As crazy as they my sound..........

1. Let Big Papi play first base....He learned how to hit,

He can learn how to play first.

2. Sign Piazza as the DH.....Good hitter, Plus emergency

catcher.

3. Do Not Trade Manny....Him and Ortiz have a special

chemistry that should not be tinkered with.

All Manny needs is love...Love is all he needs..

Love is all he needs.

4. Sign Soriano AVG.268 HR 36 RBI 104

SB 30.... Papa Jack can teach the kid how to be more

patient at the plate. Sign Graffanino as a bench guy.

Make it lucrative enough for him to want to be in the

dugout. This is Baseball....Money Talks.

5.Offer Damon 3 years at $10 million a year with a

team option for a 4th......He loves Boston, Boston

loves him......Nice fit for both.

6. Give Youkilis his shot at third. With enough playing

time Youk could turn into a solid ball player.

7. Resign Ron (Papa Jack) Jackson, The best hitting

instructor in the AL...if not all of baseball.

8. Reevaluate the Offense...Stealing is not a crime

in baseball. ”Speed Kills...The Competition” It would

be nice to have a player on this team that could steal

30 or more bases a year and what would be even nicer

is to have an organization that would actually encourage

it. Power and Speed, Now wouldn’t that be a novelty

for Sox fans.

9. Pay Theo......and lets move on.

10. Get rid of “Wally The Green Monster” mascots

belong in college football stadiums not in baseball parks.

You don’t see a enormous headed oversized thing running

around Yankee stadium doing stupid things. Other then George.

11. Pitching....Papelbon is going to be in the starting rotation this

year no matter what, He’s got to much upside for them to keep him

in the bullpen. Wells is as good as gone and so is Arroyo. I see the

starting rotation as being, Schilling

Burnett

Clement

Wakefield

Papelbon

I also see them going after (Flash) Gordon and Kyle Farnsworth.

I also think they’ll monitor Foulke over the winter and by the beginning

of spring training pretty much know his status on the staff (If Foulke

is healthy and has his s*** somewhat together.....He’s are closer)

Personally....I don’t see Timlin coming back, Why? They lived through

the Embree meltdown this year and don’t want it to happen again.

If Mantei, W Miller and Foulke are healthy and with the addition of Burnett

and Papelbon to the rotation this could be a pretty formidable staff.

This is why the offseason is so wonderful, The possibilities are endless

What the f*** is all this nonsense? I think you've been playing WAY too much MVP Baseball with fair trades and budgets off or something - looks like you're just trying to assemble an all star team of NAMES. f*** NAMES and AGE (yeah, Piazza would be awesome - sarcasm).

Look dude, the Red Sox have been pushing for several years now toward a moneyball philosophy - in other words effective use of money rather than bloated spending on guys you've heard of.

I don't mean to make fun of you man but Sorioano? Piazza? Please! There are only 3 places the Red Sox might make a real effort to sign a big guy at - CF (Damon), SP (Burnett) and 1B (Konerko). I can realistically see all three of those not happening - but in all likelihood one will.

They sure as hell are not going to try to get Soriano, and they would be stupid to try anyway - they'd have to mortage their future by giving up prospects in a trade, and they already have a fantastic 2B prospect in the system. I don't give two shits if Pedroia is a 30/30 guy or not... dude's got intangables, excellent defense, OBP and would fit perfect in the 2 hole eventually. I can basically guarantee you Pedroia and Cora platoon this year.

First base has a couple options. Maybe they can get Konerko, but I doubt it. Its very possible they move Youkilis over there and resign Mueller... or just attempt to get another guy to play 1B... could possibly even get one in a deal for Manny - who knows.

Basically what I'm getting at is you are making the YANKEE mistake. You are evaluating baseball, what is out there, who you've seen on sportscenter, and you are trying to assemble some kind of veteran all star team because you know who they are. That is what Steinbrenner has done to the Yankees - when NY won all those championships in the 90s, it was built on their farm system, and solid role players. Once George got his hands on the team again, they started trading away their prospects for guys that they thought were the best at their position - ie assembling an all star team.

Epstein's approach is moneyball - only with some cash to spend. He looks for role players, hard nosed guys who want to get on base and drive in runs. He does this to assemble the best club while maximizing the "bang for the buck". That's why we have guys like Bill Mueller in stead of say Scott Rolen or Eric Chavez. That's worked out pretty well now hasn't it?

He wants to build the team through the farm, and through smart moves - not huge bloated contracts to over the hill veterans like Piazza, and he sure has hell has no interest in Soriano, nor should you. Strikes out way too much and is growing old VERY fast.

I can tell you what I think this team will look like, and what it should look like. And I bet you my team would beat yours. Here's what I think they should do:

1b - Youkilis

2b - Pedroia (possibly platooning with Cora)

ss - Reneria (but I'd love to trade him in 2007 to get a young outfielder and put Hanley in after that)

3b - Mueller

C - Varitek

Lf - Manny

Cf - Damon (give him the contract, but draft a young outfielder this year to come up and replace him in case the Bernie Williams effect happens in a couple years)

Rf - Trot

DH - Ortiz

SP - Schilling

SP - Burnett/Wells/somebody

SP - Clement

SP - Papelbon

SP - Wakefield/Arroyo depending

LRP - Arroyo/Wake

MRP - Bradford/whoever

MRP - Random lefty specialist

MRP - Delcarman

MRP - Hansen

SU - Timlin

CP - Foulke

Bet you a million dollars a team that looked anything like that would KILL the team you just said you wanted to put together.

well done thread, and i agree with you that the only way those trades could happen is on the mlb 2006 game. i mean hey in the game i had traded just david wells and a single a prospect to get roger clemens ;)

just for the lefty situational guy, Sox are leaning toward Mike Myers. I have no objections towards that, he held an ERA under 3 and held left handed hitters to a .151 avg. And i read recently that both Delcarmen and Hansen will start off the season with the Pawtucket Sox. I cant wait for Delcarmen, because he is a pure strikeout pitcher as well as he is a 100% Boston guy. No doubt Delcarmen will inherit the setup role when Timlin leaves, which would be im guessing in 2007.

In 2004 Sox had a great trio of Embree, Timlin and Foulke. 2005 saw that trio break up and Timlin left standing as the only one who could actually get outs, Embree released in July and Foulke turned into an injured jerk. My choices to take that "7th inning" role are Matt Mantei (a chance Sox take him back, surgery mightve done wonders), or free agents BJ Ryan, Scott Eyre

The Mariners are expected to decline their 2006 option on closer Eddie Guardado, a source told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. The move (or lack thereof) would allow Guardado to become a free agent. The team wants the veteran to return, but they'd rather he exercise a $4.25 million option rather than the franchise invoking their $6.25 million option. Eddie is coming off an outstanding season (36 saves, 2.72 ERA), and it's not difficult to think that some club would offer the 35-year-old lefty more than $4.25 million to pitch for them in 2006. In other words, we expect Guardado to test the closer-heavy market this winter, and if so, we'll have to wait and see who the M's might turn to as their closer next year.

Millar, Mueller file for free agency.

October 27, 2005

BOSTON (AP) -- First baseman Kevin Millar and third baseman Bill Mueller filed for free agency on Thursday, early moves in an offseason in which the Boston Red Sox could part with key players from their 2004 World Series championship team. Three other members of that club, center fielder Johnny Damon and relievers Mike Timlin and Mike Myers, also are eligible to file. So are first baseman John Olerud, second baseman Tony Graffanino and reliever Matt Mantei, who all joined the team before or during last season.

Millar and Mueller joined the Red Sox as free agents in 2003 but are not the team's top priorities. Millar struggled much of the year, hitting only nine homers, and Mueller would cost them more than backup Kevin Youkilis, who has split the last two seasons between the Red Sox and the minors. Millar hit 25 homers in 2003 but faded in 2005 to his worst season with Boston, hitting .272 with 50 RBIs. He was 1-for-3 with one RBI in two games in this year's AL division series in which the Red Sox were swept in three games by the Chicago White Sox.

Mueller led the AL with a .326 batting average in 2003 and hit .295 with 10 homers and 62 RBIs in 2005. He was 0-for-11 in the series against Chicago.

Piazza files for free agency; Mets decline Graves option

October 27, 2005

NEW YORK (AP) -- Mike Piazza was among 10 New York Mets who filed for free agency Thursday on the first possible day. Piazza who has been with the team since 1998, is likely to leave the Mets to sign with an American League team, where he can become a designated hitter. A 12-time All-Star, his skills have declined substantially in recent years.

Also filing were closer Braden Looper, pitcher Steve Trachsel, second baseman Miguel Cairo, relievers Roberto Hernandez and Felix Heredia, first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz, infielder Jose Offerman, outfielder Gerald Williams and catcher Mike DeFelice. Looper, Trachsel, Mientkiewicz and Heredia  filed conditionally, pending decisions on 2006 options. New York also declined Danny Graves' $5 million option, electing to pay the reliever a $500,000 buyout.

MONEYBALL, The catch phrase for the sabermetric baseball generation.

Let’s find players with high on-base percentages and slugging percentages

and forget about the fundamentals like stolen bases or putting the ball in play.

It’s more important to avoid an out then it is to get a hit. Brilliant, Lets let a guy

like Michael Lewis who has spent his career (not in baseball) but writing about

Wall Street investors change the face of baseball.

Look at Billy Beane and the Oakland A’s good winning percentage in the regular season,

But zip in the post-season. What has MONEYBALL done for the A’s? Beane is one

of moneyballs biggest proponents (I thank the baseball gods that he turned down the job

in Boston when they offered it to him) if he ran the show we still wouldn’t have won a

World Series. But, If you believe that this philosophy is the wave of the future then get

ready for some very mediocre play by the Sox until the reinforcements arrive from the

farm and when they do arrive are they going to be everything they’re cracked up to be?

I’ve followed The Red Sox for 50 years and I’ve heard name after name come out of the

farm system and attached to it was the same speculation every time “This kid is going to be

great” names like Brian Rose, Aaron Sele, Frankie Rodriguez, Sam Horn, John Marzano,

Bobby Ojeda, Scott Copper, Casey Fossom and the list goes on and on..

Unfortunately when they come up from the farm they don’t come with a guarantee.

Clemens, Rice, Lynn, Oil Can, Fisk, Yaz, V-Tec to name just a few that came out of the

system made it. But I can assure you that for every one that made it 2 or 3 didn’t. It’s

a gamble a 50/50 shot at best.

Look at Dustin Pedroia the kid was hitting .324 in Portland AA then he hits .255 with the

Pawsox. What makes you think he’s anywhere near ready for the majors with less then a

full year under his belt in AAA ball?

Abe Alvarez ERA 4.85 143 hits in a 144 innings in AAA. Lester, Sanchez, Hensen are still in AA. Yes the kids can bring smoke, But it’s nothing the hitters around the league haven’t seen before. Do you really think a 97 MPH fast ball by a kid (Like Hensen) that was in AA ball less then 9 months ago is going to intimidate a hitter like Sheffield or Konerko or A-Rod or any other big thumper in the AL.

If you do your sadly mistaken. They’ll hit him like a Red-Headed Stepchild.

Lets just hope your “bang for the buck” doesn’t go “pop for the pennys” and that Theo can find those hard nosed role players. If your trying to tell me that moneyball had anything to do with us winning the World Series? Well, Son that’s just plain bull-s***. We won the ALCS and The Series because we got HOT at just the right time. We won 8 games in a row....When it counted.

Cf - Damon (give him the contract, but draft a young outfielder this year to come up and replace him in case the Bernie Williams effect happens in a couple years)

we drafted the CF Jacoby Ellsbury out of Oregon State last year in the 1st round. He's the 11th best prospect in our system per soxprospects.com. ETA Mid-2007

Scouting Report: Ellsbury was on of the best players in the NCAA in 2005.* He is very fast, plays excellent defense, and has shown a great ability to get on base. Decent gap power for a centerfielder who projects as a lead-off hitter. Has often been compared to Johnny Damon. Also said to be a team leader.

In Lowell this past year he played in 35 games and he hit .317, .418 OBP, 1 HR, 20 SB's.

Posted
I can see Brandon Moss (if not traded by then) is a viable option to take over right field in 2007 or 2008. agree with "yankeessuck" that Jacoby Ellisbury was drafted and is being groomed to play in center field, ive seen him play in August in which he had a 3 hit game, 2 SBs, and made a hell of a diving catch for a fly ball. I can only expect so far good things for him.

yeaaa... but Abe Alvarez is high on the list of trade-able prospects this offseason. Lester, Sanchez and hansen we know they played in AA last season. But its not like they will jump right to the majors on opening day. Those 3 will most likely stay most of the season in AAA (lester and Hansen could get calls up in July or August). Look at papelbon who had started the 05 season in AA and what he was able to do, 96/97 fastballs, and yes he did do some intimidating.

Okay, here comes my ideal 2005...if possible...maybe. And this is if Manny needs to be traded, which seems likely.

Trades:

Arroyo for Huff.

Wells for Craig Breslow and Dave Roberts (I think they still have him, he may be a FA, try to get Clay Hensley too)

Manny for Ervin Santana and Darin Erstad

1B - Huff

2B - Cora/Pedroia

SS - Edgar

3B - Youk

C - VTek

RF - Trot

CF - Erstad

LF - Roberts (or get Giles, that'd be good too)

DH - Papi

Bench - Cora/Pedroia, Mirabelli, Olerud

SP - Schilling

SP - Wakefield

SP - Papelbon

SP - Clement

SP - Ervin Santana

RP - Foulke

RP - Timlin

RP - Hansen

RP - Dinardo

RP - Delcarmen

RP - Breslow

Get some more bench players, bolster the bullpen. Who knows, just throwing some ideas around.

notable news for other teams

With the emergence of Dan Johnson, the Oakland A's have declined the option on 1st baseman Scott Hatteberg, making him a free agent this offseaso. He could still be kept on to be the backup.

Former Met's manager Bobby Valentine is the front-runner to manage the Devil Rays in 2006.

The good news is that the Padres and free agent closer Trevor Hoffman are talking. The bad news is that they are not expected to be close on contract terms. According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Padres have offered up a two-year deal worth $10 million. the 38-year old Hoffman is expected to counter with three seasons at $25-27 million. "I'm a little disappointed by what has transpired to this point," Hoffman explained.

Pitcher John Thomson's $4.75 million option for 2006 was exercised Tuesday by the Atlanta Braves. Thomson, a right-handed starter, was 4-6 with a 4.47 ERA in 17 games this year. He missed about three months with a strained flexor tendon in his right middle finger. In 2004, Thomson's first season with the Braves, he was 14-8 with a 3.73 ERA. Atlanta could have bought out the option for $500,000.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Closer Braden Looper's $5.5 million option was declined Monday by the New York Mets, who will pay the reliever a $250,000 buyout. New York also exercised right-hander Steve Trachsel's $2.5 million option and declined a $4 million option on first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz, who gets a $450,000 buyout. "Even though we declined Braden's option, we still plan on having conversations with his agent,'' Mets general manager Omar Minaya said. Looper went 4-7 with a 3.94 ERA and 28 saves in 36 chances and had arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder on Oct. 3, the day after the season ended. The Mets might decide not to re-sign Looper and land another closer. Trachsel missed most of the season following back surgery in March and went 1-4 with a 4.14 ERA.

Mientkiewicz, acquired from Boston last winter after the Mets failed to sign free-agent Carlos Delgado, hit .240 with 11 homers and 29 RBIs. New York also activated outfielder Mike Cameron, right-handers Bartolome Fortunato and Tyler Yates, left-hander Felix Heredia and infielder Jeff Keppinger from the 60-day disabled list. Also Monday, infielder Jose Offerman filed for free agency.

Agent Dan Lozano said the Mets have expressed interest in free agent Tony Graffanino as a utilityman. There will be no shortage of teams wanting Graffanino as a reserve. He'll probably look around for a starting job first.

i think this past season should have proved enough Tony can be a reliable starter. hell even for some reason the royals of all teams had him be a utility man. He's capable of being a .300 hitter, not one to hit HR's but can drive in RBIs when there is RISP, and errors come far part from one another.

Now that Eddie Guardado is back in Seattle...that crosses off a potential lefty...

