Did you see him let up Pokey's inside the park homerun in 2004 while playing right field. You will find your answer right there. He has no range left. He is a DH when healthy and we don't need a backup DH to sit on the bench.

You know I don't speak Spanish, in English please. What? You pooped in the refrigerator and you ate a whole wheel of cheese. I'm not even mad. That's amazing.

Gonzalez is a bum now and I hope he gets hurt while playing in Pawtucket. He really has no use anymore as he has not done anything in 2 seasons

You hope another human being gets hurt just because you don't want him on the team? Wow, I lost respect for you on that one Jsinger ....

Then according to you the yanks should let Melky Cabrera go also ... lol

You heard here first! Juan Gonzalez signed a minor league deal with the Boston Red Sox! Now, I demand an apology from Jsinger among others because when I said that Boston should sign Juan alot of you called me an idiot & said that there's no way Theo signs him ... Call me a visionary ppl! :harhar:

( It's in Spanish BTW )

You are a visionary. Let's hope that he has something left. I like this risk better than trading a starter like Clement for Craig Wilson-- that IMO would be a rip-off.

Perish the thought of opening up a spot in the rotation for Papelbon

Other than that, yes I would take Craig Wilson over Gonzalez. He's got more to give in his career than Juan who is on the brink of retirement. He's much more versatile than Juan, who has only played right in his whole career. Craig meanwhile can play right, left, center, 1st base, and can catch if need be.

Didn't you once lecture me that you never root against any of our guys in camp when I expressed my opinion that I wanted ex-yankee, ex-Devil Ray Flaherty to flop? What do you have against Juan Gone? That he is old? He has never played for the Yankees, and he used to be pretty good. If he can revive his career in Fenway, I would welcome it.

A spot will open for him one way or another. With the age in our rotation, someone is bound to go down. Arroyo has already taken himself out of the picture. Plus, they can't commit a rotation spot to Papelbon until they see how Foulke, Seanez, and Tavarez perform in the pen. There is absolutely no reason to force him into the rotation in April, when he would probably get very inconsistent work.

I don't think it has anything to do with whether he's played for the Yankees or not, it's just that the majority of the people here think that his best years are behind him and that it would be a waste of a roster spot either here or in Pawtucket. I mean if a MLB team thought that he could make a valuable contribution don't you think they wouldn't hae waited until March 19 to sign him. No one has signed him yet and I think the Globe or the Herald would have a better scoop on the story than some Spanish newspaper.

Sorry if Im not going to be hoping that Schilling, Wakefield or Wells goes down just so Papelbon can get a rotation spot

You make it sound like him being in the opening day rotation is a bad thing. What would be inconsistent is give him up to 5 innings at most per week. So he's now insurance for Foulke, Seanez, Riske & Tavarez? Thats an upgrade over insurance for Foulke.

Regardless of opinions about Juan Gone's remaining ability, 700 makes a good point about Jsinger being hypocritical. Personally, I don't think he has much left in tank in terms of fielding range or the ability to stay healthy, but that isn't going to stop me from hoping he can still mash.

EDIT: Assuming this signing is legit.

haha, i used freetranslation.com to translate the article into English and what it spit out was quite funny.

FINALLY THE toletero Juan 'Igor' Gonz?lez obtained the opportunity that so much was expecting.

The strong one jonronero vegabaje?o received yesterday an invitation al training camp of the Red Averages of Boston, confirmed its agent Alan Nero.

“Some moments ago we arrive at a verbal agreement with the Red Averages and Juan will be reported al training camp in Fort Myers Monday (ma?ana)”, said Nero, regular agent of the firm MCSG Sports, in telephone interview with The New Day.

Nero explained that its client will be going to treat to be gained a space in the roster of the Red Averages.

“Is a contract of smaller league. Juan only is going to have 10 days before beginning the season to try to do the team, for which a high possibility exists that after comience the season remain in the training camp extended or go to Triple TO (Pawtucket) a time in which the team understands that is ready for play in the Large Leagues. But Juan has worked very hard and he is in a great condition”, he said Nero.

