Are you serious? Do you really think Lowell will be as bad as last year, especially switching to a hitter's park? Do you REALLY think we're going to suffer the loss of Damon when we've added a younger, faster, and arguably BETTER center fielder in Coco Crisp? Oh, and Crisp can reach the infield with his throws, too. That's always nice to have.

We've upgraded at first. We've upgraded the rotation and the bullpen. We might have even upgraded in center, like it or not. We've upgraded at second, and it's going to be pretty hard not to upgrade at short. And there's a decent chance we've upgraded at third, so just stop.

And Mr. Psychic, please tell us how you know that Lowell will be up in clutch time, and that Bernie and Posada won't...

some of you guys are comical.

So every single guy in the lineup will exceed last yrs pathetic seasons?

What is the chance that your 3b, ss, and 2b all rebound from career low seasons at once?

What is the chance that the "Greek God of Walks" will not be one of the worst all around 1b in the game? I mean seriously, some on here are taking Gammons crap straight to the brain.

Getting Lowell was a good idea? When is it a good idea to land a guy who is owed 19 mil over the next 2 yrs and had an OPS below .700 at a corner IF position?

Loretta is 35 and had a serious injury last yr, and upon returning was a shell of himself?

uh, um, er riv!!! we won 95 games last year....they only reason you got the flag was because of one more win....what was that about last years pathetic seasons??? bottom line is that we have flat out improved in all areas and you know it...were gonna get a good hard look of things to come in just about a couple of weeks or so...man oh man a shevitz what are you gonna do if your 1-5 loaded supahstahs go in the toilet like they did last year for how many games??? are you already assuming that giambi is gonna repeat his season just like that?? you got two big things to think about........if big schill returns to his form of 04 and foulkey does as well, you better not be counting your pennant until it hatches..

wonder where hawk and BB are??? on second thought, who cares where hawk and BB are.

MJ- want to make a bet on which team scores more runs this year?

Lets look at some numbers for this years crop of superstars

Posada 34/35 yrs old 99-03 AVG- .273 04-05 .267

Giambi 35 yrs old 99-03 AVG .311 04-05 .248

B Will 37/38 yrs old 99-03 AVG .313 04-05 .255

Sheffield 37 yrs old 99-03 AVG .317 04-05 .290

Jeter 31/32 yrs old 99-03 AVG .324 04-05 .301

Boy, like a good wine, these guys keep getting better with age. I wonder how much more of a decline we will see in their stats THIS year!!!!

Listen, nowhere in his bio of his minor league campaigns or whatever does he predict out to be a first baseman. He never had power. He only hit for average for a little while, but he has always been an OBP machine. Thats the type of production that you would love out of a 3b or a middle infielder, not your 1b. Your 1b is supposed to be one of the best hitters and your is one of the weakest....

No matter how little power Youk hits for, how can he be worse than Millar last year? What did he have, like 6 or 7 homers all year?

Looks like we inheritted a Rosenthal groupie with the rest of the BH members. Looking at career stats, that's right career stats - they are a better predictor of future performance for established players than last year's stats are (especially if last year's are abnormally high or low) , and comparing them to what the Sox got out of each position where a change occured, and you can see why many expect this team's offense to be very productive.

1B: 2005 OPS - .795, Youk OPS - .787

2B: 2005 OPS - .729, Loretta OPS - .773

SS: 2005 OPS - .708, Gonzalez OPS - .682

3B: 2005 OPS - .802, Lowell OPS - .800

CF: 2005 OPS - .813, Crisp OPS - .756

At face value that looks like a slight decline. A big drop from CF is negated by a big upgrade at 2B. 1B and 3B are a wash, so the .026 OPS points lost at SS are what make it a net loss. However, that doesn't take into account two very important things. One is that Crisp and Youkilis are both still working toward their peak. OPS trends for both of them are still on the way up. Last year alone Crisp's was .810, and Youk's was .805. Two is the park where they will be playing home games now. Crisp put up an .888 OPS on the road last year (Jacobs Field is a pitcher's park). Lowell and Gonzalez both have good power and a tendancy to pull the ball, which is good for RHHs at Fenway.

Tell Ken we all said, "Hi".

so my former jarhead friend, what exactly is a Rosenthal groupie?

just curious!

I'm confused as to who he's even talking to Hammer....

I think that since you posted the stats, he must mean you...I'd just like to know what he meant by a rosenthal groupie...he can't be a bad kid PC, he used to be marine..

I guess it would be me- except i didn't post stats for a year- i posted them for the last 2 years versus the previous 5 before that. The reason wasn't to get an overall average of a player's career, but to show the major decline in averages of some of the older yankee folk, which I would surmise is due to age.

I didn't mention a thing about OPS, or the red sox for that matter. I was just shutting MJ up.

Speaking of Marines Hammer, my PFT allowed me to bump up a class, so I'm shooting for June now rather than October. It didn't please the parents and girl too much, but I was a happy boy.

Ken Rosenthal is a Yankee loving hack that works for Sports Illustrated. Sorry for the confusion; I should have quoted the Rivernator, since he was who I was respoding to.

EDIT: RS got it right, he works for FoxSports

I had a feeling that it might be directed at our good friend MJ.

He basically takes rotoworld, TWIB, Peter Gammons, the New York Daily, rolls them into one giant thought blob, and then ejaculates them out for us all to see why Elton John keeps wearing Rose colored glasses.

They sure do make the view pretty.

we are getting crisp for his best years. he turns 27 in November and should be able to go full throttle for the next 6-8 years, most of them if not of them with us. he's gotten better each year that he has played - his ops went from .655 to .810 in just three seasons. hr had 42 doubles last year in 145 games.

Oh, and BTW, he hit.390 with a .976 ops against the yankmees.

gotta make a short timers calender til ST.........

and for cripes sake Col, will ya change your profile...you ain't old!! a little valve job and a new set of headers and your as good as new!!;) ......how's the hotrod running?

hammer,

love to wrap my hand around a cyclic and then pull some pitch. glad when the SB is over so we can get on to ST. lots of interesting things happening, almost all of them good.

*Quick reminder of the PM option* Ok. Done.

Anyway, I don't know much about Riske. I'm assuming he's young and pretty good arm. Does he upgrade our bullpen as much as people are saying he does?

can't hurt! from what I've heard, he's struck out 48 in 72 innings. is very deceptive with hiding the ball..has been known to leave a hanger out there alittle too long,,,oh not another embree please...he may prove to be a pretty good setup guy...will have to see what dave wallace can do with em....

now since my friend the col brought up wrapping his hand around a cyclic and pulling some pitch...I just wanted to remind him of just a couple of things:

1. The engine RPM and the rotor RPM, must BOTH be kept in the GREEN! Failure to heed this commandment can affect the morale of the crew!

2. The BSR (Bang Stare Read) theory states that louder the sudden bang in the helicopter, the quicker your eyes will be drawn to the gauges.

3.The longer you stare at those gauges, the less time it takes them to move from green to red...

and finally, to me at least..........happiness is a belt fed weapon!

Hammer out!;)

He should do at least a decent job. And anything to improve the bullpen over last season will work. Now, who are the setup guys now? Timlin and Taverez? Is Riske middle relief?