The more I look at this the less likely it will be for us to grab BJ Ryan or Billy Wagner. These guys will be real expensive and after looking over the list....lefty relievers are pretty limited. Perhaps we could get away with another righty but one who can dominate....kinda the way the Angels are set up with K-Rod, Shields, and Donnally/Escobar.

I looked a little at Octavio Dotel...he was supposed to be out for the entire 2006 season but apparently his surgery went so well that the Doc thinks he can return for spring training 2006 as long as he keeps up with his rehab.....chances are (like most guys with this surgery now) his arm strength will be even better and hit higher than 94-95 mph once his rehab is finished. Most teams may pass cause of the risk/reward chances but the Red Sox like to take those gambles.....this is one I would think about. He could probably be signed for real cheap.

We know Mike Timlin will be alright and with some time Craig Hansen and Manny Delcarmen are our best chance for a stopper. I would also think about resigning Matt Mantei who should be healthy and has a real live arm....between Keith Foulke, Matt Mantei and Octavio Dotel....one or two of them is bound to work.....if none of them do then we would have to turn to the young guys sooner.....which might be just fine

Posted
Why not trevor hoffman for a couple of years as a stop gap until Craig Hansen can take over as closer. Have hansen setting up for two years learning the ropes.

I thought about that but with the money he wants...might as well just go after Billy Wagner or BJ Ryan....old man Hoffman wants more than $7 million a year...hmmm....thats a much bigger risk cause if he gets injured or really slows down...now you are out of money

these guys should just hang up their cleats

That platinum blonde in the lobby of the Hyatt Grand Champions Resort was none other than free-agent second baseman Bret Boone, whose new hair color is emblematic of his desire to open another chapter in his career. Boone, 36, met with the general managers of the Cardinals and Royals, two teams that need second basemen. The Cardinals, progressing slowly in their negotiations with free agent Mark Grudzielanek, also have talked to the Rangers about a possible deal for second baseman Alfonso Soriano.

The Cubs' signing of free-agent Neifi Perez to a two-year, $5 million contract is one reason the Cardinals are at an impasse with Grudzielanek, who is superior to Perez offensively. Boone batted only .221 with the Mariners and Twins last season, hitting seven homers in 326 at-bats. However, he has embarked on an extensive off-season conditioning program with the goal of reviving his career.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Outfielder Sammy Sosa, another player in need of a revival, is attracting zero interest as a free agent. Sosa, 37, likely will need to sign a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training if he wishes to remain in the majors. He is 12 homers short of 600.

I know helton makes a lot of $$$ (12.5 mil), but I think he'd be awesome at Fenway. He hits the ball well to left/left-center. He's a gold glove caliber 1st baseman, last year he made his first ever trip to DL, last year was first year since 99 he didn't make allstar team. People will argue he has inflated numbers because he plays 1/2 games in Colorado, but I think he could match numbers hitting at Fenway. Plus, (and mainly), Colorado might be more willing to move him now than ever because of his off-year, salary, and the fact that they're terrible and will always look for (pitching) prospects. Any thoughts?

I don't like Helton for one reason, his contract. He's due $16.6M for the next 5 years and it tops out in 2011 when he is due $19.9M. Then there is a team option for $23M or player option for $4.6M in 2012. No thanks.

He could.

I think if he really wants to go to San Deigo, and the Red Sox really want Javy, then a 3-way could be worked out.

Posted

Well the sox would have to give up a little more than wells to get javy, but yeah its a possibility in a three way.

San Diego could send Arizona a prospect and dave roberts maybe and recieve David Wells, and Boston would get Javy and maybe send a kelly shoppach or abe alvarez if the deal needs anything else to get put away. I heard right now though that san diego would be willing to do a dave roberts and prospect deal for Wells right now. I don't see why not Javy is good but this won't be a randy johnson type of deal. Javy wasnt the headliner of that deal anyways, it was the prospects.

not that this is really important, but it is sox related:

Denney Tomori, who failed to make the Red Sox last spring and spent the year in the minors, has chosen to return to Japan.

I cannot say that this is a shocker.

I must say though, his 5.03 ERA in AAA was better than I expected from him this year.
