my dad just heard a rumor on the radio that we could be sending wells to sd (which will obviously happen), with sd sending prospects to tb, and tb sending lugo to us

i would absolutely love this trade, and it makes sense for all involved

Im with you there... considering he averages 20+ errors a season. Not exactly an improvement over Rent

Yeah I wonder who I would want to see more Tony Graff or Lugo?? Part of me says Graff should play over him. Lugo is probably a more typical lead off guy though.

I was overlooking stats, and the stats would say Loretta could be an option to bat lead off, he holds a career .299 batting avg with a .365 OBP when leading off.

Lugo as the #2, where has been more productive. Career .288 batting avg with .345 OBP

You'd essentially be paying him 9 million dollars with what you paid for renteria, but i suppose thats the case for all viable options right now unless we stayed in house with it. It also sort of forces your hand to trade clement for a bullpen pitcher or not at all, leaving us with stern in center field since we don't have a surplus of trading chips at the moment aside from those two. Now, lets say we sign Millwood and do this, that might not be a bad idea, I could see that making this a little bit more complete. You can then deal Clement for reed while still keeping arroyo in the bullpen, or you trade arroyo and move wakefield to the bullpen.

I think millwood makes that a lot more palatable.

exellent commentary provided by gabekaplerluver. I have to say I agree, but for what is essentially 9 million a year, not bad does not cut it.

I really think we shouldnt do this. Graff can handle it and has alread proved himself. Look at Lugo. He could be Rent's clone statwise.

I don't know the feasibility of this, but Gordon Edes on NESN mentioned the Sox could trade Wells to the Padres for Dave Roberts and Adrian Gonzalez... and since the Padres picked up Termel Sledge it makes Dave more expendable.

I this offer is on the table, the Red Sox should accept it before the Padres change their minds. Roberts is at least a great 4th outfielder, and could fill in in center field if the Sox don't acquire someone more suitable. Adrian Gonzalez can platoon with Youkilis at first in a right/lefty situation.

That deal serves the Red Sox MUCH better than Wells for Lugo IMO.

TAMPA - With the Red Sox Nation in upheaval about losing the bidding war over one of the faces of its franchise - center fielder Johnny Damon - to the rival Yankees, the Rays continued their trade talks with the Red Sox on Thursday that could send shortstop Julio Lugo and possibly center fielder Joey Gathright to Boston.

The new Rays brass has never been in a hurry to rush a trade. Instead they have patiently waited while big-money teams - like Boston - shell out money to fill their holes via free agency instead of doling out prospects in the trade market.

But that's why the Rays are in the trade market - to get high-level major-league prospects for current players with one year remaining on their contracts.

And the Red Sox are in need of a center fielder, shortstop and leadoff hitter. With the market on talent at those positions running low, the Sox are running out of quality options.

While it is unlikely the teams will get a deal done by Christmas, the Rays are continuing negotiations with several other teams, especially concerning Gathright. The Marlins continue to be the most likely trade partner for the speedy center fielder, especially since Florida traded center fielder Juan Pierre to the Cubs, and the Dodgers - another suitor - acquired Kenny Lofton this week.

Despite the fact the Rays acquired third baseman Sean Burroughs during the winter meetings this month, the team is still interested in newly acquired Red Sox third baseman Andy Marte, who came to Boston from Atlanta for Edgar Renteria. The Rays were close to acquiring Marte - tabbed the top prospect in the Braves organization - in a proposed three-team trade that would have sent Lugo to Boston.

I don't mean to be a pain in the ass about it, but could you site your sources? It gives us an idea of how credible the content is, and for future viewings of the site the material came from as well.

Gathright + Lugo to Sox = A Happy DrewDaGreat

eh. This deal just doesn't interest me all that much. Gathright seems like a poor man's Juan Pierre, and Lugo isn't really all that much better than just throwing Graffanino out there at short.

Don't get me wrong, the speed infusion that would result by adding Gathright and Lugo would be welcome, but Gathright isn't a leadoff hitter (at least not yet) and Lugo had almost as many errors as Renteria last year.

There are a handfull of players in Tampa I'd love to get my hands on (Kazmir, Huff, Baldelli, Crawford), and Lugo and Gathright are nice-- but aren't anywhere near worth what they'd no doubt cost dealing with the Devil Rays.

If the Sox could get Gathright cheaply and send him to Pawtucket that'd be one thing.... but I'd stay away from Lugo if it were my decision....

Because Wells has asked for a trade , it should only be done if the Sox can improve their team.David Wells was our best starter last year-15 wins. Look what we had to give up for 15 wins. Obviously there is an age difference between the two,but i believe that Wells becauuse of his mechanics is a younger 40 than say Schilling. He certainly knows how to pitch and is a competitor. To give him up too cheap , because we find ourselves without a ss or a cf is reactive and panicky.

I have the sense the front office is trying to mollify the lunatic fringe by doing something for its own sake..Steady as she goes

TRANSLATION: For a 40 year old, Wells has better stuff than Schilling, therefore making him a "younger" 40 year old. Because Wells does have that good stuff, and because he's a valuable asset to the team (which he incorrectly stated that he had a team leading 15 wins in '05, because Wakefield had 16), he should not be traded away for "too little" in return. We can't get too little in return because we have big question marks in SS and CF, which causes panic. I think the front office is trying to make moves for its own sake to try and numb the sense that they aren't getting anything done. Whatever works...

That's what I believe he said. But yes, very confusing post.
