i hope this rain goes away, if a double header is done tomorrow. it will possibly change the rotation against the yankees...

Home is where the Sox thrive

Toronto (76-79) at Boston (91-64), 7:05 p.m. ET

As the Red Sox embark on this critical seven-game homestand to finish their season, captain Jason Varitek hopes that the Fenway faithful will operate at pulsating tones. "I hope that we can generate that energy from our fans no matter what the situation is, no matter what the scoreboard says, that we generate that extra man on the field from our fans to give us that push," said the veteran catcher. All year long, the Red Sox have been a good team at home, bringing a 50-24 Fenway record into Monday's game against the Blue Jays.

Curt Schilling, who has pitched well in two of his last three starts, takes the ball for Boston in the opener of this four-game series. The Blue Jays have been tough on the Sox this season, taking nine of the first 14 meetings.

Pitching matchup

TOR: RHP David Bush

• 5-10, 4.45 ERA in 2005

• 0-2, 11.70 ERA vs. BOS in 2005

BOS: RHP Curt Schilling

• 7-8, 5.89 ERA in 2005

• 1-0, 9.00 ERA vs. TOR in 2005

Player to watch

Look for a bust-out series from David Ortiz, who hasn't driven in a run in his last four games.

Quotable

"We're going home and we have a lot business to tend to. But at home, we hope to be a force. We have been and we expect to." -- Terry Francona

Quick hits

The Red Sox finished the season with a 41-40 record on the road. ... Manny Ramirez has bashed five homers in the last five games. ... Ortiz, Johnny Damon and Ramirez are all above the 100-run mark. ... With 95 runs, Edgar Renteria has a good chance to slip into triple digits. ... Ramirez (135 RBIs) is inching closer to Ortiz (140).

Blue Jays, Red Sox rained out

September 26, 2005

BOSTON (AP) -- The scheduled game between Toronto and Boston was postponed by rain Monday night, forcing the Red Sox to play a day-night doubleheader in the middle of a tight pennant race. The game will be made up Tuesday at 1:05 p.m., and the teams will play again at 7:05 p.m. as scheduled -- so Boston must rearrange its pitching plans for the week. The Red Sox entered Monday tied with the New York Yankees atop the AL East with seven games to go. Curt Schilling, slated to start Monday night, will now pitch Tuesday night against the Blue Jays and then in the regular-season finale against New York at Fenway Park on Sunday -- instead of Saturday.

Tim Wakefield, originally scheduled to pitch Tuesday night, will start the day game for the Red Sox on Tuesday. He will take place of what wouldve been the pen-ultimate Schilling vs Johnson matchup of Fox Saturday baseball, it would have been the first time they opposed each other in the same game.

Dont despair sox fans, here's some positive thoughts

In need of good news this morning? Consider: After facing David Bush (31.50 ERA at Fenway) this afternoon, the Red Sox face three lefthanded Toronto starters in Gustavo Chacin (12-9, 3.66 ERA), Ted Lilly (9-11, 5.72 ERA), and Scott Downs (4-3, 4.35 ERA). Opposing lefties, in 23 starts at Fenway this season, are 5-10 with a 6.59 ERA. The Sox have won their last nine games in the Fens against lefty starters, last losing was back on July 18 to Tampa Bay's Scott Kazmir. Lefthanded slugger David Ortiz leads all Sox hitters vs. lefty starters at Fenway in average (.383), home runs (4), and RBIs (13).

oddly enough this is Tim Wakefield's first start against the Blue Jays this season

Wake's got the ball doing the two-step today. It's dancing all over the place. I'd love for him to give us 8 or a CG so all double-dip stuff goes out the window.

best offense: edgar is coming around more with hitting 2 doubles (first one wouldve been a HR if not for the wind) and he scored 2 of the 3 runs--david ortiz got 2 RBIs to run his total to the majors leading 142---Manny with his 136th RBI--Damon had gotten the game off with a single to start the 1st inning runs

dishonorable mention: Trot Nixon, Bill Mueller, John Olerud and Doug Mirabelli going a combined 0-13 with 1 walk and 4 Ks

best defense: Alex f***ing cora with his game ending dive ;)--Bill Mueller doing his campaign for 3rd base gold glove award, John Olerud providing defense at 1st, Manny's underhanded eyes closed catch--and yes i know edgar got his 30th error, but still it didnt look like he shouldve been given that, he was still playing clean D for the whole game

best pitching: our ace and game 1 of the playoffs starter Tim Wakefield going 7 strong innings with 1 unearned run on 3 hits, 1 walk, and 6 Ks---he now leads the team in wins (16), innings pitched, ERA (3.96), strikeouts (150)---Jonathan Papelbon is our 8th inning man, even with runners on corners and 1 out he kept his cool and got the last 2 outs---Timlin delivered a 12 pitch inning to close the door and earn his 12th save of the season

I will say this, Papi is definitely our MVP and should be the AL MVP but man, Wakefield deserves a shitload of credit for his outstanding second half. Wake should get as much, if not more, credit than Matt Clement got for carrying the rotation in the first half of the season cause he's given Tito the innings an ace should and because of that, has been the bullpen's best friend giving them a rest when at times, they've really needed one