“Juan will have the opportunity to gain to $1,000,000. All depends on as much as time be in the Large Leagues ”, added.

Gonz?lez, maximum jonronero puerto rican in the Greater and ninth among the active players with 434 bambinazos, has been lost for diverse wounds the trifle of 462 parties in the past four seasons. Last year, a tear in the 'hamstring' limited its action to only a shift al bat with the Guardians of Cleveland.

“This is a good opportunity for Juan. What has to test he is that he is healthy. Ten days can be very little time to seek to be gained a space, but him do not we want to put pressure. Therefore is that the possibility exists that can be a time in smaller league”, maintained Nero.

Gonz?lez, of 36 years, has been coaching during several weeks in the municipal park of Toa Low.

There it was evaluated last month by the Cubs of Chicago and this week by personnel of the Guards of Texas and the Red Averages.

The Red Averages count in the left forest with the stellar one Manny Ram?rez, who during them you passed years has had a stormy relation with the management of the team and has requested a change in several occasions. The right gardener is Trot Nixon, a productive player but prone to wounds.

With the team also they are seeking a space the veteran gardeners Ron Callaway and Gabe Kapler.

The batter appointed is David Ortiz, one of the players franchise of the Red Averages.

Gonz?lez was a leader in home runs in the American League in the seasons 1992 and 1993 and More Valuable Player of that circuit in the campaigns 1996 and 1998, Latin-American only player in achieving it.

I think Papelbon might be best served starting the year in Pawtuckett. He's only had one really good outing in ST, and it was against the Marlins, a minor league club itself. He needs to hone those secondary pitches, and if he's doing it in the bigs while watching some of his FBs launched into orbit, it may mess with his head. Rest assured, someone in the rotation or bullpen will suck or be injured, so he won't be in AAA all year.

On topic, Juan Gone, huh? Meh. If he can still mash and find a way to stay off the DL, then he isn't a horrible option to platoon with Trot.

Go Red Averages!

no. Dont you think if Gonzalez is now guaranteed a spot with the Red Sox, that it wouldve been reported on ESPN, NESN, Foxsports, mlb.com, boston.com, boston herald

The list goes on

Nobody said he was guaranteed a spot on the team. However, he is under contract with the team.

I agree on the healthy part but who said that Juan can't field anymore?

Clay, he cant field anymore.

freetranslation is a pretty bad site. Not very good translations.

Now for my opinion on this signing.

..I think it's a good one. The guy could mash them in his day, and if somebody goes down it wouldnt hurt to bring him up to Boston for a little to see if he can help out for a little while while the other guys is down. In fact, I wanted the Yankees to sign him. We shall wait and see though.

If Im correct in understanding, it mentions Ron Calloway with Gabe Kapler as a backup outfielder. Not sure where they got their information, but Calloway doesnt have a shot of making the big league team. At best they could offer him a minor league deal.

Yeah exactly. I just e-mailed the story to Gordon Edes about an hour ago seeing if he knew anything about Gonzalez. I'm hoping to get a response to either deny it or either have my name mentioned in his blog if it is accurate. ;)

I disagree, Papelbon proved last year he can win starting and relieving, he is ML ready, if he needed to hone anything that was a bg issue he'd be in MiL camp and not here. Also you cannot judge a player from how he performs in ST, who knows maybe Arroyo will be nails in the pen. His and other pitcher's FBs are getting launched because they are using that more and working on it's command, velocity, etc. just like Beckett.

its on rotoworld now

According to El Nuevo Dia, Juan Gonzalez will report to Red Sox camp on Monday to compete for a job as a reserve. His agent reportedly confirmed the deal, saying Gonzalez would have the opportunity to make $1 million. Dustan Mohr has played very well this spring, so Gonzalez will have an uphill battle to win a spot as Trot Nixon's platoon player in right field.
