting one. 7 for 32 with no extra base hits and 11 K's. Is Manny past his prime? Or is he still upset about being in Boston? Manny usually starts our rather quickly, but this year he has looked horrible. If he doesn't pick up the pace David Ortiz is going to get nothing to hit. Here are his numbers fromt he past Aprils. Proving my point that this is not a normal start for Manny. I know we still have half a month to go, but jeez he will really have to tear it up to get where he normally is.

2006 - .219 AVG/ .359 OBP/ .210 SLG/ .578 OPS/ 0 HR/ 2 RBI/ 7 BB/ 11 K/ 0 XBH

2005 - .274 AVG/ .386 OBP/ .607 SLG/ .993 OPS/ 7 HR/ 25 RBI/ 15 BB/ 19 K/ 13 XBH

2004 - .338 AVG/ .448 OBP/ .647 SLG/ 1.095 OPS/ 5 HR/ 16 RBI/ 10 BB/ 13 K/ 12 XBH

2003 - .347 AVG/ .430 OBP/ .551 SLG/ .981 OPS/ 4 HR/ 19 RBI/ 12 BB/ 11 K/ 12 XBH

So what's the deal, am I just not patient or is this a bad sign of things to come?

last year his stats were crappy into what June? Look at the numbers for the year, besides a slip in BA, its hard to see that as anything but a real good year.

I expect this to be his last really fine year. After that I expect 2 years at .280 .375 .545, pretty good, but not historic. I've been watching since '66 and he is the best hitter the Sox have had in that time career wise IMO. He does not have a Yaz '67 type year (including fielding and leadership) its true, but, go check the OPS+ or other saber type stats, Manny is way up there. He'll be over 150 this year as well.

One thing i think is getting ovelooked is the fact that in the last few games he has started hitting the ball very well. For example last night he drilled a pitch right at Glaus, and then the night before (i think) he took the first pitch to the track in center. He will come around, i can deal with a drop in average like last year if he puts up the power numbers like last year!

It is early, and maybe I am panicing a bit. But 9 games and no extra base hits just seems very odd for Manny. Hopefully he will break out sometime soon.

Wasn't he hitting well over .400 in spring training?

I think that at this stage in the season we have to trade manny. He is ruining everything. This is the most crucial part of the season and its mannys fault we lost the last two games. The blue jays are close to over taking the divison and in april, its crucial to hold onto our lead there. Manny has been so terrible that I think we've got to trade him. Maybe for Chris Shelton. Chris Shelton is obviously a world class slugger who has proven year in and year out that he can get it done..... kind of. Man, look at his batting average! He has 7 home runs! We have to trade Manny for this guy. Manny is done. Hes cooked, fried, gone. He will never hit another extra base hit in the big leagues again. Trade him before its too late! Throw lester in the deal and bring Shelton to Boston!

Hes on the decline. It's what happens when players get older and dont take roids.

Alot of you are saying that if Manny's bat is our biggest problem we will win the division. So let me throw a what if at you, and im not saying this will happen just what if.

What if Manny continues to struggle.....and teams stop pitching to David Ortiz, mainly late in games. Because really, why would you pitch to the best clutch hitter in the game when Manny is hitting .250? Do you really think that equals us winning the division? Im not saying Manny won't turn it on, because I think he will eventually. But if he doesn't it could be a big problem. And I know it's early.

Manny will hit. When the season is over look at the numbers and he will be right there with the elite players. There's no question that he will hit. The only thing that can stop him from hitting is injury. Knock on wood.
