are you that young, you obviously are because you are talking as if mattingly was your average joe ballplayer. growing up as a red sox fan, the type of great player he was I had wanted him to be on the red sox.

1985 AL MVP

Mattlingly is a 6 time All-Star (1984-1989)

10 time gold glove winner (1985-1994)

3 silver slugger awards for a 1st baseman (1985-1987)

5 time batting champ (1984-1988)

Not only that, he was and continues to be one of the classiest guys to play the game.

I believe he means based on his stats, and after looking at them, besides 2000 hits he has nothing on Mo Vaughn.

What about the 10 gold gloves?

if you are implying that he had 'intangibles' (such as the usual blah blah blah 'classy', 'leader' b.s.), then i can retort with 'he played on crappy teams and never won a world series'.

by those markers, Mark Grace is a hall of famer. Grace was an excellent ballplayer, but probably not hall of fame material. that's my point.

see: Mark Grace, Robin Ventura.

Ozzie Smith was all defense- his offense was pure garbage. he's in the hall of fame because he was well liked by the media. by those standards, both Ventura and Grace make the hall.

and as for the gold glove thing, often it turns into a popularity contenst. for example, both Aaron Rowand and Joe Crede should win gold gloves this year. Rowand might win just because he was able to play extraordinarily well in front of east coast writers at Yankee Stadium. those writers don't notice ANYTHING until you do it at their house. it's total b.s. as for Crede, he'll get jobbed because the eastern writers will vote for Alex Rodriguez. Crede was the better defensive player this year and meant more to his team. even without the playoffs, where he's been simply incredible.

You seem to have this idea that the east coast writers will screw over Crede and give it to A-Rod. What are you basing that on? A-Rod has never won a gold glove at 3rd and Eric Chavez(Who plays for a west coast team) has had that award on lock down for the past 4 years. I havent heard any hype for a gold glove for A-Rod at 3rd. I would worry about Chavez winning it before A-Rod.

Another ill-advised comparison. How many MVP's has Grace won?(0) In fact how many times was Grace even in the top 10 for MVP voting?(O) I wont go into the silver slugers that Grace doesnt have nor the batting crowns that he doesnt have. The funny thing is I'm not even one of those Yankee fans that will go to their grave thinking that Mattingly is a HOF. I will however defend him when hes being trashed.

That was a long, long, long time ago. Giving the White Sox franchise a label like that after all these years is like labeling Boston as being racist for the reputation it had a long, long time ago. These are not the same people who were around way back then in 1919. These are a group of players who won the World Series, who HAPPEN to play for the Chicago White Sox. Seriously, not respecting a team because of something that happened nearly 90 years ago is ludicrous. The White Sox fully deserved this World Series win. They played like the best team in baseball in every playoff game. They only lost ONCE in the 2005 playoffs. Give the guys a break, and just root them on. They want it just as bad as the Yanks want it. Don't start a s*** storm because of ******** that happened long ago.

As a franchise I don't respect them. The 2005 White Sox, I've got nothing against. But it's tough to shake something like that.

I honestly don't respect the Red Sox franchise for being an incredibly racist organization in their past, but I don't hold that against this club.

Just my opinion.

compete with younger contenders next year like the White Sox,

2006 White Sox:

Young team, definitely.

Contenders? It's a question mark.

Good luck with Paul Konerko.

The Yankees are old. They will not contend unless Porgie Georgie goes out and takes the short-cut of buying other teams' players again.

Williams, Mussina, Johnson, Martinez, Giambi, and Sheffield are all moving into their middle and late 30's- young for a person, old for a pro ball player.

Sheffield, Mussina, and Giambi have some good years left, but they're going to need a better ensemble to compete with younger contenders next year like the White Sox, Guardians, A's, Angels, and possibly the Twins.

HMMM, I think there's this team who's colors are black and white, and they just won the World Series, and had 3 players from their farm on the WS roster. Can anyone tell me who this is?

THE DAMN WHITE SOX!!!!! Open your f***ing eyes before you act like your team hasn't done anything like that, DAMN! I couldn't believe it when I heard that stat that someone like you could actually nail Steinbrenner for doing something HIS OWN TEAM DOES!!!

And I'm defending the Yanks...??? :dunno: Does not happen often.

2001 with the Diamondbacks. Mark Grace has a ring.

dont remind me

lol

I wasn't taking a shot at the Yankees. Or reminding them to cause greif, I was just showing CTS that Grace has a ring.

BTW, that IMO was the best WS I've ever seen. Last year's was great but the high-strung emotion wasn't there like it was for the ALCS.

That ALCS wiped me out. Hell the 2003 one nearly killed me. I'm not sure if I can take another ALCS between our two clubs.

the way this offseason is going for both clubs, i can guarantee our teams will meet and it will most likely probably be another hell of a ride ;)

hopefully both rotations actually stay healthy :( i think we can agree 2005 was a topsy turvy baseball season

My only request is that they not schedule any Red Sox-Yankee games until May. April is wayyyy too early to get so jacked up for a series. baseball is supposed to be a relaxed game that you can watch and relax, but we all know its different when our teams hook up. I'd rather save that intensity for at least past April (specially since the Yanks got some octogenarians in our rotation who seemingly needs like a month to warm up those brittle brones of theirs)
