Hockey great Wayne Gretzky says there's no place for hazing in sports

VANCOUVER (CP) - Any sort of hazing is ridiculous and shouldn't be allowed in sports, NHL icon Wayne Gretzky said Wednesday.

"There's no room for it," said Gretzky, the NHL's all-time scoring leader who now coaches the Phoenix Coyotes. "It's the most ridiculous thing in sports. It's hard enough for a young guy to go into a locker room." Two high-profile cases involving sports teams and initiation rites have raised the whole issue of hazing.

McGill University officials cancelled the remainder of the football team's season earlier this week because of a hazing incident in which an 18-year-old rookie alleged he was sexually assaulted with a broomstick by a veteran player while others looked on and cheered.

The Ontario Hockey league suspended Windsor Spitfires coach and GM Moe Mantha for the season and playoffs as GM and 40 as coach for two separate incidents - an on ice-fight between two players and a hazing incident in which players were told to strip and cram into the washroom at the back of a team bus.

Gretzky said when he first joined the Edmonton Oilers in 1979 any sort of initiation was eliminated from the team.

"We never had an initiation with the Oilers," he said.

"Lee Fogolin was our captain. He didn't believe in it and when I became captain I kept that going.

"It's just wrong. It's hard enough for a 16-year-old. As a captain as a hockey team I didn't like it and didn't allow it. There's no room for it."

Hazing the rookies is one of my favorite parts of the season. we shave the rookies heads in 2 1/2 week on my hockey team (right after training camp) , then all season they take out the goals and put them back and they pick up the pucks.

Just wondering, whoever is on a school sports team what do you make the freshmen/rookies do?

Making them clean up after the team isn't necessarily hazing...

We make them clean up after us on the football field, take the hitting dummies in, just stupid stuff like that.

On the contrary, the kind of activity like tying someone to a tree, taping their mouth shut, and then throwing things at them, that's what I consider "hazing."

My friend plays for the college hockey team. Last year, all the rookies, they had to drink 5 beers that were sitting in boiling water in 30 minutes.

If you've ever had beer that's warm -- you can imagine how disgusting that'd be.

All rookies deserve to have brooms shoved up their asses. We need fecal matter on the face and a large quantity of blood!

Yeah, that is how you really make them earn their millions.

I played 1 season for a D-I aa football, and they made us spin. Where you hold a football with your arms straight above your head look up at the ball and spin 30 times. Sounds easy but alot of people threw up, and what made it worse this was at the start of practice, so the whole time you were still dizzy.

I once played soccer (to get in shape) before basketball season. We where sent to the school's kitchen to fill up the water jugs. When we got there the lunk ladies asked us for some help getting the freezers open. So we helped. Once we got them open we walked in too look around. Most of the boxes said "GRADE F, BUT CONSUMABLE". This was my freshman year so after that I refused to eat school lunch ever again.

It's funny I'm 27 and the things I remember about high school is s*** like that, not what the teachers taught me.

That's gross, but it's not very suprising. :thumbdown

I guess hazing is a little more serious at the Pro level but my Freshman year of HS was the only time I really experienced hazing. The team stole the freshmans clothes and shoes after practice, and had the bus leave before we got out of the lockerroom. So we had to walk home in our uniforms and spikes ... sucked.

For our local baseball team we'd just make the first year kids run extra laps for any mistakes they made during practices.

BTW hazing definatly has a place in sports. I don't understand why we have to bitchitize(couldn't think of a real word) everything these days. Grow a pair of balls and take your medicine just like everyone else did.

I don't like what's being applied here. Therefore, f*** you, f***face.

When it's something small, it's one thing... but when it's sexually assaulting somebody with a broom stick or making them drink an amount of alcohol that they're not capable of drinking, it's another.

I'm all for giving people 'bitch duties' or stuff like that -- but when it starts to put someones health in jeopardy, or involves things going up the ass -- I'll be one of those people against it.

Yeah, I'm not familar with that particular kind of hazing in sports, but I hear it happens in college fraternities and sororities. Broom stick...yikes. :o

Canadians are cool! :D
