Wade Miller will meet today with Dr. Craig Morgan, a shoulder specialist, to discuss whether Miller should commit to having his labrum surgically repaired. All indications suggest that Miller is leaning in that direction. While Miller has had MRIs on his throwing shoulder, the extent of the repairs, the length of time he'd miss, and his chances at a full recovery won't be clear until the procedure actually takes place. If Miller undergoes surgery, the Sox most likely would non-tender him, as Houston did after he missed the second half of last season

Yeah well I've been pulling for Wade, because when he's healthy I think he's one of the top pitchers in the game, but if he's not going to be healthy we need to get someone who will be. I don't really see a need to go out and sign any FA pitchers to take his place because as long as Wells comes back I think the staff will be full, especially with the growth of some of our young pitchers.

I don't think we need to become the Yankees and start signing big names just for the sake of doing it. I'd much rather let Papelbon start next year than go out and sign Burnett.

lets just say Wells will take up his 2nd year of his contract, I think it be cool to see a 6 man rotation for 2006. Arroyo said in a recent interview he'll only go to the bullpen in emergency situations but he wants to remain a starter

1. Schilling

2. Wakefield

3. Wells

4. Clement

5. Arroyo

6. Papelbon

I would like to see Bronson get dealt this offseason. He's low cost, mid-level talent which will be attractive to some small market teams that need pitching. With Damon's resigning up in the air, Manny possibly leaving, Gabe's return questionable, and Trot annually on the mend, I think Bronson could land us a much needed outfielder.

I don't like dealing Arroyo. Aside from his momentarily lapses of concentration and walking three batters in an inning, he does have some nasty breaking stuff and seems to be maturing as a pitcher. I don't think Papelbon is completely solid yet as a starter. As proved last night, hitters are starting to zone in on him, and he can't just hurl heat all season. He needs to master his splitter, which he only learned to pitch this year.

The reason he got hit hard last night, was because he didnt have his best stuff, he usually throws 93-95 rising, last night it was 90-92 and flat. Every pitcher has a night like this where his stuff isnt great ala Pedro, Schilling even Wells as we saw tonight. Paps has a great future this year with Boston as a step-up guy, and the years to come as our ace.

what about his performance just last week going 3 scoreless innings against the Blue Jays allowing just 1 hit and a walk? one bad performance doesnt reflect he is now getting hit hard, remember the first batter got on because johnny had another tough time catching a flyball (shoulvde been an out)

No one is doubting Papelbon's ability to come in relief. I just don't see how he goes a whole season as a starter tossing heat and hoping he finds command of the splitter. This season he has been bounced back and forth from a starter to a reliever, and his development as either doesn't seem to be a big concern. I also have doubts about Wells coming back. There's no way he doesn't wind up on the DL at age 43 next year.

Papelbon was only "bounced back and forth from starter to reliever" is that the team needed him to make some spot starts when wade miller was shut done for a couple of weeks, then 2 more starts when he was shut down completely. They kept him on board because of the stability he could and has brought to the bullpen. He wasnt bounced back and forth because they had any doubts or whether. Even Remy and Don said they will be surprised if hes not in the rotation for 2006

Pitching-wise, in my opinion the most urgent issue is to get a "real" closer, not another starting pitcher or replace an existing one.

Mike Timlin might not be able to handle this role for too long.

Mike Timlin will handle it just fine for rest of the season and into the playoffs--Craig Hansen as Remy said could take on the role of permanent closer as early as during 2006, Billy Wagner is demanding upwards of up to $30 million, Theo will not go for that

I'd much rather have Hansen as our closer over payi 30 mill for Wagner. Not because of the age and moiney diff. but I think Hansen will prove to be more ffective than Wagner, maybe even next season, this is all however on hold until we see how Foulke does next season.
