DETROIT - Manager Alan Trammell was fired Monday by the Detroit Tigers, one day after the team finished 28 games out of first place in the AL Central.

The Tigers went 71-91 this season and compiled a 184-302 record in three seasons under Trammell, a former star shortstop for Detroit. He had one year left on his contract.

The Tigers lost an AL-record 119 games in his first season as manager, then the team took a step toward respectability with a 72-90 record last year. With a lineup and bullpen that seemed upgraded, the Tigers thought they had a chance to have a winning season in 2005 for the first time since 1993.

"You will not find a more dedicated, hard-working and respected individual that cares more about the Tigers and his coaching staff," team president Dave Dombrowski said in a statement. "However, for the Tigers to reach the next level, I feel it is appropriate to make a change at this time."

I'm not surprised about the Tigers firing trammell. anyone remember when he pulled his starting pitcher who was going 8 solid innings, but for some reason he sent out the bullpen when the guy was just like 90 pitches deep. Papi took the closer deep to tie up the game. Sox put up a 7 spot in the 10th to win the game

im surprised Leyland was hired so soon.

I'm not... since, I think, the Tigers GM was the Marlins GM when Leyland won the World Series... I figured that Leyland is the reason they fired Trammel.

Yea I wasnt aware of the Fla/Det association with the exec (I dont know if it was the GM or another exec, but you could be right, it could be the GM) until Paige and Skip Bayless (I know I misspelled that, sorry Skip) were talking about it on Cold Pizza this morning.

Yeah, I'm not sure exactly what position the guy is or was with the Marlins -- but I'd imagine it was someone with a significant amount of say in this kind of stuff. Leyland being hired so quickly along with that guys previous association with him would leave me to believe Leyland was, if not the only, the main reason for Trammell being fired.

Another manager who won't return with his previous team: Macha

Yea that should be an interesting situation. He rejected the offer by Beane, I would think he ends up in Pittsburgh, his home town. But Gammons strongly believes Jim Tracy goes to Pittsburgh. I've heard Art Howe's name mentioned with the Pirates job as well. I think it would be interesting if Howe was considered to go back to Oakland, but on Baseball Tonight they made a good point about how Beane would unlikely hire a big-name manager as he "wants to be the star" there.

Should be a fun offseason with all the managerial changes.

Yeah I'm not too surprised either...given the previous connection with Dave Dombrowski and Leyland previously winning Florida's 1st WS, he (Dombrowski) needed to make a move asap since Leyland was gonna be in the running for pretty much every open managerial spot out there.

Btw, i think tracey will get a serious look from pittsburgh since i believe he's from around there, and like leyland, was looking to manage somewhere closer to home.
