Hideo Nomo had his strongest start in his push for a call-up to the Yankees, tossing 7 1/3 scoreless innings for Triple-A Columbus in a 5-0 win over Toledo. Nomo (2-3) struck out 10 and allowed only three hits and a walk in his seventh start for the Yankees' top minor-league affiliate. He has a 3.62 ERA since joining the Clippers on July 27 but hadn't dominated opposing hitters before facing the Mud Hens. Nomo, released by Tampa Bay earlier this season, retired 12 consecutive batters between Don Kelly's single in the second and Kevin Hooper's single in the sixth. He walked Dewayne Wise in the first and was replaced after Jason Smith singled with one out in the eighth.

Nomo's effort kept the Clippers in the race for the wild-card spot in the International League playoffs with three regular-season games left. They entered play Friday one game behind Indianapolis. Columbus scored five times in the first off Wilfredo Ledezma (4-3), who was pulled after issuing five walks and two hits without getting an out.
