the world has just caught up in basketball though

I wouldn't say so. If the US sent their absolute best players, the world wouldn't have much of a chance, again. The last US team didn't bring any shooters, had the least amount of practice time a US olympic basketball team has ever had, and didn't bring their best players. Kobe, T-Mac, Shaq, etc.

If I'm them, I'm feeling extremely confident with Vokoun in net. He goaltended their team to a win in the World Championships, didn't he?

As for the US game... this team doesn't have a prayer at medalling.

I hope to god they do medal. Not for the usual patriotic reasons, although I do want them to medal, but for entirely selfish reasons. If they don't medal, then Jeremy Roenick won't shut up about how he wasn't on the team. If they win something, maybe it will keep him from running his cock-pocket.

Amen. Hopefully this first game was due to a majority (I believe) of the team showing up kind of late to Torino. Though, I'm not holding out too much hope for this team.

What the hell is Brian Hayward doing in the Olympics? s***** color commentator. Nothing but biased opinions. God, I hate that prick.

Oh, go USA!

The US vs. Sweden women's hockey game is going to a shoot-out to determine who goes to the gold medal game.

EDIT: Sweden wins it. They did a good job blocking shots earlier in the game, and the US team didn't adjust by making shot fakes until too late in the game. Plus, their goaltender was standing on her head today, 37 SV on 39 SOG and no goals in the shoot-out. Although, the US shoot-out chances were pretty weak attempts.

Wow that is a shocker. I still can't believe that Sweden beat the U.S. So now it's either Canada or Finland vs Sweden for women's hockey Gold.

The NHL will review several factors ??” including the risk of injury ??” before deciding if it will commit to sending players to the Olympics past the 2010 Games in Vancouver.

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said Friday that the length of the break needed to accommodate the Olympics will also be considered. The NHL agreed to shut down for these Olympics and Vancouver as part of the labor agreement reached with the players union last summer.

???There are a number of factors ??” how long of a break, and whether that break is beneficial to the season we??™re trying to have in North America,??? Daly said. ???Injuries are also an issue and a concern of our clubs and our players.???

I think this would cease to be such a problem if they pared the season down to say 70 games, as they should.

Think about these guys this year who are in the Olympics:

82 Regular Season Games (compressed)

6 or so Olympic Games (compressed)

28 Potential Playoff Games (very compressed)

That's potentially 116 games to be played over a 8 or 9 month period. Waaaay too much IMO.

I'm also for shaving the 1st round down to 5 games.

Anyone else here about the US Snowboarder who lost the gold because she was taunting and crashed?

I heard about it this afternoon haven't seen clips of it but it really sounds boneheaded. Just another bad day for the Americans.

Yeah...I just saw that... Lindsay Jacobellis..she was 140 ft ahead ready to take the gold, and tried to do a lein air on the second to last jump, fell, and lost the gold. USA would have taken the gold in every snowboarding event if she wasn't trying to be a show off.

Canada just had one taken away. It was an amazing save, but Gerber caught it with the glove inside the net. The replays pretty much show his gove behind the post. By rule, it should have been a goal, but that was one hell of a save.

Canada goes down 2-0 to Switzerland. Amazing performance by Swiss goalie Martin Gerber. The Canadians outshot the Swiss 26-1 in the 3rd period alone but got nothing past Gerber. They also had 2 goals disallowed. The 2nd of which I thought should have counted.

Yeah, Gerber was unreal. I thought the 2nd one was in too, but Gerber made a great play on it; I think that may have influenced the ref's decision. It's hard to let one go against the 'tender when he makes a play like that.

I just don't see how that couldn't have been a goal. That one angle they showed the glove was clearly behind the net, and the other ones they showed it wasn't clear whether it was over the line or not, so I would think you would of had to go with the one clear shot that they had. Regardless of that Canada should have won this game in the 3rd Period when you outshoot a team by that margin and dominate play like they did there is no excuse for not scoring. I think they could have had a few more quality scoring chances as a lot of the saves by Gerber were just shots from the blue line which he could save easily. But I give Gerber a lot of credit because even when the Canadians tried to put a lot of guys in front of him to stop him from seeing the puck he still wouldn't budge and made some great saves.
