Okay 2004, horrendous 2005. He is a 4th OFer at best who is a better option than Stern in center, but will likely be a platoon player with trot in RF until Gabe returns....

Stats?

sorry man, look em up on espn, he was .274 with a good OPS in 2004 and under .200 in 2005 in colorado. Gotta go to bed, surgery is killin me....

he is a MUCH better hitter against lefties. Id be fine with him as a 4th OF to play RF against lefties. He also has a pretty good arm.

career .252 avg and .327 obp isnt bad for a 4th OF. He also has 15 hr potential and hit 17 last year in 265 AB's. (granted he did play for the rockies, but he still has some pop)

Scouting Report

2004 Season

Dustan Mohr's hustle and blue-collar style of play made him a memorable part of the Giants. He made a game-saving catch in Arizona in early September by crashing into the fence, then getting up and throwing out a runner at second base. He also returned quickly from two injuries that were supposed to have sidelined him much longer.

Hitting, Baserunning & Defense

Mohr hit just .042 in April, but steadily improved. One of his homers was 425-foot blast that reached the second balcony of the Western Metal Supply Co. at San Diego's new Petco Park. Only Sammy Sosa and Ramon Hernandez hit homers into the second tier of the building. Although he's not the fastest outfielder, Mohr made several sensational plays last season. He never stops hustling on the field, sometimes to his detriment. He sometimes hurts himself with his reckless abandon.

I'd say its not BAD, but it sure as hell isn't good. Let's hope he's competing for the 5th outfield spot; backing up the 4th outfielder and filling in as 4th outfielder upon injury.

Its probably pretty rare that people quote and then refute themselves, but that's what I'm about to do. C'mon example1, this guy is a dog; he's scrappy with some good pop. He plays hard and, frankly, looks like Trot Nixon except a little smaller and righthanded. He seems exactly like the type of player the Sox FO picks up every year who turns into a nice acquisition. The guy had 17 HRs last year, made some nice defensive plays and his nickname is Dusty for crying out loud! He's perfect for Boston and his struggle to get playing time will be one of those nice little dramas that always play themselves out as the summer goes on (see Payton, Jay and Kaplar, Gabe).

To clarify, I went back and watched some videos of him on mlb.com and like what I see. His numbers listed above are pretty bad, but he can certainly play Gabe Kaplar's role with a little bit of Doug Mirabelli's power to throw in as well. Nothing too special, but he doesn't look bad.

This is just another one of those low-risk, high reward moves by Theo. However, I don't see it on Boston.com or ESPN.com. But if it's true I'm all for it. It's basically a un-injury prone Trot Nixon who just has to find himself, enter Papa Jack. I think this can can hit .280 every year with some time and work and has a good pop in his bat. It also helps that he can hit against lefties.

I haven't seen this signing on anywhere. Does anyone have a source on this?

If signed, Dustin Mohr is pretty much a 4th outfielder candidate. He played all 3 outfield positions last year in Colorado and is best suited to platoon with Nixon-- if he makes the team I have no doubt that will be his job.

When I saw this thread my first question was: "Can he play center?" and the answer to that question is probably not. He only played 10 games in center last year and throughout his career he's played it sparingly.

The Sox have also acquired former Padre lefty relief pitcher, Craig Breslow who just made his major league debut. A good one too, 14 Ks in 16.1 innings and a 2.20 ERA. In that span he helf lefties to an 0.63 avg

Wow, I can't believe the Pads non-tendered this guy. I wonder if something is wrong with him physically. His MiLB rates look pretty good.

10.30 K/9, 4.24 BB/9, 0.63 HR/9, 8.31 H/9

If he can limit the free passes, he should be a better LOOGY option than DiNardo, since Lenny has reverse splits against lefties.

according to the herald, Mohr is a dead pull hitter and hits almost everything to left field. Always an advantage to have someone like that in fenway.

the sox along with Craig Breslow also signed

Matt Ginter, Jimmy Serrano, Jason Dellaero, Madison Edwards, Tim Duff, Chris Goodman, Jon Searles, Luis Jimenez, and Ron Calloway to minor league deals.

the only guys that have a chance at making the 40 man roster are Breslow and maybe Calloway

the sox also signed a bunch of international free agents

Jose Sierra, Jose Alvarez, Jackvil Avila, Yeiper Castillo, Ronald Bermudez, Victor Larez, Jesus Perez, Leandro Marin, Jose Arai, Melvin Gonzalez, Claudio Batista, Leonardo Arias, Marcial De La Nieve, Reuben Gonzalez, Yamaico Navarro, DJ Yeah, Chih-Hsien Chiang, and Alfredo Bompart as international free agents.

i guess that Chiang kid is supposed to be good. Hes only 17 and was the only one i could find info on.

Kap is the man to get off bumps such as the achilles tendon injury that was supposed to keep him out for like a year or more.

Red Sox notebook: Kapler return close

By Michael Silverman/ Boston Herald

Wednesday, February 1, 2006

The Red Sox are expected to announce a number of minor league signings and spring training invitations in the coming days, many of those names unknown to the masses. One name expected to be on the list will be instantly recognizable: Gabe Kapler. Kapler, who ruptured his Achilles tendon last September in Toronto, expects to be able to help the team early this season. A source close to him said that by early May, Kapler expects to be ready to go. An eight-month recuperation would qualify as being on the early side for this injury, but Kapler’s career-long dedication to his strength and conditioning should help.

The Red Sox are not putting a timetable on Kapler’s recovery but the team is expecting him to be able to help the team sometime this coming season. When Kapler does return, he is expected to immediately join the mix for the fourth outfielder’s job. For now, Dustan Mohr and Willie Harris are the leading candidates for that roster spot.

Exactly. There is no way he can recover that quickly, 4 months for his achilles tendon? Doesn't sound realistic, but maybe it really is happening. Oh well, don't rush it. We have 4 OFs and I would hate to see him get hurt again for something stupid like bringing him back too early.

Get well, rest up, and come back when you're 100% healthy.

I looked up his stats for you guys:

.214 AVG, 17 HR, 38 RBI, .466 SLG, .280 OBP, .746 OPS

His offense is suspect but 13 errors in 500 games is fantastic. I'll take him just for his defensive ability.

Still a stat that the Sox probably loved is that in 2005, against lefties he had hit .275 with a .350 OBP. Serviceable platoon partner to have until Gabe comes back, also considering that Trot still struggled hitting against the south paws. .223 avg, .333 OBP

Remember those numbers are from Coors. I strongly doubt he's going to hit .275 in Fenway. I'd rather have Trot in against lefties than Dustin. The only way I want to see him get on the field is as a defensive replacement late in a game.
