Not a good outing by Papelbon. 5 hits in 1 1/3 inning. That's ugly. I expected Wells to get spanked. He has not had enough work. Hopefully, he'll stay behind and pitch to some minor leaguers during the first two weeks. If he sits on his ass, he'll give a performance like this when he comes back.

He will stay behind since his first start is coming on April 12. As for Papelbon, he didnt even get time in the bullpen to get ready. Tavarez was ejected, then Papelbon threw some practic pitches to Huckaby. Its nothing to get worried about.

EDIT: Does this mean a spot is opened up for Hansen? Tavarez will most likely get a harsh penalty for his part in today's fight

So, Papelbon wasn't warmed up when he came in? If Tavarez gets suspended, they can probably carry Hansen.

Any predictions how long it will take Francona to pull the plug on Wells if he struggles during the begining of the season? I say if the first 3 starts he gets racked and Papelbon is promoted to the rotation where he belongs

final stats for today's walkoff crazy win against the D-Rays 11-12. The Sox won their 2nd straight game, making their record at 8-16-1

Wells was touched up to say the least, giving up 7 Runs in 4 innings. Fingers crossed for his first start of the season, against the Blue Jays. Best pitching went to Foulkie, 3 straight scoreless innings now. Keep it up Foulke. Tavarez was hampered by shoddy defensive plays and the fight with Joey Gathright. Papelbon, not fully warmed up, came aboard after the ejection of Tavarez. Papelbon gave up 5 hits in 1.1 inning.

Offense (the expected opening day lineup): Coco continues to trump the naysayers "oh he cant hit leadoff, look at the stats!!" He went 1 for 2 with a walk & 7th stolen base of the spring. Mark Loretta followed suit going 3 for 4 with a walk, SB of his own (got on base first 4 ABs). Ortiz, Manny, Tek, & Nixon all chipped in for this slug fest. Hee-Seop Choi walked with the bases loaded in the 9th for the walkoff win.

Coco Crisp- 1 for 2, Walk, RBI, SB, K (.463 avg)

Willie Harris- 2 for 2 (.189 avg)

Mark Loretta- 3 for 4, Double, RBI, SB, K (.429 avg)

Adam Stern- 1 for 1 (.387 avg)

David Ortiz- 1 for 3, RBI (.400 avg)

Enrique Wilson- 0 for 2, RBI, Walk (.250 avg)

Manny Ramirez- 2 for 4, 2 RBIs, K (.361 avg)

Trent Durrington- 0 for 1, Walk, K (.174 avg)

Jason Varitek- 1 for 3, 2 RBIs (.182 avg)

Hee-Seop Choi- Walk, RBI (.100 avg)

Mike Lowell- 0 for 2, 2 Walks (.256 avg)

De Renne- Walk

Trot Nixon- 1 for 3, 2 RBIs (.295 avg)

Wily Mo Pena- 0 for 2, 2 Ks (.312 avg)

J.T. Snow- 1 for 3, RBI (.290 avg)

Ken Huckaby- Walk (.222 avg)

Alex Gonzalez- 1 for 4 (.132 avg)

Zachary Borowiak- 0 for 1, K

Lets just remember that this is nothing new from Tavarez, but I can understand his agression after being spiked in the leg.

Its not something that I condone, but its what sometimes happens in baseball. Not just the Red Sox though it seems they like to make the headlines even now. Eh at least I know the Sox have more of an intimidating staff than last season haha

I can see Tavarez getting a number of games for this; so that MLB can show everyone that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated. I gotta check around tonight and see if i can get some film of the incident!

This is weird, i can't find the highlights anywhere! Sportsdesk shows footage of the whole game up until that point and then just still shots--what gives? I wonder if MLB stepped in and won't let the clips be shown, like if a moron goes running accross the field during the game!

