Boston (87-63) at Tampa Bay (63-88), 7:15 pm EDT

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) -- If the Boston Red Sox are to end their slide and secure a third straight playoff berth, they will need Curt Schilling to establish some consistency.

The veteran righthander makes a critical start Tuesday in the second of three games against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays .

Schilling (6-8, 6.20 ERA) has struggled since returning to Boston's starting rotation in late-August, going 1-3 with a 5.91 ERA in five starts. While he occassionally has flashed his winning form, including a clutch performance at Yankee Stadium on September 10, the 38-year-old has yet to provide the Red Sox with much confidence.

In seven of eight starts this year, Schilling has allowed at least nine hits. In a 6-2 loss to Oakland on Thursday, he was reached for four runs and a season high-tying 11 hits in 6 2/3 innings.

In two starts against Tampa Bay this year, Schilling has given up 11 runs in 13 innings. He is not alone in his struggles as Boston has dropped seven of 12 and owns a one-half game lead over the New York Yankees in the American League East.

The Red Sox led by four games after Schilling defeated the Yankees on September 10.

The Devil Rays gave David Wells an early exit and held on for an 8-7 win in Monday's opener. Jorge Cantu and Aubrey Huff had two RBI apiece for Tampa Bay and David Ortiz drove in four runs for Boston.

Seth McClung (6-10, 6.61) gets the call for the Devil Rays , who are seven wins shy of matching the franchise record for a season. McClung gave up seven runs in just 5 1/3 innings of a 9-5 loss to New York on Thursday.

We are due. The offense showed some life last night so I expect some more runs tonight. ;) It's up to Schill to keep 'em in it. Only 11 to go after tonight.

Ok, 3-0 to start the game. Let's go Schill!

The breakdown by me on Schilling:

He tries to establish his fastball the first time through the order. If it's good, he'll have a fine start. If it's not right, he'll get lit up the first time through (unless it's against the Yankees :D ).

Boy that Cantu kid might be the best 2nd basemen in the AL. Soriano is good but he cant field and he K's too much. Roberts has had a great year also but he has fallen off. I know I'm missing someone else.

Yeah, Cantu gets paid like... 5 dollars an hour too, haha.

A couple notes from the Yankee game:

Men on 1st and 2nd, nobody out in the 2nd for the Yankees. (Two fielding errors)

Brian Roberts has a NASTY arm injury in the 2nd and his season is possibly done, that injury looked NASTY.

John Maine has just been taken out.

5-3 Yanks

That arm looks broken. It looked like it was just hanging.
