One of the main reasons a college player is a better pick is that they have matured mentally and have almost reached the physical stature they would be playing at in the majors. Plus they will have established a baseline of success that can be evaluated and even projected. The wait to see them in action is shorter and they have a better chance of staying because they are not spending 8-10 years in the minor leagues.

BTW, we are not upset you have Damon because you will be getting him in his declining years. He will have so many outside distractions (along with his wife) that his overall production will suffer. Our loss will be your loss.

Leaving Fenway will have an affect too. Look at his career numbers at Fenway vs. all other parks:

Fenway: .311/.387/.438/.825

All other parks: .284/.344/.430/.774

And enjoy Farnsworth and his wonderful, fiery personality. He's bound to start a couple fights, and is probably a clubhouse cancer. Take it from someone who lives in Michigan and saw him in Detroit part of last year (wonder why the Tigers were so quick to dump him?)

I was under the impression that the Tigers traded Farnsworth because he was valuable trade bait, and they were terrible, so a quality closer wasn't much good to them. Good thing I the inside dope that he's a clubhouse cancer from a guy who lives in the same state that houses the team he pitched for for a piece of last season. While we're on the subject, take it from me, someone who just moved out of Massachusetts: David Ortiz is a child molester. :harhar:

Color me unimpressed with giving up any picks for Farnsworth. His K/9, BB/9, H/9 and WHIP are very similar to Seanez's, but Rudy gives up the long ball to a tune of .44 less per 9 innings. Sure, Farnsworth is younger, but Rudy came for less money and a shorter contract meaning the team that signed him isn't stuck paying him $5.67M for the next three years if he can't hack it in the AL east, and he didn't cost any picks. The Damon signing was a good one for the Yankees. They have next to nothing in the cupboard so trading for a CF would have totally depleted it, whereas the Sox farm is fairly well stocked so giving up some prospects for Crisp doesn't hurt as much. Plus, when Damon's fielding goes into decline at the end of his contract, and that is very likely to happen, he can be moved into the expansive LF at Yankee stadium. The opposite is true of Fenway, and Damon doesn't have enough arm to man RF or enough stick to justify playing LF in Fenway.

Seanez also pitched his career high of 60.3 innings last year. He's never had even 60 appearances in a season. He's not durable enough to be a primary set-up man. I'm not ecstatic about Farnsworth, but he was a better option than anyone else that was still an option at that point.

I was just saying that not because I personally know him, but that living in Michigan means that I get more Tigers news that someone that lives in Massachusetts. We really don't need dickheads like you on this site, so either take what someone says with some consideration and respect or shut up.

Man, I thought that one was pretty funny, too.

What Tigers news that you received virtue of your Michigan residence indicates that Kyle Farnsworth is a clubhouse cancer?

And EVERYBODY needs dickheads.

rudy has been training with martial arts and it has helped him "get in the best shape of his life" so don't think we rolled the dice again w/o reason. he'll be a solid performer.

Bill Simmons did not invent that phrase. It just seems like he did, because along with "Why isn't this happening?" and "I should run a television network," its one of the the only three he knows.

I am still finding it interesting how many people will cling to a philosophy just because their team employs it. Sh*t if the sox start drafting high schoolers then all of a sudden college picks are a JOKE!!!!!

I am absolutely not picking sides. The sox did what they needed to do and ended up restocking their cupboards rather well. The yankees went the long way and have done a good job to this point, but their rookies are not as ready as the sox are.

I wont take sides on it, because it all depends on your team's makeup. The sox crave "flexibility" now and that flexibility is best manifested if they have multiple options at multiple positions. For the yankees, they have a ton of players locked up long term, so having a ton of rookies be ready at once would be a detriment to the players. Think about it, the sox need people ready for 2007 because Nixon will be gone, Lowell might be bought out, Loretta may be gone, youk may fizzle out, AGon will be gone, Schilling may be gone, Foulke will be gone, etc...get my point? They have multiple needs for the coming years (espdue to their philosophy of not giving out long term deals past 4 yrs) and having multiple prospects ready to at least be given a shot is a boon for them. For the yankees, 1b, 2b, ss, 3b, cf, lf are long term projects C will be there another 2 yrs. The starting five will have one opening after 2006 and one opening after 2007 and one opening after 2008 as currently constructed. See what I mean for the yankees? Not as many holes will be opening up and in the spots where the holes are opening, superstar players might be available.

Overall, to build depth you draft from the college level. This is due to the fact that as a whole, college players make the MLB more than high schoolers, but the highest profile players in the game were for the most part taken directly out of high school. For the sox, they will need depth and the star factor may not be as important as a consistent and deep team. For the yankees, one or two holes will open every yr and having one guy each year be ready and be ready to step it up big is important. It is not just a philosophy in the farm, it is directly linked to the MLB policy. Plus, the ETAs of many of the high end but low level prospects are after most of the long term all stars have moved on.

So in effect, the yankees are stocking for the distant future, the red sox are ready for the near future and both MO's seem to fit each team...

Wonder why the Tigers were so quick to dump him?

um...A) He was going to be a free agent and they knew he wouldnt be coming back. B) They wanted to get something in return (Colon) for him rather than let him walk for nothing. C) Dump his salary (whatever it was last year) in favor of a 300k salary.

Those are the reasons.

Now I am not saying that everything you said isnt true, but let's be serious, the Tigers probably would have been happy to keep him.

Farnsworth still has to work out his "bright lights" issue. That being he seems to fold up in high pressured game such as his appearances in the playoffs. Moving to Yankee Stadium can only raise concerns about that. Just my opinion. :dunno:
