It was mentioned in the Ortiz thread but I guess this warrants its own one too. Good news! $12 mil a season is a price I'm happy to pay.

Please forgive my ignorance---but is this extension take over this year? Or are we paying him his same pay this year and then next year it kicks in?

The extension erases the 2007 option they held on him. $12..5 million per season from 2007 - 2010. A 5th season option for 2011 is also rightfully written into there

It's great to keep Big Papi, but by wiping out the option for 2007, they are essentially extending him for 3 years at almost 14 million per year. because the 2007 option was valued at 8.4 million. $14 million/year is full FMV.

He did specifically ask for a new deal.

It'll help his morale since he wanted a new one, so since its not my money, GREAT DEAL!!!

And since he is Big Papi GREAT FRIGGIN DEAL!!!

Not to hi-jack this thread, but did anyone listen to his press conference on MLB.com? You can hear that creaking door sound from AIM during the press conference.

After reading the press conference highlights, Papi is THE MAN. Fenway is his house, and he wants to protect it (his words, more or less). Out of anyone in baseball, this is the man I'd want protecting my house, that's for sure.

Yeah, I kept thinking my AIM was on  God I suck. I must have stopped the broadcast like 3 times to check my PM.

Papi has such a hard time with English, but he muscles through it. I totally respect that. Needless to say I'm happy about him staying. Obviously he's already earned his place in Red Sox history as a hero and one for the ages after 04 - yes, up there with Ted.

I saw it and I'm honored.

I wish I knew what he said in Spanish so I could understand. He seemed much more comfortable speaking his language.

He also said during the press conference that he told the new guys (Lowell, Loretta, Crisp, etc) that they may need a diaper for their first game at Fenway.

Hilarious.

Ortiz can protect my house anyday.
