Lol, no kidding, but no, i say keep mr. renteria. Unless Jed Lowrie makes serious strides in AA this year we don't have any other route to go at short stop for the next four years.

I think Wells is going as well, I don't think he will go to the pads as they are hot on the trail of kenny rogers. I think the most likely scenario right now is wells for Duchscherer with Hawkins from the Giants as a fall back.

hawkins was just traded to baltimore for steve kline

Well maybe that's why we're interested in Lugo.

I'm wondering if Wells to LA Dodgers story has any credibility. I'm not sure who we would get in return, but Caesar Izturis seems like a possibility, right? They just signed Furcal, Izturis is pretty bad at the plate but better than Cabrera with the glove. Could Renteria move to 3rd? Izturis to 2nd? Who knows. I just saw that Oakland/LA/SD are the best chances for Wells. We know the A's would give up Druscherer (or whatever his name is) and SD would likely give up Loretta (but not Otsuka) and possibly Dave Roberts.

Double posting here, sorry... the more I think about it, the more I think i can see where the sox are going here.

Sean Casey to Boston for Youkilis and Arroyo. I think it would be a good deal for both teams. The best way I can describe Casey is as the closest thing I can think of to a 50/50 split between Millar and Mueller. He's got the average and a very good eye (Mueller). He's got decent power (18-20 HR a year, 90+ Rbi) (Millar). He's a good clubhouse guy (Millar and Mueller) and is always a tough out (Mueller). He's an average fielder (Millar).

I think it would be the equivalent of getting a fully-functioning Millar with a higher OBP and avg.

If the sox re-sign Damon, and pull off some sort of Glaus/Manny/Prospects deal here's the lineup:

Damon

Renteria

Ortiz

Glaus

Casey

Trot

Varitek

Lowell

Graffanino/Pedroia (I think Pedroia will step up in Spring Training and will be a likable hard working sparkplug, like he's been at every other level. He will quickly win the job.)

Not too bad. If Lowell is somehow replaced by a player like Aubrey Huff or Lyle Overbay then no skin off my back. I'm willing to part with Shoppach, Mirabelli, Arroyo or Clement... probably a few others too.

and sean casey will probaly not happen

The Pirates are close to acquiring first baseman Sean Casey from the Reds for left-hander Dave Williams, FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reports.

If this goes down, then it's safe to assume the reports of the Red Sox offering Bronson Arroyo and/or Kevin Youkilis were false. As we figured anyway. Casey is making $8.5 million next year, so Williams, a bottom-of-the-rotation lefty, is about what he's worth. Dec. 6 - 6:02 pm et

why would they want williams over arroyo or youk??

Yeah, it doesn't make any sense, which is why I'm thinking it isn't true. None of the rumors are true.

I kind of wonder what the hell the winter meetings are like. I mean, is it really just a bunch of gms walking around talking about trades? Are there actual "meetings" or do people schedule individual meetings with other people? does anyone know?

Pedroia can play SS. He did in college at least. They've been working him at 2B to leave room for Renteria and Hanley. Without Hanley or Renteria it seems that the position is his. He could be a great Red Sox Shortstop.

The Red Sox are preparing a four-year, $40 million offer to Johnny Damon, sources told the Providence Journal's Sean McAdam.

Boras and Red Sox CEO Larry Lucchino had a negotiating session late Monday night, which was productive, McAdam says. Neither the Yankees, Tigers or Cubs has gotten involved, so it's unclear who Boston is bidding against right now. Still, the Red Sox aren't going to get him any cheaper than four years and $40 million.

hes probaly going to want a 4 year 45-50 million contract since furcal got a 13 million a year contract and hes not even close to damon as a lead off hitter.

Posted
ya did the math wrong, so damon will probaly be looking for 14-15mil a year. The one good thing is that no other teams seem to be involved in signing him.

If we're really offering 4 years/40 million I promise you he will leave without a second thought. Its the same thing we did with Pedro, we dangle a little piece of meat knowing full-well that there are other pieces of meat to be had if Damon chooses. He will choose. When Furcal is getting 13 million there is no way Boras will let the sox get away without 13 mill a year.

