i don't know if anyone else is in favor of it, but i was wondering if Boston would sign Frank Thomas to a low risk-high reward contract...i mean the guy is a beast, career .427 OBP and .307 BA with 445 career HRs, and I know he's been hurt but he also prolly has a chip on his shoulder with the White Sox and all...I think Boston should try to sign him to a 1 year 3.5 million contract with a 7 million option

When would he ever play? I don't want to see him on first and I don't think he'd ever have a chance to start over Ortiz at DH. I just don't see how he would fit in.

he's not terrible, millar like for most of his time but the past few years have seen a dramatic decrease in f% (yes, i know there are other stats to look at) but that could be due to small sample size and injuries.

i don't see how signing him to a small 1 yr contract could hurt. we would platoon him with youk (poor kid) and see how it plays out.

manny, ortiz, big hurt in the middle of the lineup.. that would be devastating, assuming the big hurt isn't big on hurting himself (i made a lame funny)

Frank Thomas is only getting interest from teams for one specific reason, to use him as a DH. Boston already has one in Ortiz and doesnt need an injury prone 1st baseman that Thomas most certainly is. Id take Olerud over him in an instant

The Orioles, Twins, and A's are the most likely suitors.

i agree with everything you said with the exception that the big hurt is injury prone. he might be old, but injury prone is too loosely used. thomas has played full seasons almost every year. he was an absolute monster in 03. he was injured in 04 and in 05 was diagnosed with ankle inflammation. that's something that is fixed with 3-4weeks of therapy. the problem was that the injury was far more advanced than first thought and he had surgery performed.

knowing that he's had plenty of time to fully rehab i don't doubt why thomas can't contribute to a team. he showed he still has PLENTY of pop in his bat when he came back last season where he had that HR tear.

to chose johnny O. over thomas is nuts, especially if the risks are low and the rewards are high.

I've always been a fan of Frank Thomas because he has always (with the exception of the last 2 years) has been a monster with the bat. I wouldn't mind seeing the Sox sign him to an incentive laden deal, especially if Ramirez is traded. The potential is still there for him to put up big numbers, especially in Fenway Park.

The sticking point of course is where to put him. Chicago didn't play him in the field, and with his injuries the past two years he's best suited as a DH. Of course, the Red Sox already have the best DH in the game in David Ortiz.

One of those two would have to play first base. I wouldn't be opposed to it, but seeing the risk involved with Thomas at this point, it would have to be for low guaranteed money with incentives.

I guess Ortiz could play 1B but then not only do we have a defensive liability, but Ortiz is also more likely to get injured. I just don't see this being worth it anyway you try to flip it.

I have to admit the idea of thomas being able to hit like he used to... in a boston uniform, is really happy. Such happy thoughts though can't come true. I don't think he can hammer like that anymore. I'm just not seeing anything that shows me he can. Could he? Maybe I really don't know enough, but I don't think he will.

stop making it sound like this guy is griffy jr. he had an ankle injury, then had surgery on it. it's not like he's crippled for life. the last time he came back he had something like 9 straight at bats with HR's. this guy can obviously still hit as long has his ankle is back.

Yeah but his ankle is a major problem. He's 37 years old and one injury at that age is all you need for your career to be over. He may not have a vast history of injuries but an injury past the age of 35 in really hard to come back from. If we could get him guaranteed without injury for this season then I would take him and find a way to work him in, but I just don't see him getting through a whole season without injury at his age.
