in that case i agree with the sox. way to much for millwood. i was hoping he would stay at 4 years.

although i read a 4 year deal with an option

I hate this FO more then anything. This all better be for some kind of plan.

the Sox F.O. kind of lowballed this deal, dont they realize who millwood's agent is?

Tony Masarotti: It is believed that the Sox’ final offer to Millwood was three years for a guaranteed $30 million. The proposal also is believed to have included an option for a fourth season.

smart FO = recognizing the market price for decent players in this WEAK FA mareket.

stupid FO = trying to get people to sign to their deals when there are other higher offers out there, but hey, there's always the year after

Don't forget the other side of that coin.

smart FO = recognizes the inflated cost of talent in a weak FA market

stupid FO = overpays with a long-term deal because of the lack of talent in the market

it actually isnt as bad as it sounds as it really could be a 4 year/ 48 million

Texas can void the fifth year of the deal if Millwood doesn't pitch a certain number of innings in earlier years of the contract. A physical is scheduled for Tuesday. We feel Millwood is a huge risk for 2007 and beyond, so while it's good to see the Rangers back spending money, this has the potential to be a terrible contract, even if it's really more of a four-year, $48 million deal than a true five-year, $60 million contract. i would have been willing to pay 48 million over 4 and do the same thing they did with the option

I don't see why you'd want to be locked into a contract with a guy that can be good when he is at his best but has been pretty inconsistent throughout his career. Especially when you consider how weak this FA class is compared to the next two years. Next year, Pettitte, Mulder, and Zito hit the market. The year after that, Halladay, Oswalt, Carlos Zambrano, and Freddy Garcia hit the market. Plus there are the young arms to consider. Papelbon and Lester are under the Sox control until 2011 and 2012 (if Lester's first full year is 2007). And they'll likely try and extend Beckett next offseason if his injury concerns are answered this year. I don't see the logic of including Millwood in the post-2007 rotation when there are much better options available in the coming years.

Preach on man!!

lol

But seriously, good post.

there are good pitching free agents the next two seasons but we also have to take into account that at least half of them might re-sign with their current team.

Thanks, I think?

Seriously, pretty much echoed my thoughts on the matter. That conbined with my mood at the team resulted in that post haha

the redsox final offer was 3 years at 30 million with an option on the 4th year

Boston's final offer to Kevin Millwood was believed to be for $30 million-$35 million over three years, with a vesting option for fourth year.

The Red Sox also were unwilling to provide the partial no-trade clause that Millwood received from the Rangers. Millwood's five-year, $60 million contract with Texas should be finalized later this week

i really cant argue with that, but is it really their strat to stay out of it because of the weak FA market or are they just a step behind?

The next two years FA markets are much stronger, so I imagine we'll get an answer then.

A little pricey for him but when your rotation looks like the Rangers does I would have paid a Billion for Millwood lol

he's an amazing 4th starter. great 3rd starter. decent 2nd starter. and crap 1st starter.

The FO hasn't really done anything bad at all, and have fallen victim to an insane spending spree by MLBs big spenders. Look at all the inflated contracts: B.J. Ryan, Johnny Damon (IMO), A.J. Burnett, Reggie Sanders, otehrs, and now Millwood. Also these are very Epsteinian decisions (staying put with a reasonable offer) ala Pedro Martinez. It actually will turn out much better in the years to come.

For example, the Blue Jays have drained their bank, and though they look solid on paper they could turn out like the Orioles of not long ago. This also means that we have free'd up money for the enxt few years to spend on FAs actually worth spending money on.

That, combined with the cream of our farm system crop, we could return back to MLBs peak.
