who'd you trade arroyo for?

if thats what it would take to get aubrey huff from the d-rays, or lyle overbay from the brewers. id have the front office do it. that would leave a sure spot for papelbon in the rotation.

dont get me wrong i respect the hell out of arroyo

Lyle Overbay is elligible for arbitration and the brewers aren't going to pay him, hes going to walk. They could sign him if they don't opt to trade for Huff. I like Huff alittle more, but they're both plus options.

I really don't think Burnett is as good as everyone is saying, granted I wouldn't mind him cming here, unless its for a bloated contract. Papelbon should be in the rotation, I project him starting out in the 5th spot. If we don't trade Arroyo he should definately be put in the bullpen as a middle/long relief guy and provides excellent insurance in case a starter goes down. I don't know what to do if Wells doesn't retire, if that case I wouldn't mind having a 6 man rotation. That way pitchers would go in and be able to last up to maybe 120 pitches. As for the bullpen it wasnt so bad as it was everyone got injured. If we were to sgin anyone I'd love to pick up Spooneybarger who is a FA. He's young, probably cheap and I believe hes a lefty. He did great a year ago in Atl.

Schilling- Must re-gain 2004 form and provide staff anchor

Wakefield- Was much better than stats showed, keeps on goin' despite age

Burnett- Maybe with proper training can finally reach full potential, control a factor

Clement- Great 1st half, needs to put a full season together and lower ERA

Papelbon- Clemens and Schill wrapped into 1. Should become our next ace.

DiNardo/Delcarmen

Arroyo

Spooneybarger

Myers

Hansen

Timlin

Foulke

i like clement getting traded before arroyo does

clement is still owed $17 million, arroyo is just the club option on him--making arroyo the easier, more desirable, and less expensive one to trade off

That is deffinitly the case. It would be pretty tough to trade Matt Clement. My personal preference would be keeping Arroyo and moving Clement...mostly cause Matt didn't really win me over this season. But like you said most teams would want Arroyo over Clement.

The Red Sox are recommending that Matt Clement undergo surgery on his left knee. He'll have a second opinion first. The nature of the injury is unknown, but according to agent Barry Axelrod, it is minor. The knee flared up during spring training and never bothered Clement again. Only during a year-end medical review did the team note the problem and ask Clement to have the MRI. It sounds as though the Red Sox want to play it safe and avoid another Keith Foulke-type situation.

Coming out and recommending Clement have surgery kills any hope of a trade. And with Wells on the way out, I don't see dealing Arroyo either.

I'd like to see B.J Ryan come to Boston actually. I think it would strengthen the bullpen alot. From what I saw outta the guy he looked pretty solid when he did pitch. And his arm would really be a great accquistion to the bullpen.

good to get this out of the way! look forward to seeing you again on the mound Timlin. well just not with inherited runners ;) ah i kid

Timlin is set to re-sign

01:00 AM EDT on Friday, October 28, 2005

BOSTON -- On the first day on which players could file for free agency, the Red Sox took care of one item on their off-season shopping list, reaching a tentative agreement with veteran reliever Mike Timlin. Timlin, who established a club record for most appearances (81) in a season last year, will return on a one-year deal. Timlin is likely to earn a modest increase from his 2005 base salary of $2.75 million, with the new deal worth somewhere close to $3.5 million.

The team will have Timlin undergo a physical early next week, which will make the agreement official. Timlin, who will turn 40 in March, has spent the last three seasons as a bullpen workhorse for the Sox, appearing in 229 games over that span. Last year, he was 7-3 with a 2.24 E.R.A. with 13 saves. He spent the final five weeks of the season as the team's closer, allowing Curt Schilling to return to the starting rotation.

He's been remarkable durable in his career, having appeared in 60 games or more in each of the last nine seasons. His 893 career appearances rank him second among active pitchers. Only four American League reliever compiled more innings than Timlin (80 1/3). His 13 saves were the most he's had since earning 27 in 1999. It's expected that Timlin will return to the set-up role next season.

this is good; if Keith Foulke returns to form we could have the best bullpen in baseball. With 2 specialists two Hard throwers(Hansen, Delcarmen) and soild Mike Timlin

Tricks of the trade in play with Wells

If it's up to Theo Epstein in Boston and Kevin Towers in San Diego, David Wells will get his wish to play in Southern California. According to a San Diego source, the Padres have missed Wells's leadership, and they appear willing to package something for the 42-year-old lefthander that would satisfy the Sox. The Padres may part with righthanded starter Brian Lawrence or set-up man Akinori Otsuka or both, but not starter Adam Eaton, who would be more coveted by the Sox.

Lawrence, who will earn $3.5 million next season, had a poor 2005 season -- 7-15, with a 4.83 ERA -- but he has made 31-34 starts each of the last four seasons. Otsuka, who has a $1.75 million option for '06, was 2-8 with a 3.59 ERA and blew six of his seven save opportunities, but he's been a workhorse with 139 appearances the last two seasons.

I would be very interested in Otsuka. He is a little bit older but still much younger than David Wells. He can eat up a lot of innings and is a strikeout pitcher. Through 3 innings this postseason he gave up 1 hit and 1 walk. This is good stuff....get it done.

Lawrence on the other hand...he is a little more expensive and I don't know what we would do with him other than ship him to another team. He is no better than the other players we have.

i agree with you about otsuka after looking over his career stats, if padres were to deal lawrence. sox could try and pull a 3 team deal between them, pods, and devil rays who will gladly take starting pitching at this time.

just a thought

Sox getting Aubrey Huff and Otsuka and a prospect in the deal.

Padres get Wells from the Sox and D-Rays could offer an outfielder considering they have a surplus in the majors and triple A of outfielders. Baldelli will be back in full force in 2006, so any of the others could be the odd man out. (Giles could be goin to another team, even if he stays it would be insurance for them considering he will turn 35 in the spring)

Devil Rays get Arroyo, Lawrence
