Kapler is home in Los Angeles and reports that he is feeling “really, really great,” his Achilles’ tendon is healing fine, and his recovery is actually ahead of schedule. Kapler is still using a walking boot (similar to the one Curt Schilling had while recovering from his ankle surgery last year), but hopes to be ready by the start of spring training.

The red sox released kapler today and purchased contracts of 6 other players

Sox add 6 to 40-man

By Steve Silva, Boston.com Staff

Even without a GM in place, the Red Sox keep making moves as the team announced the addition of six players to their 40-man roster today.

The Sox purchased the contracts of righthander Jesus Delgado, righthander Harvey Garcia, lefthander Jon Lester, outfielder Brandon Moss, outfielder David Murphy and righthander David Pauley.

Additionally, the club today released outfielder Gabe Kapler from the 40-man roster.

With the seven roster moves, the Red Sox have 37 players on their 40-man roster.

Jesus Delgado, 21, went 7-3 with two saves and a 3.50 ERA (28 ER/72.0 IP) in 33 relief appearances last season for Single-A Greenville. Signed by the Red Sox as a non-drafted free agent in February of 2001, the Venezuelan righthander struck out 69 batters in 72.0 innings and held South Atlantic League hitters to a .215 batting average. The 6-foot-1, 198-pounder recently pitched for the Peoria Saguaros of the Arizona Fall League, posting no record and a 4.08 ERA (8 ER/17.2 IP) in 10 games out of the bullpen.

Harvey Garcia, 21, went 3-5 with six saves and a 2.01 ERA (10 ER/44.2 IP) in 32 relief appearances for Bostonâââ?‚¬??¬ââ?‚¬??¢s Greenville affiliate, his first full season in Single-A and his first campaign pitching exclusively in relief. A mid-season South Atlantic League All-Star, the 6-foot-2, 170-pound righthander finished the year with 54 strikeouts and just 18 walks in 44.2 innings, an average of 10.9 strikeouts per nine innings. Prior to 2005, Garcia made 39 of his first 51 professional appearances as a starter in the Marlins (2001-02) and Red Sox organizations. The native of Caracas, VZ originally signed with the Red Sox on June 14, 2002.

Jon Lester, 21, earned Double-A Eastern League and Red Sox Minor League Pitcher of the Year honors in 2005 after leading the league with a 2.61 ERA (43 ER/148.1 IP) and 163 strikeouts. Bostonâââ?‚¬??¬ââ?‚¬??¢s first pick (second round) in the 2002 Draft was also a mid-season and post-season Eastern League All-Star selection, posting an 11-6 record and limiting opponents to a .215 batting average in 26 starts. The southpaw last season was also named the Red Sox Minor League Pitcher of the Month in June and July. The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder went 3-1 with a 1.69 ERA (6 ER/32.0 IP) in six June starts and owned a 2-2 record and 1.54 ERA (4 ER/23.1 IP) in four starts in July.

Brandon Moss, 22, last season advanced to Double-A Portland following a breakout season with Single-A Augusta in 2004 when he earned South Atlantic League Player of the Year after hitting .339 with 13 homers and 101 RBI in 109 games for the Greenjackets. With Portland last season, Moss was a mid-season Eastern League All-Star and completed his campaign with a career-high 16 home runs while batting .268 with 61 RBI, also setting career highs with 135 games played, 87 runs scored and 31 doubles. Following the season, Moss was one of six Red Sox prospects to participate in the Arizona Fall League, batting .236 (17-for-72) in 22 games. The six-foot, 180-pounder was originally selected by the Red Sox in the eighth round of the 2002 Draft.

The 2005 Red Sox Minor League Defensive Player of the Year, David Murphy committed just four errors in 131 games in center field last season for Portland. The Red Sox first pick (17th overall) in 2003 batted .310 (75-for-242) in his final 66 games of the season, including a .379 (39-for-103) average in 28 July contests to earn the organizationâââ?‚¬??¬ââ?‚¬??¢s monthly Offensive Player and Quality Plate Appearances awards. The left-handed batter and thrower led the Sea Dogs in 2005 with 75 RBI, batting .275 with 14 home runs and 71 runs scored in 135 games. Murphy, 24, recently played for the Peoria Saguaros of the Arizona Fall League, batting .319 (29-for-91) with three homers, nine RBI and 20 runs scored in 24 games.

