Crisp deal crumbling and Schilling takes potshot at sox fans

Looks like the Injuns want Manny DelCarmen added and the sox are saying hell no.

Take a look at this link where Curt Schilling calls Red Sox fans hypocritical...

Simmons: Do you think it's hypocritical for Sox fans to play the loyalty card with someone like Damon, when some of them also turned on guys who helped Boston win the championship in 2004 (namely, Bellhorn, Millar, Foulke and Embree)?

Schilling: It's beyond hypocritical. Fans use the loyalty card only when it suits the argument. Teams cut/waive/trade guys that DON'T WANT TO LEAVE every day of the year. But somehow the loyalty card only comes to the forefront when a player has played long enough to earn the right to make his own choices as to where he's going to play. It's been that way for a long time, and I don't see it changing. Very few owners are in the public eye enough to be recognized, and in a lot of cases the players end up being hung with the tag of "traitor." What happened here is simple, very simple. Johnny Damon wanted to stay in Boston for more money than the Red Sox thought he was worth, so the Red Sox didn't offer him enough money to remain in Boston, and the Yankees did, end of story

I'd say he's a fan, I mean who else would he be rooting for? However I don't buy his statement.

Yeah, he gave examples about players leaving every day whow ant to be here via waivers, release. Granted they were probably playing terrible at the time (Bellhorn, Embree) so tehre's reason for it. Just because they want to be here doesn't mean they can stay, they have to earn the playing time and the money they get.

In the Damon case I think that everyone forgets that he never told the Sox about the final offer and just took the Yanks 52 mill behind our backs. I'm sure we wouldv'e went higher to maybe 48 mill, in which I'm sure he wouldv'e gone to the Yanks anyway, but he wouldv'e looked far more obvious.

If it is smart business/baseball sense when the FO DFA's non-performers, then it is smart business/baseball sense when players leave for more money. Curt is saying that it is hypocritical for fans to say JD has no loyalty while applauding the FO for releasing Bellhorn, and he's right.

I thought this was true for about 5 minutes, then I realized it was probably the FO's attempt to shift some blame from their business/baseball decision (and I agree with them not signing him). If Damon, via Boras, was just interested in the money, which it seems pretty apparent that he was, then why not give the home team a chance to match/beat the offer? Signing with the Yankees w/o using their price to bring the Sox offer up just doesn't fit into the equation.

i dont think theo or the red sox front office would have went up to 48 million. they may have moved off the 40 million to maybe 44 million. i just don't think the redsox were willing to go that high with because they did not value him as a 50 million dollar player.

That's true, but I hold no grudge because of anyhting he did to the organization itself, that's baseball. He wasn't the first person to sign with a rival, he won't be the last. But he lied to the same fans that made him into the 'rock star' he's become by saying he'd never be a Yankee, blah blah, it's not about the money and so on and so forth. What ever looks good and sells more #18 jerseys, I guess.

If you agree with my post, then Schilling's hypocrisy claim doesn't pertain to you. He isn't calling all Sox fans hypocrites, just the ones that fit into the category I mentioned.

are we sox fans still bitching about damon leaving? it's not like he ran away with your wife, he went to the yankees, big friggan deal. damon is a good player, but you guys make it sound like manny or papi left us for the yankees.

you want to know what's funny. i told one of my roommates the other night that damon left for the yankees and he said "wait, damon isn't a sox anymore" it was probably the best thing i've heard in a while. it really isn't that big of a deal.

If Schilling is on the mound for Johnny's first at bat, watch him protest the game until Fenway gives Johnny a fake applause. Im sorry but I got tix for that game and I need to vent my aggression thats been building up since late December. Its not that left Boston, its who he left to. Sure Pedro left for more money and a New York team, but unlike Johnny he will get an uproarious standing ovation.

Havent I been saying the EXACT same thing for going on like 6 months now??

Nope :D

JK I bet you have, I just don't remember.

Anyway about Damon, that's just how the sports world runs and we're going to have to deal with it.

I hope the fans boo Damon's ass off. I want to see how he would handle it. If he goes 3-4 on that day with 2 stolen bases, I'll bet anyhting the Yanks are winning ouir 27th this year

that one game determines if they will win the world series?

Schill is actually right, we were mad at Damon for having no loyalty to us, but nobody here had any loyalty to Millar, in fact we were saying don't let the door hit you on the way out. Schilling wasnt being rude, but just answering a question truthfully.

What he said was regarding fans in general, not just Sox fans. Yes he did say Sox fans were hypocritical (and he's right) but went on to say fans (in general).

Any fan only gripes about loyalty when it suits them. Yeah Curt makes alot of money, but it doesn't make him less right.

No but it will help determine how Damon's mindset is when it comes to dealing with the level of anomsity he will have to face from Boston down the home stretch and when we probably meet again in the playoffs. We havent had a decent legit leadoff hitter since Chuck. If Damon can get on base 40% of the time, with Jeter and ARod following him, we would put ALOT of pressure on the opposing pitching staff.

You were making it seem like it was a characteristic of only Red Sox fans. Fans of all teams (but I am careful not to say "all fans") are hypocrites. But why should the fans be any different from the players and management?
