From the Post:

"I contacted the Yankees and Boston and told them we were getting close and we needed to move forward," agent Scott Boras said. "Cash called me back and gave me a couple of proposals. He gave me a proposal for five years and a proposal for four years and for a couple of hours we had on-and-off discussions. Boston called back, but it wasn't about Johnny, it was about something else. We moved forward with the Yankees. Johnny made a decision on the four-year proposal and that finished it off."

Cashman refused to comment until after the physical is complete, but several Yankee sources said a five-year offer wasn't made. According to Boras, Damon left money on the table from another club to play for the Yankees. "Johnny didn't take the best financial deal," the agent said.

Wonder who had a better deal out there...had to be the Orioles<_>

From Boston Herald:

In an interview on WEEI-AM late yesterday afternoon, Damon claimed that the Yankees initially offered a five-year deal but that it was whittled down to a four-year offer with a higher annual average value. Damon also said that there was another team in the mix that had made a six-year offer. After calling an unspecified Red Sox official Tuesday morning, followed by an afternoon call to manager Terry Francona, Damon said that by 8 p.m., he felt that the Red Sox were not going to budge and it was time to accept the Yankees’ offer

that 6 yr offer most likely was scott boras's typical mystery team which is the same team he said varitek had a 5 yr offer from last yr. i don't buy damon had another offer on the table. that is a typical boras ploy.

Thats hwat I think. I didnt believe him when he said that he had a 6 year deal on the table.

Yeah, he's trying to make himself look innocent instead of him slapping us in the face and going to the Yanks. He's trying to make it sound liek it wasn't about money, BS. i wish we had more players like Andy Pettite, of whom rejected a ridiculously high offer from the Sox when he was an FA, and without hesitation refused it because "I couldn't do that to the fans, and my teammates".

a couple days before Damon signed, the orioles were reportedly about to offer a 5-6 year deal to him

when asked about the bigger offer he got, he said he wanted to play for a contender. So the Orioles were most likely it, unless a team like the tigers jumped in

Yeah sure, and he was about to be knighted by the Queen of England. Try to distinguish BS from fact.

there is no mystery team. its a scott boras tactic that he uses with all his clients. he makes other teams think there is another team out there when there is really not. i highly doubt damon had a 6 yr deal on the table from any team.

Most of us knew that. I'm pretty sure we were joking around about teh Blue Jays, hence their ridiculous big spending this off-season, but I'm not good at telling sarcasm over the interweb.

well you cauight me, too bad some others arent so good at it

After the fact, both Johnny and Boras made mentions of a 6 year deal out there, and giving up $25 million to play in New York.

From the sounds of it, if it is true, someone offered Johnny 6yr $77 million. That comes out to $12.8m/yr, as opposed to the $13/yr he's getting now. He seems to think he won't go Bernie Williams and will be able to make more in the long run by going out on the open market in 4 years.

Posted
I think it was a 6 year 65 million deal he declined. Most likely from Detroit or Balitmore. He initially agreed to a 5 year deal with New York which was reduced to 4 years because Damon "wanted to be a free agent for another 2 year deal at the age of 38" per interview on WEEI.

Like I said before...Boras does this "mystery team" with all his clients. There's ALWAYS a mystery team offering a bigger deal. It's for Boras to get better offers and to make people work faster and harder to get his clients. The team isn't real. It's a tool he uses of manipulation.

there were no other teams. boras always uses a mystery team with every one of his clients. its a negiotiating ploy. no other team offered damon 6 years. they would have been crazy to do so.

Hah, welcome to the club. No one wants to listen to us.

Posted
of course no one wants to listen to us because all they read is media reports. they know nothing of boras tactics of how he negoiates. boras has used those tactics for years to drive the prices up for his players.

The Orioles are dumb enough to do it, don't you think?

im sick of tired of this damon crap , its boston GM's fault that he is with the yanks, they were being cheap with him they should have signed him 3 months ago he's well worth what the yanks gave him. And as far as refusing lesser money somewhere else , well f*** who would you rather play with a last play team or a first play team ??

2 years in a row now that boston GM's f***ed up , this year with damon ,and the year before with pedro (who was well worth what the mets gave him) and i remember people were pissed at pedro for leaving ,its the same thing with damon. f*** boston should have offered him 5 million more than the yanks . i bet you he would have stayed

Yeah, I wish the sox had resigned Pedro so he could have sat out the end of last season when we needed him in the playoffs. I also wish they would have given Damon 15 mill per season, just so the Yankees couldn't get him.

Come on man, there are plenty of other things to be concerned about or paying attention to. We lost Damon, he wanted more than the sox were willing to pay. Its time to focus on getting something good for Manny and resign Ortiz.

id rather have a pedro at 80 percent healthy than what the sox had last year, f*** sorry but the sox pitching aint that great

and as far as damon ,who the f*** is gonna get on base for ortiz to drive in some runs????

I think Damon woulda signed with Boston for less than the Yanks offer had they given him the Varitek treatment.

December 24, 2005 -- As Johnny Damon was still deciding whether to defect to the Yankees, he leaned on some stunning advice from Manny Ramirez, Damon and his wife told The Post yesterday.

Before Damon agreed to his four-year, $52 million contract, he spoke by phone to Ramirez for some guidance and the latest information about the Boston left fielder's trade demand.

Even though Ramirez still is under contract with the Red Sox, he urged Damon over to the other side of baseball's best rivalry.

"Manny said, 'You should go to New York,' " Michelle Damon told The Post.

Johnny Damon confirmed the conversation. Ramirez also may be open to coming to New York, with the Mets.

Earlier this year, Ramirez made it known he prefers to be traded to the Angels or Mariners. It is believed he is willing to go to the Orioles, and the Red Sox dangled him in front of the Phillies earlier this winter.

Damon said Boston is "dismantling" its roster.

Michelle is friends with Ramirez's wife, Juliana, and they also spoke recently. Johnny Damon said he spoke with a number of other Boston teammates, including David Ortiz.

"They told me, 'Congratulations,' " the new Yankees center fielder said.

Although Ramirez, who attended George Washington High School in Washington Heights, said in July he didn't want to play for the Mets, he apparently has changed his mind and now would consider a trade here. However, the Mets feel it will be even more difficult to trade for Ramirez now that he's one of the few remaining run producers in Boston's lineup
