marte hasnt had much sucess in the minors either. His minor league BA is .274 and he only had 8 hits in 57 AB in the majors last year. He does have some power (62 HR in 400 minor league games) and is good defensively. If the sox got him for Edgar, they could also possibly trade him away for a 1B OR P.

We shoulda re-signed OC, even if he did have a bad offensive year, he's just a loveable guy

You cannot resign players based on how much you like them.

At 21 he slugged .525 and had an obp of .364 in AA. His 05 stats aren't on that site. I believe he put up similar numbers in AAA last year before being called up but i can't be sure. Those are big time numbers for a 3b prospect. Baseball America ranked him as a top 5 prospect in all of baseball last year.

you're right, but to your point, i think O-Cab was a better fit in his half season with Boston than Rent was in his full season, and I think he would have been cheaper to resign instead of going after the higher priced former all-star who also had a bad playoff performance the year they were swept by Boston.

Its on bostondirtdogs.com. Also, I don't think payroll has anything to do with keeping Manny. Manny wants to leave, he doesn't care about money, he just wants to go. He gets 20 million and the sox aren't upset about paying it if he's willing to stay. 6.5 mill might mean we keep Damon, but not Manny.

bdd is by far the worst place to get your information. this is not a personal shot at you example, i just hate that site. they are the lamest, most hypocritical sox fans and don't know jack about baseball. everything they post is to get people to read, half of it is bs. does anyone else remember when they praised the hell out of pavano, only to write about how crappy he was once he signed with the yankees? they pull that bs all the time, they suck.

i understand that manny wants out, it could be due to the fact that the sox have tried to trade him since new ownership came about. but with an extra 5 or so mill saved they might not try to ship him off so much. it's probably too late though. on that note, i wouldn't give damon more than 3 years 33 mill, that's MAX. he isn't worth a 4 year contract.. we don't need anymore aging players that will not fulfill their contract, we didn't do it for pedro, i don't see why damon is an exception and i still don't see why tek was.

We shoulda re-signed OC, even if he did have a bad offensive year, he's just a loveable guy. Yeah, soemthins up with the Rays GM, there's no way Lugo is worth more than Marte, they should've pulled the trigger when they got the offer. I say give Rent anotehr chance, and if he has near the same seaosn he had last year, then trade him, I mean it's only his first year in the AL so you can't blame him entirely just yet.

first off, are you retarted? sign a player because they are loveable? that's probably the dumbest thing i've ever heard, thank god you are not the gm of the sox. don't get me wrong, i love OC, i was all about resigning him but i'm happy we didn't. i don't care how loveable he was.. loveable players don't help teams win the ws, he needs to be good, which he wasn't last year.

i'll be surprised if renteria is much better defensively next year, maybe offensively, but not defensively. it doesn't take a year to adjust to a new ballpark. he practices there everyday and plays 82 games a year there. it's not like he plays in the of where dimensions are different, he plays short. the infield is the same in every single ballpark.

Just to be clear every infield isn't the same and there are a thousand variables even on a major league infield. Yes the dimensions are the same, but everything ranging from the height of the grass to a single pebble affects the infield. I'm not making excuses for him, and I wouldn't. Your statement was just inaccurate.

I'm actually going to disagree to a certain extent. There is something to be said for players that others like to be around. Team chemistry is very important and I thought a mistake the Red Sox did last year was add lame personalities. Edgar Renteria, John Olerud, Matt Clement...I mean these guys are all pretty dull. Now I'm not saying I want a team of clowns but I really feel personality goes a long way. David Ortiz isn't just loved in Boston because of his great hitting....he is a tremendous personality. Now there are guys like Kevin Millar who I can't stand the way he plays the game but he sticks around because he is good for the team. Orlando Cabrera is an excellent player and a fun player and the Red Sox knew it...but they got greedy and went with numbers not thinking...OC was a better fit for the Red Sox than Renteria. You could say OC had a bad season but it might not have gone that way if he was in Boston.

A lot of people aren't that excited about Mike Lowell and are already talking about trading him but I think the guy has a great attitude...the players like him...and he is a leader...that is exactly the type of thing we need...that helps hold a team together.

you know ive been thinking about something. Comment about it if you like. Since Tony G can play just about every position except for pitcher and catcher... any chance Sox could net Tony G to a 2 or 3 year deal to be their starting short stop? An infield of Lowell, Graff, Loretta and Youk/Marte could be a Sox pitcher's dream of having behind him.

Boston Herald: Competition at second may not be a bad thing, said senior adviser Bill Lajoie, who along with baseball operations member Jed Hoyer noted that Graffanino can play in nearly every infield position. “His versatility is very appealing,” said Hoyer.

First off there are a few reasons why:

Though I don't mind Renteria and he was one of my favorite shortstops in the MLs pre-Sox but he doesn't seem to fit well in Boston. Not sayin he has trouble with the media but the fanbase was way too harsh on him at first. I'm talkin purely about fit and OC fit a lot better. Hell, he had handshakes with half the team, and also he only had a bad offensive season due to injury at the begining of the season. MC Hammer got on me for this already so there's no need to go further with it.

Also Edes clarified on the Rent to the Braves for Marte and then shipping him to TB:

The Sox could cut separate deals with Atlanta and Tampa Bay, sending Renteria to the Braves for Marte, then using Marte as part of a bigger deal with Tampa Bay in which they would not only acquire the shortstop they have targeted, Julio Lugo, but also first baseman Aubrey Huff and/or closer Danys Baez. The Sox have shown interest in Huff in the past and that may be renewed after they failed to acquire Milwaukee first baseman Lyle Overbay. To make a bigger deal, the Sox would probably have to offer a package including Marte, catcher Kelly Shoppach, and pitcher Bronson Arroyo.

i don't want huff over here, i just don't like him and think there are better options like chad tracey and adrian gonzala, and now since the blue jays got overbay, eric hinske can come back to boston
Posted

Can count out Chad Tracey. Reports are the Diamondbacks will try to settle a long term extension with him.

But whose to say if acquired that Huff would be the 1st baseman. He's versatile at playing all outfield positions. Question marks are surrounding Manny, Damon and even Trot returning

I really like the idea of keeping Tony G any way we can. He appears to have plenty of range and although SS and 2B are very different positions I think Tony G is more than capable.

i know that infield grass etc is different, some stadiums have the foul territory slanted etc. i was talking about dimensions..

what are you talking about? have you met clement, olerud or renteria in person? do you know them? how can you say they have a dull personality? it's like saying someone is a jerk without ever meeting them.

had a bad year because he had a bad year. for all you know he could have had a worse year in boston.. it goes both ways.

i'm keeping lowell around because he's a productive player, not because he's a nice guy. people say bonds is a super jerk, i don't care, i'll take bonds on my team anyday, you'de take puljos on your team if he was a jerk too. manny, ortiz, puljos, game over, jerk or not.

you guys are looking into handshakes way too much, maybe rent wasn't good with handshakes, does that mean he'll have a bad season? no
