Mariners seek a split

NY Yankees (75-57) at Seattle (56-76)

4:35 pm EDT Thu Sep 1, 2005

Starting Pitchers

NYY

Jaret Wright: 4-2 Record, 6.39 ERA, 25 Ks, 15 Walks, 7 HRs

SEA

Joel Pi?eiro: 5-9 Record, 5.78 ERA, 80 Ks, 47 Walks, 22 HRs

Jaret Wright is still undefeated since his return from the disabled list, thanks in large part to some much-needed offensive support his last time out. Wright hopes to bounce back from his first poor outing in three starts since rejoining the Yankees' injury-plagued rotation as New York wraps up a four-game series with the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field. Wright, out for nearly four months with a shoulder injury, returned to the rotation on Aug. 15 and went 2-0 in his first two outings, surrendering just two runs and eight hits over 13 1-3 innings. However, the hard-throwing right-hander was not as sharp Saturday against Kansas City, allowing five runs and seven hits over five innings.

Fortunately for Wright, the Yankees scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth to pull out a dramatic 8-7 win, getting him off the hook for what would have been his first loss since a 10-2 defeat to Texas on April 23. "I fell behind a lot of batters and had a long inning,'' Wright said of the Royals' five-run fifth. "You're not going to feel great every time, especially with what I've been through. You do what you can and try to battle through, they just got to me.'' The Mariners couldn't get to Randy Johnson on Wednesday, managing just three hits in seven innings against the former Seattle ace as the Yankees held on for a 2-0 victory. Johnson outdueled 19-year-old rookie Felix Hernandez, who yielded solo homers to fellow rookie Robinson Cano and Gary Sheffield for the game's only runs.

With the victory, the Yankees remained one game in front of the Los Angeles Angels in the AL wild-card race and moved 1 1/2 in front of Cleveland. New York is 2 1/2 games behind first-place Boston in the AL East. Yuniesky Betancourt ended Johnson's no-hit bid with a leadoff double in the sixth, but Seattle managed little else during its seventh loss in 10 games.

That could be a gift from the Heavens for you...

Not the way he's been pitching since he's been back. He was on before he was taken out.

We're not going to win 1-0 anyway, we need to score.

Lopez 2-run dinger off Mendoza, who according to mlb's gameday is still on the Red Sox (hat). 5-1 into the 9th. Williams, Lawton, Posada due up.

A cheap win by Seattle...but a loss for us nonetheless.

Oh well, it was nice to see Ruben back with the team. And the YES Commentators said Wright's X Rays came back negative, so that's good.

After our pitcher, who was shutting them down, got knocked out of the game by a line drive to the chest...

Wright was settling them down with just 3 hits and no runs until he was plunked, once sturtze came over, it unraveled for the Yanks. Oh well its now a 3 1/2 game lead, Sox face the Orioles at home. While Yankees travel to face off against the hot Oakland A's for 4 games, who have by far a better pitchings staff

not as good of an offense though. the yanks have owned the A's this year anyway.

That was the A's in May when they weren't in playoff contention and the Yankees were in the middle of a 16-2 streak.

A's have their problems too. Harden, Kotsay, and Crosby all hurt. Harden has a " light " muscle strain, and his next start will be pushed back. Kotsay has had a bad back all year. Crosby, hurt his ankle ( strain or fracture ) and is on the 15 day DL.
