Lilly Takes on Former Mates in Opener in Hopes of Playing Spoiler

Toronto (75-77) at New York (89-63), 7:05 p.m. ET

The Blue Jays split their last series, and 11 of their last 12 games have been decided by two runs or less. They'll try to keep that streak going in New York, where they've played to a 3-4 record this season. The three-game series starts Friday, and once it's done, Toronto will head to Boston for its final four road games of the season. Ted Lilly takes the ball in first game of the set against the Yankees. He'll try to fix his season's stats against his former team; the Yanks have knocked Lilly around twice, and they'll counter with an impressive pitcher. Shawn Chacon has pitched well for New York -- especially against Toronto, a team he's dominated twice this season.

The Blue Jays are 5-8 against New York this year, but they have an extremely similar record against American League East opponents. Toronto is 35-32 against division rivals, while New York is 35-29. The Yankees are the only AL East team with a winning record against the Jays this season.

Pitching matchup

TOR: LHP Ted Lilly

• 9-10, 5.46 ERA in 2005

• 1-1, 8.59 ERA vs. NYY in 2005

NYY: RHP Shawn Chacon

• 5-3, 3.25 ERA with NYY in 2005

• 2-0, 1.20 ERA vs. TOR in 2005

Lilly did get a win last week against the Yanks going into the 7th inning giving up 3 Runs (2 ER0 on 6 hits, 1 walk and striking out 6. hopefully he will get a 2nd win in a row against his former team

I hope so. Otherwise, my playoff tickets are looking pretty dismal.

Ive always liked Lilly going back to when we had him. But I have a good feeling about tonight ;)

Were going to work early on Lilly, and I really do not think the Jays can score over 5 on the new Chacon, so a few more runs this could be a no game..........untill we turn it to our bullpen that is :thumbdown :dunno:

Jim Kaat made the point that the Jays have danced around alot of hitters counts tonight. I think the reason why is that the Jays are using the Yankee agression at the plate against them. They have thrown ALOT of breaking balls in 3-1, 2-0, 2-1 counts. In that inning when the Yankees had the bases loaded A-Rod got a 3-0 breaking ball and he chased it. How many times do you see someone get a 3-0 breaking ball esp with Gary Sheffield on deck. They need to work guys like Walker and soon to be League the way they worked Lilly. Take pitches and make them work themself into trouble. Aside from that the Jays have done a good job keeping the Yankees at 4-0.

wow I didnt think it was possible for someone who has been so bad/mediocre throughout his career to make this kind of turnaround, but Chacon has been FANTASTIC. Hard to believe considering how bad he was earlier in the season.

Any day now we're going to hear the steroid accusations due to the fact that he has made such a ridiculous improvement from earlier in the season when he was with the Rockies where he was horrific.

Well it WAS (is, I guess, still standing) Coors...not exactly the best place to gauge stats either way.

Take a number, Mr. Chacon...the allegation line is kinda long right now.

Im surprised that he hasnt been bumped to the front of the line. We know how Sox fans feel about Yankees who make rapid improvements in the middle of a season.
