First the Union defends Kenny Rogers, now this? boo Union, very much boo

Union files grievance over Ponson

September 8, 2005

NEW YORK (AP) -- The baseball players' association filed a grievance Thursday claiming the Baltimore Orioles improperly terminated the contract of pitcher Sidney Ponson.

The Orioles released Ponson and voided the remainder of his three-year contract on Sept. 1, a week after he was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Ponson was making $7.5 million this season under a $22.5 million, three-year contract, meaning he was still owed about $1.3 million. He was due to be paid $10 million next year, with $3 million of his 2006 salary deferred and scheduled to be paid in equal installments on June 1, 2007, and June 1, 2008.

The union claims the Orioles didn't have just cause for their actions. Unless settled, the case will be heard by arbitrator Shyam Das.

um because he keeps getting arrested, and obviously has a problem with the drink??!! I think Orioles want to cleanup their look after having in 2005 a drunk Ponson, and two juiced guys Sosa and "Truthful Raffy, Period"

still... you can't fire someone for something they did outside of work - unless it says so in the signed contract.

Note: see Denny Neagle in Colorado...

Apparently they can (release said player) and have done so successfully.

Neagle was owed about 18 million on his contract when released, the Rockies settled and Neagle got 16 million. 2 million is alot to pay for a hooker but it's way cheaper than 18 million.

That really bothers me. Sosa never has been linked, admitted to, or been caught using steriods. People throwing stuff out there like that really gets me angry.

Dude he looks like he did his rookie year and he couldn't hit water if he fell off a boat. Come on now.

Note: dont act like its just me saying that. Its been said many a times on ESPN, Fox sports, during basesball games, you name it really.

In 1991 with the White sox he hit 10 HRs, in 1992 with the Cubs he hit 8 HRs. then all of a sudden in 1993 (same year Raffy started hot hitting 37 of his own) Sosa belted 33 balls out of the park!! He never hit under 20 HRs until this season