David Pauley, 22, went 9-7 with a 3.81 ERA (66 ER/156.0 IP) in 27 starts for Portland, his first season in the Red Sox organization and his first at Double-A. Acquired from San Diego on December 20, 2004 with Jay Payton and Ramon Vazquez for Dave Roberts, the 6-foot-2, 170-pounder issued only 34 walks in 156.0 innings, an average of 1.96 walks per nine innings. Pauley led the Sea Dogs staff in innings and starts and trailed only Lester with nine wins and 104 strikeouts. A native of Longmont, CO, Pauley was originally selected by the Padres in the eighth round of the 2001 Draft.

Kapler was left off the 40 man roster today.

Two questions about the list.

First, if you're left off the 40 man roster, doesn't that mean another team can come in and grab a guy as a "Rule 5" guy? And if so, the second question. Where is Dustin Pedroia?

I don't know if I'm psyched or scared of this roster for next year....

IMO there will be so many changes from near future to spring training, you shouldnt really worry right now about the roster. There's just 37 names listed also, I would find it hard to believe they let Dustin Pedroia be grabbed by another team.

Abe Alvarez- trade bait

Bronson Arroyo- likely to be involved in any trade talks for a 1st baseman

Matt Clement- could be used as trade bait if a free agent starting pitcher is signed

Chad Bradford- dont see him as a Sox in 2006

Wade Miller- not in Sox's plans

David Wells- will either retire or be traded

Roberto Petagine- Youmiri Giants are looking to reacquire him

Kelly Shoppach- trade bait

----------------------------------------

and yes i can understand gabe kapler being left off the roster, its not even a 100% definite that he will be back by spring training. Besides it is said anyway that any trade talks between the Sox and Padres has included re-acquiring Dave Roberts.

Im not entirely sure how much time Hansen will be in the majors for 2006, what is certain is that he along with DelCarmen will start the season off in Pawtucket, call-ups during the season of course. Timlin needs a co-setup man, hopfeully if Sox are able to aquire Padres' Akinori Otsuka.

Long Relief- Lenny DiNardo

Lefty Outs- Mike Myers

Set-Up Men- Akinori Otsuka

Mike Timlin

Closer- Keith Foulke (will be on short leash of course)

I'd like if possible that 6th spot to go to free agent BJ Ryan, but thats a big if as he is wanted by just about every team. For 2007 that does leave 2 open spots for DelCarmen and Hansen. That being from Sox most likely letting Foulke walk or trade him during July trade month, and Mike Timlin seems to be entering his last season.

Gabe Kapler will be re-signed to a minor league contract by the Red Sox. He hopes to be ready to play in spring training. Apparently, the Red Sox guaranteed Kapler $850,000 in 2006 when they brought him back from Japan in July. He'll get his money, but the team released him yesterday in order to gain a 40-man roster spot. Because he was released, he won't be eligible to rejoin the major league club until May 15. That could work out well, as Rule 5 pick Adam Stern will need to begin the year on the active roster but will be eligible to be sent down in May.

Question is: Why have any talks between the Sox and Padres include dave roberts name if stern and kapler are in their plans? hmmm

To be eligible for the Rule 5 draft you need to have a certian number of years in professional baseball and not be on the 40 man roster. I think the number of years is 3, but it could be 4 or 5 (im not sure) and as I recall Dustin was drafted in either 2003 or 2004, making him ineligible for the Rule 5, so he cant get taken. They will use the other 3 spots for players who can be taken.

From ESPN:

The Rule 5 draft

First off, note that it's not the "Rule V Draft," but the Rule 5 draft. It's called the Rule 5 draft because the section of the Official Rules that covers the draft just happens to be Rule 5 in the book.

Eligibility: A player not on a team's Major League 40-man roster is eligible for the Rule 5 draft if: the player was 18 or younger when he first signed a pro contract and this is the fourth Rule 5 draft since he signed, OR if he was 19 or older when he first signed a pro contract and this is the third Rule 5 draft since he signed.

A player drafted onto a Major League roster in the Rule 5 draft must remain in the majors (on the 25-man active roster or the DL) for all of the subsequent season, or the drafting club must attempt to return him to his original club. However, since a returned Rule 5 player must first be placed on outright waivers, a third club could claim the player off waivers. But of course, that club would then also have to keep him in the majors all season, or offer him back to his original club.

Occasionally, the drafting club will work out a trade with the player's original team, allowing the drafting club to retain the player but send him to the minors.

I think we should send Stern and Wells to the Pads and get Otsuka and Roberts back. I don't see any futuere with the sox for sterk and might as well just push that trade over the edge.

Not to steal your thunder but Riverside Sluggers previously posted this in the same thread ( page 1 at the end ).
