Ryan Howard of the Phillies has been named the National League's Rookie of the Year, beating out both Willie Taveras of the Astros and Jeff Francouer of the Braves.

Huston Street pf the Athletics has been named the American League's Rookie of the Year, beating out both Robinson Cano of the Yankees and Johnny Gomes of the Devil Rays.

I didnt post a link because my computer is giving me a hard time, so if you feel the need for a link feel free to post one.

I have no problem with Howard winning but I think that Cano should have won it for the AL. Yes, I am probably being somewhat biased considering I am a Yankee fan, but I think I would feel the same even if I was a ROyals fan or a Rockies fan or an Angels fab, but whatever, Street definately deserves it.

since Papelbon had made his majors debut in july this past season, does that put him out of the running for "rookie of the year" in 2006? Im thinking he'd viable to win that with all signs pointing to him having an important effect in the rotation

According to mlb.com.....

Determining rookie status:

A player shall be considered a rookie unless, during a previous season or seasons, he has (a) exceeded 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the Major Leagues; or (B) accumulated more than 45 days on the active roster of a Major League club or clubs during the period of 25-player limit (excluding time in the military service and time on the disabled list).

Papelbon pitched 34.0 innings, and he debuted on July 31. Which means even if he didn't get optioned back to Pawtuckett for a week or so in August, he'd only have 31 days of service time during the 25-player limit. So, he will maintain rookie status next year.

Street deserved it; the voters picked the right guy.

Cano finishing second is good...considering the Yankees "have no farm system."

He's basically the best minor leaguer they have, they really have no farm system, they just trade all their good minor leaguers for older sluggers. Otherwise they'd have a Red Sox type farm system. That's why the Yankees will fail, while the Red Sox make up their past 90 years of basically failure.

Both deserved it IMO, Howard did fantastic, and I KNEW Huston Street would win the AL from the start.

He debuted that early? I'm not sure then. I thik he might be at the threshold

We'll see how much of Theo's farm system is still around in a couple of years since LL is now running the show

yeah he had made the July 31 start against the Twins, which was won by that event in the 8th inning where Manny came out to pinch hit to drive in the winning run. I was at that game, I never heard Fenway that loud.

I remember that game, didnt they keep Manny out of the lineup in case he got traded during the game or something...or was this the game that he asked for the night off??

Manny was kept out by tito's decision mostly due to Fenway's faithful's dismay they showed manny after hearing he wanted to be traded again. July 31st being the trade deadline Tito also had kept him out of the game for Manny to avoid the media outlets and such.

Yeah most of us had thought he had been traded away when we didnt see him in the lineup, hence the raucous standing ovation he had gotten when he all sudden came out of the dugout to pinch hit.
