I was just brainstorming while on one of my daily walks I do, and thought of something. When Cubs missed out on the chance to re-sign Matt Clement, some of their F.O. looked at it as a mistake of not retaining him. Would it be plausible for the Sox to offer him in a trade?

Cubs get Matt Clement, and cash considerations or Tony Graffanino

Red Sox get cf Corey Patterson, ss Ronny Cedeno

I'd do that deal in Boston's shoes without Graff but a little bit of cash. Although with guys like Burnett and Milwood getting BIG cash, Clement's $8mil per doesn't look so bad anymore.

I've already stated that I'm high on Patterson and Cedeno, and with the Mariners being rediculous in their requests for Reed this is a reasonable avenue.

I don't see the Cubs too crazy on this deal though. They are looking to add offense and this does the exact opposite of that.

I still like the idea of sending Manny to Chicago and getting Prior back. Maybe we could do something like so:

Cubs get: Matt Clement, Manny Ramirez, cash

Red Sox get: Prior, Patterson, Cedeno, Murton

Cubs replace Prior with Clement, and Murton with Ramirez and all it costs them is two guys they have very little use for anyway. The Red Sox get a potential ace down the road and 2 guys who can help replace Manny now, plus a potential shortstop.

Obviously Zambrano would be preffered over Prior, I am definatly in favor of this deal if it works out, however Prior is too much of a risk at this point to be considered a fair trade for giving up Manny, Landing Zambrano would give us without question the most potent rotation in baseball, and an absolute opportunity at postseason play. Reminder, the 2003 Athletics were in much the same position, with pitching being their strength, projected rotation:

#1 Schilling

#2 Zambrano (or Prior)

#3 Beckett

#4 Clement

#5 Papelbon

If the sox had the opportunity for EITHER Prior or Zambrano they should take it or at least strongly consider it. . I just checked and I had no idea Zambrano is only 24. That raises his value a bit in my book. Zambrano is more of a horse. He seems like a Bartolo Colon type--a guy who can pitch and pitch and pitch.

For all of Prior's injuries, he has still thrown more innings overall and in any particular season than has Josh Beckett. I know his injuries are more serious (elbow or shoulder, I believe) but still, its worth noting.
