I hoped they would get this done this offseason, but they still have an option to pick up and next offseason to negotiate an extension. I'll reiterate what I've said all along. They should have the extension void the option and give Ortiz a big raise for '07 while locking him up for '08-'10. He's earned it, and he's the public face of the franchise. It's good PR for both the fans and other players in the league.

Current negotiations or not, I am confident that David Ortiz will be on the Red Sox for at least the remainder of the decade.

Theo did only craft a team that made the playoffs 3 straight yrs and won the WS for the first time in four score and six years. Have faith in the guy in that he will put a competitive team on the field, but do not make it look as if he is loyal, because he is not. The only thing I can think of is that Theo may be balking at giving a fat man a long term deal. Ortiz body can only last so long at that weight...

In case you haven't noticed he's a DH! I don't think his body weight will affect their decision.

DH's dont hurt their back? Their knees dont go out on them just because they are a DH? Mo Vaughn was a DH in the latter part of his career and he broke down. Terrible argument on your part.....

Mo Vaugh's demise started with him f***ing his ankle up while trying to field a foul-pop near the dugout. Terrible comparison on you part.....

His career ended because his knees were so arthritic that they nearly fused. His ankle cost him a yr, his weight cost him his career. Guys that big get accelerated arthritis formation causing them to have degenerative back and knee changes much more regularly than a skinny person. Just because he is a DH doesnt exempt him from that. It may slow the process a little because he is off his feet for half a game, but it doesnt mean he is immune. Remember, arthritis is not baseball unique, he is developing it just by walking around. I think anyone with a good pair of eyes can see that he is overweight and that is the biggest precursor of severe degenerative arthritis in the weight bearing joints....

And that happened from the play in Anaheim. Do you even know what you are talking about.

All true, but Ortiz isn't anywhere near Vaugh's girth the last two years of his career. Sure, Ortiz is no svelte guy, but he isn't this big.

Mo was 34 and 35 when he played for the Mets. Ortiz is 30 this year, and if they extend him, it would be for his 31-34 age years. Provided he maintains his current size, I don't see this a big issue of concern, especially since he won't be adding stress to his knees by playing the field. Besides, even if he does experience similar problems, it will be worth a .260/.340/.450 with 26 homer line (Mo's age 34 year line) that last year to get what he's doing now for a few more years.

I don't even know where to start. Mo was much bigger than Ortiz to begin with. He also played every day. Now even if we accept your argument, Ortiz will be near 40 by time he has problems, and the sox extending him how for 5 years or so doesn't change that. I know you want the yanks to sign him and all--but come on!

Man you are thick. Can I jump on the ban jsinger bandwagon?? Just kidding. He tore ligaments in his ANKLE when he fell. His knee was uninjured on that play. He developed arthritis from being a fat ass and getting bigger as he aged....

They're playing weight is the same, 230 lbs.

Ortiz has 3 inches on vaughn though

That was Vaughn's listed weight, and it was most likely his Rookie weight. He was playing at 260-270 towards the end.

there is no way ortiz is 230, no way. Mo was close to 280, Ortiz is probably 260...

There is no way Ortiz is 230. I weigh 230. Ortiz is not me.

I don't think Ortiz weighs 230 either. He carries his weight well, but I'd say it's closer to 250-260.
