Well this is just an idea....

One of the most difficult things is trying to predict a trade. However, I think this one could set up nicely. The Texas Rangers need to sign Teixeira to a long term deal which means this must be his last season of his contract. As awesome as he is the Rangers are loaded with power hitters and desperately need pitching. Theo should deffinitly jump in and try to work out a trade. We have 7 possible starting pitchers (depending on the situation with Miller and Wells) along with an excellent farm system for pitching. If the Red Sox can somehow dump off Manny and his salary for someone like Beltran then this looks like a move Theo should look into as a replacement bat. Not to mention it could free up money to get a contract worked out with Teixeira and solve our 1B headache for a long time. Obviously he would come at a high price for players and cost a lot of money but I think he would be worth it. If this was the case I would consider letting the free agents walk and going with a semi youth movement.

yes he would be a great fit as a Red Sox---prospects such as anibel sanchez, abe alvarez, and kelly shoppach i can see as the odd men out

Jon Lester is of course untouchable and should start making several appearances next season, him and Papelbon could someday be like what Pedro and Schil were in 2004

I would have to agree with that. I think Lester, Papelbon, and Hansen are the core future of this team. A righty starter and a lefty starter with a dominate closer. But that leaves people like Sanchez, Arroyo, Foulke, maybe even Matt Clement who will have two years left on his contract, Alvarez, Buccholz, etc. I'm sure mixing and matching could be put together but I deffinitly think we have the depth to possibly figure something out.

I think the Sox are going to take a real hard look at Abreu in winter ball this year and wherever he plays in the farm system next year before they jump into a big contract with a premiere 1B.

That could be very well be the case. I don't know a thing about the guy. The few stats I saw look good but that doesn't mean a thing in MLB. We shall see though he would certainly be a nice suprise.

Teixeira's stock is continuing to climb

First In a series on a position-by-position breakdown

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols has been a menace to National League pitching for five years now. This off-season, he could cause headaches for the Rangers as they attempt to sign Mark Teixeira to a long-term contract. Teixeira is finishing his third full season in the majors. Pujols had played three full seasons in the majors when, before the 2004 season, he signed a seven-year, $100 million contract with the Cardinals. The Rangers, who have already begun holding meetings to prepare for their off-season business, will likely look at that as a ceiling for what Teixeira should make.

Agent Scott Boras, ever a tough and demanding negotiator, is likely to look at it as a 2-year-old contract. The Players Association wants to see the salaries for premium players to begin escalating again. The line of scrimmage has been drawn. "I have no idea what will happen," Teixeira said. "It's something my agent and I will sit down and talk about. I know I'm here for three more years."

At stake is the long-term future for someone who has developed into a Most Valuable Player candidate and who Hicks said could become the Rangers' franchise player. Teixeira, 25, went into Tuesday's game with the Los Angeles Angels hitting .295 with 106 runs scored, 41 home runs and 132 RBI. Teixeira is eligible for arbitration after this and the next two off-seasons, then can become a free agent after 2008. As much as the Rangers dislike having arbitration hearings against players, the real issue is keeping Teixeira beyond 2008.

"We'll see what happens," Teixeira said. "They haven't offered me a contract yet." Those talks are coming sometime this winter. Teixeira and the Rangers might talk about money, but they won't talk about position. Teixeira met with the Rangers immediately after last season and told them he would be willing to switch positions if it would help the club. That offer expired many midnights ago. "I think I'm a first baseman for the rest of my career," Teixeira said. The Rangers are fine with that. Teixeira has not only fulfilled offensive expectations but, despite being drafted as a third baseman, has developed into a Gold Glove-caliber first baseman.

"I've had a front row seat, and I can't imagine anybody having a better year defensively than Mark," Buck Showalter said. That does not bode well for Adrian Gonzalez, who hit .338 with 18 home runs and 65 RBI at Triple A Oklahoma but has been confined mainly to designated hitter at the major league level. He has been used in 26 games at DH, including Tuesday night, and only eight at first base. His path is blocked, and there are no plans to move him to another position. A trade is the most logical course of action. Phil Nevin sits on the bench because the Rangers are trying to boost Gonzalez's trade value. But his .220 batting average is not helping matters. There is only one first baseman in Arlington and that's Teixeira. The Rangers want to make that last, but it won't be easy.

I'm pretty sure that was a joke. Also, I am pretty sure the Sox would never pay him 7 years 100 million dollars. Just a hunch, but I doubt they would.

The prior deal is in the works and we are also in the midst of dealing for Eric Chavez and Albert Pujols.

Yo I hear we might pick up Johan Santana and Derek Lee too.

From the sound of things, Texas is looking to unload some lumber for pitching. The only problem is that Soriano is the one they are shopping. Buck doesn't like him, so they are trying to get what they can for him this year because he will walk as a FA next year. Texas can spend some money, so I'd be surprised if Teixeira doesn't stay there with a big contract when he is a FA.