Anyone know where this clip could be online becuase i can't find it anywhere. Really interested in what really happened. From the Tavarez interview, he said that he stepped on his leg by accident and was trying to move it off when Gathright pushed his leg and jumped up------Tav thought he was going to come at him so he landed the "pre-emptive" blow!

spring training update, tonight's matchup against the Reds. Through the 4th inning, the Sox lead 2-1, helped by solo HRs by Manny (3) and Cora (2). Clement is still going strong this spring. In 3 innings he has allowed 1 run on just 2 hits

today's stats of the Sox's 3-2 win over Pittsburgh

Schilling was more or less solid in his final spring training outing before his first start, giving up 2 runs on 6 hits in 4 innings of work. Foulke followed that up with another clean outing allowing just 1 hit. Rudy Seanez under the radar has now throwing his 4th straight scoreless inning.

Leading the offense was Trot Nixon who had gone 1 for 4, a 2 run single with the bases loaded in the 7th inning had given them the lead for good. Wily Mo Pena is alo not slowing down as he went 2 for 3. His big hit being an RBI double. Here's hoping he can continue this hitting & plate patience into the regular season

Trot Nixon- 1 for 4, 2 RBIs (.292 avg)

Mark Loretta- 0 for 3 (.400 avg)

Trent Durrington- 0 for 1 (.154 avg)

David Ortiz- 1 for 3, Double (.400 avg)

Dustan Mohr- 1 for 1 (.361 avg)

Manny Ramirez- 0 for 3 (.341 avg)

Corsaletti- 0 for 1

Jason Varitek- 0 for 2, Walk (.154 avg)

Ken Huckaby- Walk (.222 avg)

Mike Lowell- 1 for 2, Walk (.267 avg)

Adam Stern- 0 for 1 (.364 avg)

Wily Mo Pena- 2 for 3, Double, RBI (.364 avg)

Willie Harris- 0 for 1 (.184 avg)

J.T. Snow- 0 for 2, Walk (.273 avg)

Alex Gonzalez- 0 for 3 (.122 avg)

Alright, Papelbon strikes out the side in the 7th

Yes Arroyo is doing a commendable job. Though interested to see if he could do the same against Boston in the regular season (whenever that will be), plus having Ortiz & Varitek in the lineup (both out today). Also Manny not staying in there for just 4 innings

----------------------------

today's stats from the Reds shutout of the Sox 4-0. Their 2nd straight loss, spring record is now 8-19-1.

Wakefield with his last start of the spring closed out as the Sox's best starting pitcher in the grapefruit league games. He pitched 4 solid innings allowing 1 run on just 2 hits while striking out 3. Timlin, Tavarez, and Papelbon followed with 3 shutout innings. Tavarez did have location issues as he did load the bases. Papelbon was effective striking out the side. DelCarmen's struggle issues had continued today.

Offense... there was no offense. The Sox could only muster 3 singles (Crisp, Lowell, Youkilis)

Coco Crisp- 1 for 3 (.449 avg)

Willie Harris- Walk (.184 avg)

Mark Loretta- 0 for 3 (.375 avg)

Enrique Wilson- 0 for 1 (.270 avg)

Trot Nixon- 0 for 3 (.275 avg)

Adam Stern- 0 for 1 (.353 avg)

Manny Ramirez- 0 for 2 (.326 avg)

Dustan Mohr- 0 for 1 (.351 avg)

Mike Lowell- 1 for 2 (.277 avg)

Kevin Youkilis- 1 for 3 (.222 avg)

Wily Mo Pena- 0 for 3 (.320 avg)

Josh Bard- 0 for 3 (.226 avg)

Alex Gonzalez- 0 for 2 (.116 avg)

Alex Cora- 0 for 1 (.217 avg)

Tim Wakefield (L, 1-2)- 4 innings, 2 Hits, 1 Run, Walk, 3 Ks, 2.50 ERA

Mike Timlin- 1 inning, 1 Hit, 6.75 ERA

Julian Tavarez- 1 inning, 2 Hits, Walk, 0.00 ERA

Jonathan Papelbon- 1 inning, 1 Hit, 3 Ks5.31 ERA

Manny Delcarmen- 1 inning, 2 Hits, 3 Runs, 2 Walks, K, 4.97 ERA

Searles- 1 inning, K, 0.00 ERA

Red Sox closer Keith Foulke was scheduled to pitch on Thursday, but was scratched. The reason?

"Foulke had an intestinal problem, he didn't feel good," said Francona. "He'll pitch Saturday."

Good. Nothing a little Imodium won't cure. Better than hearing a report that his arm was stiff.
