Good trade in my opinion. Rent was overpayed and overrated.

Only if the Red Sox have something bigger up their sleeves... this still leaves us with two vacant infield spots... not to mention a void in centerfield which should have been filled already, just give Johnny the money already.

Red Sox acquired third baseman Andy Marte from the Braves for shortstop Edgar Renteria and cash.

10 or 15 years from now, this offseason could be remembered in Boston for the Marte acquisition, not the Josh Beckett pickup. The Braves were frustrated with the 22-year-old's unwillingness to move off third base, but the Red Sox won't have a problem keeping him there. He's not going to be a Gold Glover, but he should be able to remain at the position for at least the first half of his career, and he'll hit enough to be an All-Star in his prime. The Red Sox will probably send him to Triple-A for one more year and give him a starting job in 2007. Moving Mike Lowell and letting Marte and Kevin Youkilis compete would be another possibility. Are the Sox picking up any of the contract?

According to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, the Red Sox will pay about $11 million of the $29 million that Edgar Renteria is still owed

Posted

1. Damon

2. Loretta

3. Ortiz

4. Manny

5. Nixon

6. Andy Marte

7. Jason Varitek

8. Kevin Youkilis (1st)

9. Alex Gonzalez

since everyone is saying this guy is the best prospect, id like to see him in the majors right away. The twins are interested in lowell and are willing to give up jc romero and Kyle Lohse or Lew Ford

i was really starting to like the trade until i saw this

so in other words we will be payin about 4 mill a yr for the next three yrs to not have rent

i hated the renteria addition last offseason, i knew it was a mistake to give him four yrs of 10 per, but now we have to pay almost half of it to not have him, it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth

if we get alex gonzalez for five mil per, wed be essentially paying 9 mil to have him at ss, thats not good

i do like the addition of this marte kid though, sounds like he could be a great hitter, and hes only 22, i think they should ask lowell to move to first and have this kid the third baseman

this is a great trade one thing that are farm system lacked was power and marte give us that for now and the future he was ranked higher then hanley and has a better bat if we resign damon and manny stays wich all indications are that he'll have top then we have for then enough offense and then we can sign alex gonsalez to play short who give us stability at short with D all we need now is a 1st basemen youk may be fine but i dont see wat the big deal about him is there is a reason he didnt play offer mueller. this gives us clement or arroyo as bait to fill this spot. at the end of the day the defense is improved the offense stays even if not a lil better and both side of the pitching staff are improves with young power arms the only concern is foulke and if he can hold up if this happns we have a really solid team

According to Gordan Edes, Bill Lajoie said he expected to see Marte play for the Red Sox this year, putting him in the outfield or first base if it's necessary to get his bat in the lineup.

anyone we can package to bring OC back?

i love OC but why the hell does anyone want to bring him back so bad? @ 8 mill per i'de really rather rent for 2 more, even though i liked OC much more than renteria.

his obp last year was .309 and has a career obp of .315, THAT IS TERRIBLE!!!!

lugo is far superior, his obp last year was .360 and has a career obp of .340.

oc is terrible offensively, if we bring him back @ 8 mill per we'll regret it, especially if it means trading marte (which the angels have no use for at 3rd)

the angels offered the redsox OC but the sox didnt want his contract according to gammons. They might be interested in the angels backup SS (and smallest player ever in the MLB) Maicer Izturis
Posted

-Gammons though the Marte/Renteria deal was great and made noise that he feels as if the Red Sox think Renteria may be in some sort of slide and needed to get out of the contract.

- So many many pregnant pauses and careful formation of words. Made it sound like Theo is still in on everything.. it was very strange. Maybe he's just being sensational and spinning people up for fun, I don't know.

on ESPN News, he also had some interesting comments:

Braves Offical quoted as saying Marte was the best player they ever traded

The Sox have interest in Anaheims Maicer Izturis, but the Angels would rather trade Orlando Cabrera, but the Sox no longer want to take on his contract.

The Yankees are a bit upset about A-Rod calling Johnny the 'best leadoff man in baseball' when Derek Jeter is still leading off for the Yanks

David Wells may be traded away for a shortstop

Johnny has no real interest in the Yanks, but its just a Boras tactic

Manny will stay in Boston.

Bill Mueller is close to signing with the Dodgers.

"The Red Sox are now expected to sign a free-agent shortstop to replace Renteria rather than pursue a trade with the Devil Rays for Julio Lugo, as had been rumored the last couple of days here at the winter meetings."

Nomar!! Nomar!! Nomar!!

4 Million baby! ;)

Exactly what I was thinking. This would bring boston's old flare back to boston. Hell Yea!!!

Lets just bring everyone back Nomar, Theo, Rocket. I mean come on, Nomar hasnt been healthy for years, and was a problem in the clubhouse for us. He didnt leave on good terms so why would he come back
Posted

there is no possible way nomar can still play SS. you think renterias defense was bad...

ALSO he was offered a 2 year 4 million contract by the blue jays. Imagine the reception he would get in the home opener this year

Posted
nomar aint commin back i wasn't theo that didnt want him it was henry and lucchino and upper mangment they're still hear

I know i've said that im alittle intruiged by Nomar, i'm not intruiged by him at SS. I really think that has no chance of happening.

That said, I think David Wells still has to bring pitching back when we trade him and I certainly hope they plan on keeping Marte. You can't always have your cake and eat it too but I think Marte is great. I could see Cora back at short because they are looking for a defensive player because the sox feel a good defensive shortstop will improve the pitching and offense doesn't mean much. With that out there, I could see them pursuing Pokey Reese, A trade for Jack WIlson or Maicer Izturis. Lugo isn't going to happen, don't worry.

But what the hell about first base? I heard a rumor about Huff, but I heard something on EEI last night that was intruiging too. One of the hosts said that if we acquired Marte, he would be playing at fenway next year with Lowell moving to first base. The sox are apparently really high on Marte and think he can play this year. It would make sense and justify their lust for a defensive short stop alittle more because that would shore up all four spots on the infield with Marte having exceptional glove skill.

They don't listen to reason. I've been trying to tell them since the first time it was mentioned.

I'm telling you right now... we need to make some sort of package to get Felipe Lopez from the Reds. I know they want Youkilis, so there's still hope.
Posted

A trade of David Wells has to bring back to Boston some quality relief pitching. Scott Linebrink is big on the Sox's radar, and with the re-signing of Hoffman, it could actually happen.

Late innings:

Set-Up Men- Guillermo Mota

Mike Timlin

Scott Linebrink

Closer- Keith Foulke

Foulke will be on a short leash. Heck the Sox could decide to make him the closer before the season starts.

id love to get Felipe Lopez to but i dont think hes available. I dont know why the reds would want youk when they encarnacion ready to play 3rd and Dunn at 1st.

what a stupid trade, i didn't like renteria at all because he didn't have a great year in boston, but watch him go tear it up in altana and now there are no ss, i mean alex gonzolez? (.264, .319 OBP)...what i'd do now is sign nomar to a low cost, very high incentive deal

OC might not have had the best numbers, but I still prefer him in the clutch over

Renteria. But since he's not coming back, I'd sign Graffy and see him compete for the full-time starting job. Like O-Cab when he came for half a season, Graff put up numbers while he was in the lineup.