Perhaps the sox could offer five years (which they likely won't do) 60 million, front loaded.

looks like mirabelli deal might not happen

According to an XM Radio report, the Padres and Rangers are close to a trade that would send Adam Eaton to Texas for Gerald Laird.

Unless Adrian Gonzalez is also involved, we don't like this for the Padres, and we think Laird can be a decent regular. What this does to the proposed Doug Mirabelli-for-Mark Loretta deal with the Red Sox is unclear. The Padres can't give up this much talent for catching help.

With Damon, I think if Sox were to offer him 4 years/$40-45 million, Damon would take strong consideration toward staying with Boston. He has long said he wants to stay with the Red Sox.

True with who his agent is, but I remember Boras's client in Jason Varitek was being tagged at a higher cost than what the Sox had actually ended up signing him for.

Posted

Yeah, well how many times will Boras walk away from Fenway shaking his head? Varitek is as valuable as Damon is (probably moreso), yet Damon will demand more. If he gets more the sox will have slighted Varitek and Boras knows that. The sox are in a lose-lose situation. That's why they are staying in the 10 mill a year range.

They will definitely need to do the take it or leave it thing, and I'm not sure how strong Damon's allegience will be to the sox if they "only" pay him 10 mill a year.

Ultimately, do the players or the agents have the final say in these things? When a player signs an agent does the agent suddenly become a players spokesperson (so agents can keep their reputations high with huge deals... both parties ultimately win here) or is the player in control the whole time... if damon wants 1 mill a year he can take it. It might be a mix of both, but Boras wouldn't work with players who didn't want huge checks, assuming he gets some comission for each contract. Does anyone know?

Rotoworld: The Padres are back in contention for David Wells, according to the Boston Herald's Tony Masarotti. Masarotti is speculating that the potential Wells-for-Justin Duchscherer was a favor from Billy Beane, trying to get the Padres back into it. It seems far-fetched, but so does the idea that Beane would give up Duchscherer when he currently has seven starting pitchers. Wells might be back in the deal that would send Mark Loretta to Boston for Doug Mirabelli. Working under the assumption that Scott Linebrink is untouchable, the Red Sox would also want Akinori Otsuka. The Dodgers were also supposed to be in the hunt for Wells, with Jonathan Broxton going the other way. However, Broxton is now supposed to be traded for Alfonso Soriano.

---------------------------------------------

Rotoworld: The Mariners, seeking a left-handed bat to play left field or DH, have talked to the Red Sox about Trot Nixon. Although USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported that the Mariners and Carl Everett were close to a deal, it seems the team is still shopping. An offer to Jacque Jones could be made today, and a meeting with Jeromy Burnitz was scheduled for last night. Nixon can outhit any member of that group against righties, so perhaps the Mariners would be willing to give up Julio Mateo for him. The Red Sox would surely ask for Rafael Soriano first.

-------------------------------------------------

Rotoworld: Mike Myers will likely accept arbitration should the Red Sox offer it, but he's also open to the possibility of a multiyear deal. Even though he pitches fewer innings than the top lefty relievers, Myers could argue for a 300- or 400-percent raise from the $600,000 he made last season in arbitration. If the Red Sox decline to offer arbitration, it's likely that Myers will jump to the Yankees. As for their other free agents, the Red Sox are planning to offer arbitration to Johnny Damon and Bill Mueller. Kevin Millar won't get the offer.

Braves deal Estrada for two relievers

Ken Rosenthal / FOXSports.com

The Braves have traded catcher Johnny Estrada to the Diamondbacks for right-handed relievers Lance Cormier and Oscar Villarreal, FOXSports.com has learned. The deal gives the Braves additional bullpen depth at a time when they are trying to replace closer Kyle Farnsworth, who signed a free-agent contract with the Yankees. The move also means the Diamondbacks will no longer be pursuing any of the free-agent catchers on the market. In related news, the Orioles are close to signing the Padres' free-agent catcher Ramon Hernandez.

--------------------------------------------------

The Braves are scheduled to meet Wednesday with the representatives for Nomar Garciaparra, who is drawing significant interest from nearly a dozen clubs, including the Yankees, Orioles, Blue Jays, Padres, Dodgers and Guardians. Garciaparra could play left field for the Braves and serve as a backup at shortstop and third base.

----------------------------------------------------

The Royals are pursuing a trade for Pirates left-hander Mark Redman. They are not close with the Mets on a deal for right-hander Kris Benson. The Mets want right-handed reliever Mike MacDougal, but the Royals will not make that trade. They might consider moving left-hander Jeremy Affeldt for Benson.

-----------------------------------------------------

The most interesting perk in A.J. Burnett's contract, according to a source with knowledge of the deal: Burnett's wife, Karen, is entitled to eight round-trip limousine trips per season between Toronto and her home in Bowie, Md. Karen Burnett does not like to fly. More significantly, Burnett has the right to opt out of his five-year, $55 million deal after three years  , a clause that drew immediate scorn from rival executives. "On the off-chance that he's not overpaid, he can leave," one exec said sarcastically. "Fantastic."

-----------------------------------------------------

The Blue Jays wasted no time resuming their search for offense after announcing the Burnett contract, meeting with Arn Tellem, the representative for Garciaparra. One option for the Jays would be to sign Garciaparra as a DH and acquire the Brewers' Lyle Overbay to play first base, but those moves might be difficult to swing unless they traded Shea Hillenbrand along with either Eric Hinske or Corey Koskie.

-------------------------------------------------------

The Yankees, who continue to explore deals for every center fielder on the planet, inquired about the Astros' Willy Taveras. The Astros said they were not interested.

Rumors today from Edes saying there has been discussion of a Manny to LAD for Lowe and J.D. Drew. He said it was just a rumor, (as in, don't put much into it) but I figured it was worth passing along.

That trade stinks. I have no interest in seeing lowe walk dejectedly off of the Fenway mound. He just wasn't very good his last season with Boston, depsite what he did in the playoffs.

Posted

I'm a big JD Drew fan...if the guy is healthy (which is rare) he is very good. So I wouldn't mind taking him but not Derek Lowe....I mean where would we put him??

However LA is interesting...they have some good young prospects in the farm system I understand. The Dodgers deffinitly need a boost of some kind and perhaps they would give up Cesar Izturis who could be real good down the road and 1-2 other prospects. That takes care of our SS hole if we move Renteria. I'm not sold on the idea but the Dodgers are worth investigating.

Definately with that farm system they have, i would love a trade with the dodgers, but i would rather keep manny

Latest word is Dodgers, A's, and Giants are all out of the David Wells sweepstakes, leaving the Padres as the only palatable destination for the left-hander.

Padres may insist the Sox take Woody Williams in return, although with San Diego having re-signed Trevor Hoffman, Sox may ask for Scott Linebrink in return. Dodgers thought price too steep for DW, did not want to weaken their pen.

Forget about Manny to the Dodgers. No shot.

Texas, Sox may still try to make a match on Manny.

Sox in on Milwaukee 1B Lyle Overbay, but another team appears to have the inside track.

The Edgar Renteria three-way is still very much alive and could happen tonight, but the situation is fluid.

since ducheser is out now, they need to get linebrink for wells. i want no part in woody wiliams (i think hes 41 years old and is clearly done)

With Trevor Hoffman back, the Padres can afford to give up one of their relievers for Wells. They might be able to get Boston to take Woody Williams if they put Scott Linebrink into the deal. The Red Sox aren't taking Williams to get Otsuka. ESPN's Peter Gammons speculated that the Red Sox wouldn't deal Wells until January, when most of the free agent starters were off the market.

probaly a good idea to wait awhile with wells. they shouldnt ruch a trade just because David wants to know now were he is playing next year.
